This saw only bevels to the left, however, and setting the miter gauge requires more effort than we'd like. The scale is set from behind the fence, which means you have to lean over the saw a bit to set your angle. It isn't a hassle, exactly, but it might be more effort than finish carpenters--who have to dial in exact angles all day long--would like. However, anyone would appreciate the stock stops, which extend up to 59 inches down the stand. As is standard, Delta's Sidekick has positive stops set at 0, 22-1/2, 31.62, and 45 degrees. Spinning a 10-inch blade at 5,000 rpm, the Sidekick cuts widths to 11-1/2 inches at 90 degrees and 8 inches at 45 degrees. It's a good, solid saw, all in all, especially for contractors who want big cutting capacity and who are tired of lugging heavy compound miter saws around. --Justin Paul

Best saw under $500,

This review is from: Delta 36-240 Sidekick 10-Inch Compound Miter saw without Stand (Tools & Home Improvement)
While I am far from a woodworking professional, I am becoming a more adept amateur as time goes on. My girlfriend and I bought this saw while making a potting cart for her mother and it has been a fantastic choice. In our eyes, this saw outclassed the others that were around $500.00 and was cheapest of the lot. The others we looked at were the Hitachi C10FS, one craftsman, and one Makita (Unfortunately I don't remember the model numbers). While the motors on each were powerful enough for most jobs, it was the little things about this saw that have made it appealing. The horizontal handle is nice from an ergonomic standpoint, and the base is made so that you can construct a table using standard 2x4's with little effort. The sliding mechanism is top notch. Making sure the rotation is correct on the base take a little getting used to, and when we originally got it I thought it might get loose (it's a pressure type lock as opposed to a screw lock), however it hasn't gotten loose and the instruction manual clearly explains how to tune the locking mechanism. Overall a great saw.

Delta 10" CPD.-Miter saw,
By "kenyloo" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Delta 36-240 Sidekick 10-Inch Compound Miter saw without Stand (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have been a self-employed contractor for over 7 years, currently operating in Los Angeles. I bought the saw when my 10" Dewalt retired from service. Comparably priced and well equipped in both power and accuracy. The accuracy is not as good with the blade that it comes with though, so for finish work I recommend a professional quality finish blade, spend more and get more. I did find the 'saftey' guard a little clumsy, I removed mine although I do not recommend this for beginners. If you keep it on you simply have to move the saw downward more slowly. The sliding mechanism works very well, as does the miter lockin mechanism, it just requires a bit more attention when setting it for finish cuts. It is both rugged, an employee dropped mine with no ill effects, and stable. The large plastic base has proven a major plus when setting the saw up on-site. The base offers great stability by itself, and is equally useful when mounted on 2X4 saw horses. One minor drawback is its small rear fence. On mine we mounted a length of 1/2" ply to heighten it. One other thing may be seen as a small minus and that is the miter and bevel scales. You just have to be careful when setting them. I very much enjoy using this saw. I have used it successfully for both rough framing and crown molding installation. Personally, I also like the 'quiet' color scheme it has, it dosen't remind me of those school-bus days long ago.

Great Saw for Finishing and Roughing,
By Bai Po "argumentative" (New Rochelle, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Delta 36-240 Sidekick 10-Inch Compound Miter saw without Stand (Tools & Home Improvement)
As a homeowner of a 100 year old colonial, I have used this saw outside and inside and it has been flawless. I cut 2800 linear feet of Philippine mahogany for the porch and at least 800' of 4 1/2" crown molding in the bedrooms. It came out of the box cutting square and accurate. If it needed any adjustment, the wrenches are attached on the left hand leg. The angle stop took a little getting used to (I would have been happier with a more positive stop), but now I am comfortable with it. I bought a 60 tooth blade for the finish work, and this saw makes me look like I know what I'm doing (the crown molding cheat sheet is nice working around the bay windows). I like the horizontal handle, and the scale is easy enough to read. It is not too heavy to carry outside or upstairs and is still very stable. I have been very satisfied with the Delta.
