I fly about a dozen short business trips per year for work, and this is my third carry-on bag. Cheaper nylon bags do ok when I carry them on, but on smaller planes (I get stuck on Embraer 145s a lot) I have to gate check them. And sometimes, I have a back-pack and I prefer to just check this bag. The cheap nylon bags I've used just don't handle the rough and tumble treatment they receive from the baggage handlers. I briefly considered a nice ballistic nylon bag, but at well over $300, I can easily just keep buying cheaper $70 bags for years. I wasn't convinced that the expense would be a good investment.

But now the hardshell bags are available, and I was willing to try one out. The Delsey bag fits into the overhead on most planes. I have to gate check it on the 50 seater flights, but that's no different from my previous bags, so no change there. It doesn't expand, as most nylon bags do, but I find it adequate sized for up to 5-7 day trips, and it's only 1/2 full for 2-3 day trips. Perfect. The handles were the first thing to go on my prior bags. I believe it's because they get tagged with "priority" unloading, and the handlers are probably pulling it out of the bottom of a pile of luggage. The telescoping handles also get bent while retracted, as they bear the weight of everything piled on top. The hard shell of this bag solves both of these issues. Even though the shell does bend (I don't recommend standing on it), it does provide some protection. But the big advantage is that the material is much lower friction than nylon bags. It just slides out from under a pile of luggage with much less force, and it just doesn't take the damage that my nylon bags did.

It's been on 11 trips now, so it's still fairly new, but it has taken zero damage so I expect years of use.

UPDATE 7/1/2013: It's been another year, and this bag still looks nearly as new as when I bought it. It just holds up. I have upgraded from 4 stars, to 5.

I've only taken this suitcase on one trip so far so I can't speak to its durability. It is extremely lightweight but also spacious enough to easily fit three or four days' worth of stuff. The wheels work beautifully and the suitcase rolls extremely easily. So easily, in fact, that I nearly lost it when a atrong gust of wind pushed it off the sidewalk and into the street! It's attractive inside and out.

I have only two complaints. First, although the color was stated as "blue" it's really much more of a purple. It's a nice purple, but you'd be disappointed if you were expecting a true blue. And second, there are no handles other than the one on top, which makes hauling it into luggage compartments and car trunks a little more challenging.

Worked great on a transatlantic trip, the wheels even stood up to some particularly horrendous cobblestone. My only complaint is that there's no handle on the long side.

After much research and reviews-combing, I asked for this as a birthday present last year. I liked how it looked, and others found it to be sturdy.

PROBLEM: After 5 trips between the US and London for work over just 6 months, the back wheels (closer to the handle) wore away into little cone shapes so much so that they no longer spun. I dragged my fully-loaded suitcase home from the airport after the last journey.

I had sent away the warranty card after receiving this, so I expected to be able to return it when I contacted Delsey. They informed me that because it was purchased through Amazon, they would not honor the warranty. It took them over a month to return the first email, and they never returned my phone call. When I pushed back, they wrote a month later to say that I could take the suitcase (at my expense) to an approved dealer over 100 miles away for a wheel replacement.

Very disappointing response, product, and customer service.

Less important feedback: the roller function wasn't smooth with the telescoping handle fully extended (necessary to do when wearing high heels, but it worked reasonably well when lowered.

The product itself is great. Light and easy to maneuver. However, we already had luggage and bought this primarily to be a carry-on bag. But on a recent United Flight which involved using a smaller plane, they wouldn't let us carry it on. So be aware that while you shouldn't have any issues riding on 727 aircraft or larger, you may not be able to get this on a smaller plane.

I was looking for a lightweight hardside carry-on. Samsonite was ridiculously overpriced and I'm sure worth every penny but for my budget and needs, this was perfect. It rolls very smoothly and is very very light -- I am able to pack for my weekly business trips without any problem. On a recent trip to Paris my luggage had a huge dent in it and I panicked. My husband just kicked the side and the dent popped out with no visible damage. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that it doesn't have a zippered expandable option as that would take it from a carry-on to something bigger in case you buy some goodies on your trip.

I paid about 50% more for this than a similar lower end bag. I'm normally not the type to buy premium bags but this was well worth it. It's super light, the mechanics of the wheels and handles are superior, and the zipper does not get stuck like on cheaper competitors' bags. The color is very nice, it will stand out from the typical silver and black bags out there.

Nice piece of luggage. Bought it as a laptop briefcase for long business/getaway trips because my laptop is the 18inch kind necessary for graphics reproduction.

This case is lightweight, and well-made. It is stylish and has plenty of room for my laptop, manuscripts and a couple of days clothing when traveling to the tropics.

Delivery was exceptionally fast and packaged very well.

This Delsey luggage is very light in weight and is attractive. It moves very well on its twirling wheels .
The down side is that to achieve this weight there is only one pocket on the inside to organize the contents so everything lays in one huge lump. Great locking system!

The bag is lightweight and the spinner wheels are spaced widely so the bag doesn't tip during travel. It's nice and roomy. One side has straps to keep clothing in place. The other side secures clothing with a snap fastened covering that has a zippered mesh pocket. It does not have built-in shoe "sleeves," which were pretty handy. What I really miss is the second handle on the long side of the bag, helpful when lifting it in or out of a vehicle.
