5.0 out of 5 stars Better, Much Much Better.... July 30, 2013

For several years, I've checked Kindle's offerings of the works of Henry David Thoreau. Each time I sadly decided it wasn't worth the modest price, that I'd keep my several "collected works" in hardcopy. Finally, about six months ago, I went ahead and bought one -- The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson & Henry David Thoreau (The Complete Works of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson). As the reviewers noted, it wasn't complete, not even close. But it had many of the essays I wanted, both Emerson's and Thoreau's. So it was worth it.

Then.

This Delphi edition is better -- much, much better.

It's not complete either, but it's a lot more complete. It's the only Kindle publication at modest price that includes a large selection of Thoreau's journals, some 2000 pages out of the 6000 pages, I suspect from the 1906 edition. (Delphi's advertisement says that they didn't include the whole journal because of copyright restrictions. This puzzles me; I can't imagine restrictions on the 1906 edition, but who knows. Princeton is putting out the complete journal -- they may be done by now. But it's EXTREMELY pricey, not to mention bookshelf-consuming.)

To continue my modest carp, this Delphi edition isn't complete on out-of-copyright Thoreau essays, either. Curiously, the edition I bought earlier actually has two essays that aren't included here: "Excursions" (1863) and "An Excusion to Canada" (1853, which might be included in Delphi's Thoreau book, here, "A Yankee in Canada". But I can't find it easily if it is.) Nor does the Delphi version have all the published essays on Wikipedia's select bibliography list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great classic April 17, 2015

Your questions posed for my review are ridiculous with respect to this type of book. It has no PLOT!!! It is a classic, but it is not a novel. It expremely well-written, and stands as one of the great pieces of literature of our country. How dare you seek to find a "plot" a "mood" or a "pace" in it!!

I am a huge fan of Thoreau. He may not appeal to everyone, but you cannot beat his prose. Ghandi was also a fan of Thoreau.
