Editorial Reviews

Delta Bound celebrates Mississippi Heat's 20th year of creating wonderful blues music and their 10th recording! Fourteen original songs, twelve by leader and harmonica player Pierre Lacocque, and two written and/or arranged by lead vocalist Inetta Visor. While the record is a solid electric blues album, you will also find acoustic blues, a catchy New Orleans tune as well as a stunning version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood written by Nina Simone and made famous by The Animals in 1965. Special guests include Heat alumnus and original member, singer Deitra Farr, who delivers on three awesome songs; zydeco giant Chubby Carrier; and guitarists Billy Flynn and Carl Weathersby.

What I don't understand is why this band isn't more widely recognized by the public for the fine work they do. This release celebrates their 20th year of performing some of the most creative and straight ahead Blues out there.

Right off the bat we get a big ol' helping of Ms. Inetta Visor throwing down some soulful and heartfelt vocals on `Granny Mae'. That alone is enuf for me, this lady's voice is so rooted in soul it speaks volumes on it's own, but for this track we added Giles Corey on guitar who along with regular billy Satterfield combine to push this song to it's limits.

Since this is a anniversary release we have some great visitors to the studio. Former Heat member Ms. Deitra Farr is featured on three tracks and rocks out on `Look-A-Here, Baby' accompanied by founder Pierre Lacocque blowing well versed harp and once again Mr. Sattefield working those six strings to glory. Ms. Farr throws down country blues with Pierre and early Heat member guitar virtuoso Billy Flynn on `What's Happening To Me' - time for some two-stepping and passing the flask around.

Straight ahead Chicago Blues pairs Ms. Visor with the legendary Carl Weathersby on `Mr. Mistreater'. This should serve as a lesson for all musicians and scholars as to what makes a shuffle a shuffle as Mr. Kenny Smith lays it down a tome while everyone else slides into place. Sweet!

Showing their depth of range and styles we get a special treat as Chubby Carrier (Ain't No Party like a Chubby Party) hooks up with the band for `New Orleans Man'. Andrew `Blaze' Thomas sits on the drums and Keith Blair on the guitar as the create a second line back beat all the while Chubby and Pierre work their syncopated magic together and separately to create on mean jambalaya for us all.

This tenth album recorded by Mississippi Heat is one of the best I listened to, so far, in 2012 The compositions skills of Piere Lacoque are amazing , the band is in phase and as always, the guests are well chosen and outstanding : zydeco icon Chubby Carrier ("New Orleans man") , guitar wizzards Carl Weathersby (2 tracks) and Billy Flynn (4 tracks), a welcome return to the roots for Billy ....and for singer Deitra Farr whose tone of voice is so attractive (3 tracks). A very good 'un , not to be missed

Through myriad personnel changes, which have included stints by some of Chicago's most esteemed musicians and vocalists (Katherine Davis, who appears on 1999's Handyman, took over after Deitra struck out on her own in the mid-'90s; the incendiary Inetta Visor stepped in in 2001 and has held the mic ever since), Pierre's beloved dream band has become both a Chicago mainstay and an international ambassador of the living blues tradition.

This CD, Delta Bound, is both a showcase for fresh material and an affectionate look back - Deitra has returned to sing a few songs; guitarist Billy Flynn, another early member, is also on hand to contribute his deft meld of rootsy integrity and forward-looking flash. And as usual, the special guests - including Zydeco great Chubby carrier, keyboardist Chris "Hambone" Cameron, and fretboard mainstay Carl Weathersby - ignite almost as many sparks as the core unit itself.

Through it all, the group's shared passion for blues expression, in all its soul-baring honesty, is palpable. "Sweet Ol' Blues, I'm so glad you're my friend," sings Deitra, in what could stand as both Pierre's and the entire band's theme song. "You are my trusted companion, now - yes, my pal, forever on end."
