2.0 out of 5 stars Afraid to continue April 13, 2013
Why is it that when a howler occurs at the very beginning of a work, one looks on every subsequent line that's being read as an untrustworthy and unfaithful statement?
Witness this line: " houses and roof perfumes " instead of " houses and rooms are full of perfumes ". If you can continue to read the rest of this familiar poem without thinking that the next line will be seriously wrong you are a more trusting reader than I am. That error has ruined any chance that I would enjoy reading this poem in the kindle format

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, and not perfect.... August 27, 2013

This is a $1.99 edition. That means, of course, it's produced inexpensively.

After reading several reviews which complained of problems with missing words and poor line-breaks, I went over several of Whitman's major poems in my Delphi edition with a reputable printed text. The results are as follows:

"When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom'd"

In Stanza 11, it was missing a break between lines 3 & 4
In Stanza 14, ten lines from the end, it had a wrong word:
"And the sights of the open landscape and the high-spread shy [should have been "sky"] are fitting."

"Out of the cradle endlessly rocking"

About the 33rd paragraph, Delphi's edition had an alternate spelling. Instead of Whitman's older spelling, "O give me the clew", it had "clue".

Just below this, Delphi's edition added a line break, between
"Is that it from your liquid rims and wet sands?"
"Whereto answering, the sea,

"I ebb'd with the ocean of life"

I found no errors in spelling, words added/deleted/changed or line-breaks added/deleted

"Crossing Brooklyn ferry"

I don't have this located in my notes, but at one point, the original was "frolicsome" and Delphi's edition had "frolic-some"

Stanza 6, Line 7: changed word:
Original: "I too knotted the old knot of contrariety,"
Delphi: "I too knitted the old knot of contrariety,"

Stanza 8, Line 4: missing word:
Original, end of line: "by my nighest name as I approach?"
Delphi: "by my nighest name as approach?"

These are relatively lengthy poems.

This collection of Whitman's poetry is well-formatted, has a complete and useful table of contents, and contains both the original and deathbed editions of Leaves of Grass, along with miscellaneous other works. Very nice kindle poetry collection.

I was pleasantly surprised by the completeness of the book: photos, original short edition of Leaves of Grass, as published, plus the full edition. Good introduction as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gracious, Walt! What a sensualist. March 19, 2013
Verified Purchase
This edition presents both versions of his Song of Myself, original and final, which is quite valuable. The surprise for me in reading this, my first collection of Whitman's poetry vs. particular, and apparently expurgated, poems, is what a sensualist old Walt was! He was no stranger to the appeal of the flesh and his words let you experience that.

The illustrations (not particularly sensual) come across very well in the Kindle edition and add to the enjoyment of the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Graphic Hodgepodge August 1, 2013
When the poems in this book got translated to Kindle format, the line breaks appeared to be random. This ruins the way the poem looks and reads. I didn't realize how important the graphic layout of a poem is until I got this. I returned it for a refund two days later.
