5.0 out of 5 stars great collection by Nath January 11, 2012

I just started reading Hawthorne recently. He is an excellent author and the Kindle addition of his works is thorough. I appreciate the biography stuff. I grew up in Salem MA in the 60's and could still relate to his experiences in the early 1800's.. For $2.99 no brainer...better than anything written in last 20 or so years. House of Seven Gables blew me away!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the Works, 4 for this version January 27, 2013

Hawthorne is a fantastic writer; the nineteenth century conventions (diction, tendency to include a lot of visual detail, especially of scenes that the reader wasn't likely to be familiar with) will be hard for some readers to get used to, but it's well worth it!

This version has it all, but it doesn't have page numbers or location breakdowns for each work, so you can never tell how far along you are without going back to the main table of contents, then to the t of c for the work you're reading. It's a pain. Next time I would consider getting individual books rather than a collected works. More trouble in the downloading, but, for me, it'll be worth it for the reading experience.

Complete. Handy.

Did you know that Herman Melville went bonkers over Hawthorne? Melville's early works had little of that human torn complexity that made Moby Dick - Moby Dick. It was more like exotic travels by Melville. Then he read Hawthorne and that changed everything. It was so strong that it even sounds weird how far he went with gushing letters etc.

So with THAT as a rave, how can you NOT read what drove Melville to write Moby Dick?

Hawthorne is the pivot on which American literature changed direction. If you don't have Hawthorne in your collection of read books, just keep your mouth shut. Maybe nobody will notice?

I love reading our literary masters and Hawthorne is certainly one of them, so this complete works allows me to read a novel of Hawthorne's and then move directly into another.
