Editorial Reviews

This is a wonderful record... The first 14 cuts are from 1942 Library of Congress recordings... Edwards' playing is as Delta blues as it gets... Edwards worked with (Big Joe Williams and) other Delta greats such as Tommy McClennan, Charley Patton... Big Walter Horton, Robert Johnson, and Little Walter. His playing shows influences from all these men... There are seven songs on the CD recorded in 1991 with Carey Bell, Sunnyland Slim, Aron Burton, and Robert Plunkett, that show Edwards can still lay down some mean blues... If you have any interest in Mississippi blues, you've got to have this album. -Living Blues

This wonderful album deserves a real review. Delta Bluesman is probably the best single CD by David "Honeyboy" Edwards. The first half of the CD captures Edwards when he was young and strong - the 1942 Library of Congress session recorded by Alan Lomax. The best tracks from this session, like "Roamin' and Ramblin' Blues" and "Wind Howlin' Blues," are as good as almost any Delta blues ever recorded.

The second half of the CD consists of recordings made from 1979 to 1991, both solo and with a couple of different groups. They capture Honeyboy's idiosyncratic approach very well - he wasn't much concerned with counting the "correct" number of measures until the next chord change; he went strictly by feel. And the "feel" of Honeyboy's music is great, even though he isn't the most technically adept bluesman. I particularly like "Big Katie Allen" (about a Mississippi River steamboat) and "Number 12 at the Station" from these later sessions.

There are also half a dozen tracks of Edwards talking about the tracks and about his life. They're not intrusive at all - Honeyboy is a great storyteller, although if you're not used to Mississippi accents he might be a little hard to understand.

If you're only going to get one Honeyboy Edwards albums, this is the one.
