Works exactly as advertised, August 26, 2009
This review is from: Delta Alloy Bicycle Stem Raiser (Sports)
I ordered the Delta alloy stem raiser because my steerer tube wasn't long enough to get my handlebars into the proper position. I'm somewhat tall but, proportionally speaking, my arms aren't very long, so getting a good fit has always been a challenge. Frames that work for my height and leg length invariably place the handlebars too low and too far forward. My saddle is raised quite a bit, but even with the handlebars at their max height, riding on the brake hoods or top section of the bar felt more like riding in the drops. And forget about *actually* riding in the drops - they were almost too low to reach if I wanted to keep my head looking forward. Plus, just riding on the brake hoods had me bent over far enough to impede my breathing, which brought on fatigue earlier than normal.
Now that I've installed the Delta stem raiser (along with a stem that has less forward extension), all is right with the world. I can go on long rides without fatigue, and I can ride in the drops when I want to. A great product that works exactly as advertised.
I have only two nitpicks: First, the allen bolt that connects this product to the star nut in your steerer tube is deep inside the unit. You need a fairly long allen wrench to reach down inside the stem raiser and tighten this bolt. Other reviewers have commented on this. I have a pocket-knife-style set of allen wrenches, and mine just *barely* reached far enough to properly tighten the bolt. If the wrench had been one half of a millimeter shorter, I wouldn't have been able to finish installing the stem raiser. Secondly, the black finish is glossy, which some people might prefer, but it doesn't match the flat or matte finish on most black stems. But this is an extremely minor nitpick.
Lastly, this is not a nitpick, but something to keep in mind: At the maximum handlebar height that this stem raiser allows, there's a chance that you won't have enough slack in your brake and shifter cables. However, this is not a flaw in the product's design. Rather, it's a natural consequence of raising your handlebars substantially above their original position. I didn't encounter this problem, but other users might.

Wonderful product!, March 16, 2008
This review is from: Delta Alloy Bicycle Stem Raiser (Sports)
I bought the 1 1/8" black Delta Stem Raiser for my commuter bike as soon as I discovered it's existence- I've been commuting to work on my bike for years, and I always wished that my handlebars were a little bit higher but only recently decided to do something about it.
Installation was simple, and I only had one problem- I didn't have an allen wrench in my toolkit long enough to reach down inside of the raiser tube to tighten the center bolt and had to run out and buy one (I was surprised that it wasn't bundled with one).
My bike is way more comfortable now- it's amazing what a difference a few inches will make! Highly recommended.
