What You Should Know About Cough

Coughing helps clear mucus and other matter (inhaled irritants) from the throat and lungs. Remember to help decrease the spread of germs by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough and always putting your used tissue in the waste basket when finished. I hate cold syrups of any kind because they taste so disgusting. As far as artificial flavors go, orange is one of my favorites, so I decided to brake down and try Delsym because they seemed to have the lowest price per dose for something that was strictly a cough suppressant. Every time I take a cold medicine with both cough suppressant and expectorant in it, while only having cough issues (such as for the cough that lingers after a cold) I end up feeling incredibly dry in my chest, even if I compromise and take only half a dose. Anyway, I thought about getting the Robitussin CoughGels, Liqui-gels 20 ea, but they seemed expensive for 10 doses - now I wish I'd decided differently. For starters, the Delsym could definitely taste worse, but it still left me with that utterly disgusted look on my face and the need to chase this with food and water to get rid of the aftertaste. I've taken this a few different times now, and have decided that it doesn't work. It may have decreased my urge to cough slightly for an hour or two after it got in my system, but it is not enough to help me sleep through the night, or really get to sleep for that matter. I'm writing this review at 4:30 AM because I just had a coughing spell. (I probably took the Delsym around midnight.) I now have a sore throat and a hurting side from coughing so much, and nothing to show for the $11 I wasted on this stuff. From much of what I've found on the internet, the Dextromethorphan Polistirex in Delsym doesn't work for a lot of people; it's such a shame that it's so hard to find Dextromethorphan HBr (which does seem to work for me) as a single active ingredient in anything because there are so many people out there who abuse it.

I have a sore throat / cough due to a viral infection of my throat. Each cough inflames my throat, which make me cough more. I used Delsym along with Ricola cough drops. Delsym worked great for the first 5-10 minutes, but afterward, the cough keeps coming back (the Ricola helps, but does not eliminate coughing). Phlegm production seems to have subdued, but not entirely. Also, nasal congestion is unaffected (probably not an intended treatable symptom for Delsym, but just giving more info). Hope this helps.

I have two children in school so we get quite a few colds and coughs in our house each year. My daughter has asthma, so when she gets a cough it tends to be severe. My daughter also hates any cold or cough medicine that contains any kind of menthol (which is most of them) so when our pediatrician gave us a sample of Delsym we were both impressed. I love that it is time released so it is 12 hour dosing. It doesn't work perfectly--no cough suppressant can completely eliminate a cough--but it does a great job of reducing the amount of coughing. And because it lasts a long time it helps my daughter sleep through the night when she is battling a cough. I use it myself and have recommended it to friends and family--I have faith in this product and it is worth the higher cost per bottle. (the cost per dose isn't much higher than other brands because other brands need to be taken every 4-6 hours)
