5.0 out of 5 stars Another great anthology from the publisher! October 12, 2011
By Fred L
As in the past, Delphi Classics presents a very complete edition with wonderful illustrations and formatting, as well as insightful bonus texts. Moreover, their customer service is fast and efficient, providing free updates with new texts and bonuses for most of their editions. Probably the best publisher for classic literature on kindle : highly recommanded!

4.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Help It - I Love Kipling (asterisk) February 23, 2012
Verified Purchase
The asterisk means he has his flaws, and chief among them is his rotten cheerfulness and creepy optimism. I'm joking, of course, with those negative adjectives -- but too much Kipling leaves one longing for, say, Joseph Conrad, RK's contemporary and not exactly Mr. Happy Face.
Kipling is escapism, but then what's wrong with that?
"The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes" is that exception, a story of mostly unrelenting horror; still, the faithful Indian "dog boy" arrives to rescue the protagonist before too much psychic damage. The servant-master relationship, characteristic of so much in Kipling's work, annoys millions of people; and then there's the whole "White Man's Burden" thing. If you abjure the sin of presentism -- and it is hard, I know -- you can see there is something much deeper and more valuable going on between all these Indians and British. The relationship is one of mutual dependency, and master without servant quickly goes insane or dies. Similarly, I see nothing but respect and awe toward Indian religion and beliefs in Kipling's work -- his characters, in particular the undereducated or morally challenged ones, may express "racist" statements, but the author feels quite otherwise. Just because you and I know that a tiger is a tiger, and not a ghost, does not mean we cannot see or hear the spirit of John Chinn animating the beast and challenging his grandson. In "Kim", his greatest work, Kipling tackles the East-West divide head-on: Kimball O'Hara, white in skin and heritage but thoroughly Indian in outlook, resists an effort to cloud his mind with drugs and magic by .. reciting the multiplication table. It works!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some illustrations are corrupted March 29, 2012
Verified Purchase
I am enjoying this very much. However I just completed reading "Puck of Pook's Hill", and about half of the illustrations consist of wavy lines. The text of the novel is fine. The text has also been fine in the short stories and poems I have read skipping around in the ebook.

3.0 out of 5 stars complete yet riddled with flaws October 13, 2012
Verified Purchase
It's a crazy amount of text, nearly everything Kipling ever wrote. The bad news is that it is riddled with minor typos, about one incorrect word every two pages. These are usually of the type of one bad letter which makes the phrase nonsense even though it is grammatical. For example "or" instead of "of, "is" instead of "if", that type of thing which rankles each time you see one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for sharing February 18, 2014
Verified Purchase
I like to keep some of my favorite classics on my Kindle to share with my son. I am also able to refer students to a specific author based on what I perceive their interests to be. I find that taking a quote from some of the classic writings can inspire students to read, thus further expanding their English language knowledge. I use selected books from the Delphi series as a reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kipling
Exotic, rhythmic, sometimes gritty, creative, fantasy tales. Dislike him for his imperialism if you will but quote his work, you must.
