Could be better,
By A Customer
This review is from: Delta 50-259 Dust Hood Attachment (For Model 22-540) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this product to help control the dust and shavings generated by my 12" planer. The dust collector did help but it fills up quickly and then the dust overflows the top and bottom and becomes ineffective. While browsing the products on this page I saw a dust collector with the outlet in the center of the collector instead of the side. I am hoping it will fit the 12 inch planer because I believe a center outlet will be much more effective than the side outlet.

A little flimsy for Delta,

This review is from: Delta 50-259 Dust Hood Attachment (For Model 22-540) (Tools & Home Improvement)
The metal dust hood is a little flimsy for what I usually expect from Delta. The instructions were photocopies of bad photocopies and were nearly useless. The hood goes over the existing chip chute, it does not replace it. This was not clear in the instructions. If you remove the existing chip chute to add the dust collector, it leaves the blades exposed. However, it is easy enough to see how it fits on the planer. The holes, etc fitted well. It works well and collects most of the dust and chips. I hessitated before buying based on other reviews. I think it works well for people using a dust collector with plenty of air flow. It probably does not work well if you are trying to use a shop vac. Overall, it's OK for me. I would not have minded spending a few more dollars if the quality was better.

barely worth the cost,

My small shop was a mess after even minimal planing with my Delta 12" planer. I thought the Delta dust hood attachement would help. It does but just barely.First off the damn thing didn't fit. It had been twisted while being welded up, so it took me a day to make it fit passably. The hood fills up with shavings at the end farthest from the vacuum attachement after just a few planings; this easily cleaned out by inserting a shop-vac attachement, but this takes time. It's better than nothing, but just barely.

Bad Instructions, Good Product,

The editorial review @ Amazon states that this is a REPLACEMENT of the chip chute... THIS IS INCORRECT! The poor quality copy that serves as the instructions never states that you remove the existing chute--thanks to one of the Amazon reviewers for getting this right! It fits over the existing chute. In this configuration, the dust hood works well and is structurally stiff. Mine fit on the planer with no problems or modifications. As far as performance is concerned, I even forgot to turn my dust collections system (1100CFM) on for one pass and the only chips that came out were towards the front of the machine; with the dust collection turned on the dust chute was every bit as effective as I thought it would be: almost no chips or dust in the work area.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Delta 50-259 Dust Hood Attachment (For Model 22-540) (Tools & Home Improvement)
Aloha! Having read the previous reviews, I stalled in my purchase of this accessory, reports of clogging etc. However, the large pile of chips left after each of my planning sessions blowing in the island tradewinds convinced me to give it a try. I can only say it works great for me, and I wish I had purchased it sooner. I have it connected to a single stage 1200CFM Delta dust collector and have just run over 40 board feet of maple through it non-stop with no problems what so ever, and best of all no mess! The attachement was extremely simple to install, and the only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars was I have't run many different types of lumber through it yet. Mahalo! Mark

Sheet metal had to be rebent into the proper position to get it to fit. About a 45 minute job.

after receiving this dust hood, and trying to install it obviously there must have not been very much thought put into the design. when following the instructions you still have to twist and bend the hood to make it fit properly. even still i had to add a bracket to the left side, drill a hole and use a tap to make threads in the machine to properly secure the dust hood. if this product wasn't a gift i would have returned it and made my own out of aluminum stock utilizing the existing dust shute. i would only suggest buying this if you feel like playing around with it to get it to fit. any questions email me

Dust build up problem,
This review is from: Delta 50-259 Dust Hood Attachment (For Model 22-540) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had the exact same problems as mentioned by an earlier reviewer. One of two smallish width planks it handles well. Anything more than that and it clogs very quickly and while it is easy to unclog, well sorta easy, it is a pain in the neck.Installation is very easy, take 5 mins, and the cost is low, but it's really not worth it.

Mediocre product,

I agree with some of the other reviewers--the thing just doesn't fit very well. Not all the holes line up so you really have to twist it in order to get the screws in. Once assembled, it works OK. I have a 2 hp collector, so nothing ever clogs, but it still only gets about 80% of the chips, so that leaves 20% all over the place that you still have to clean up. That said, you really don't have any other choice (except make your own), and over the life of the tool, it will save you a lot of sweeping. It's just that it would have been so easy to make it better...

It Works...,

Looks like an adaptation of a standard HVAC fitting, not particularly sturdy. If you don't have a dust collection system, the rubber reducing collars for a septic system (Hardware Store) can reduce the 4" Collar to a 2 1/2" Shop Vac hose, it makes a nice snug connection. The weight of any hose makes one end of the hood droop and sometimes catches the stock as it passes...need to watch that, but it does a good job of removing shavings and eliminating mess, even with with only a shop vac for collection.
