Amazon.com Review

Novalogic's Delta Force 2, the sequel to 1998's Delta Force, places players in the role of an American Special Forces soldier. Spanning more than forty missions of squad-based combat, Delta Force 2 requires players to either work solo or guide a handful of squad members into heavily fortified enemy ground. Most missions involve search-and-destroy objectives and take place on a wide variety of landscapes and locations.

Novalogic's decision to reuse their "Voxel Space" engine from the original Delta Force probably won't please gamers hoping for something akin to the Unreal engine. While the Voxel Space engine renders landscapes and patches of grass beautifully, trying to locate items and enemy soldiers from a distance becomes quite difficult; it's simply hard to distinguish long-range enemy voxels (the pixels that comprise Novalogic's 3-D engine) from standard environmental objects. Furthermore, heed Novalogic's warnings and don't attempt to run Delta Force 2 unless you meet or, better yet, exceed the system requirements.

Despite some performance problems, Delta Force 2 includes both a robust and enjoyable single-player experience as well as plenty of Internet and LAN multiplayer options. More than twenty real-world weapons and equipment are included; missions require the use of everything from the M40A1 sniper rifle and APS underwater assault rifle to light anti-tank weapons and camouflage suits. --Doug Radcliffe

5.0 out of 5 stars Novalogic has fixed some of the problems in DF2, December 6, 1999
By
new york reader (New York City, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Delta Force 2 (CD-ROM)
When I initially tested DF2, I only rated this game with 3 stars because the full version of this game is full of glitches. However, Novalogic has finally released the patches to fix Delta Force 2 problems. This game is now more stable than it was initially released. The graphics are somehow faster now on my 16-bit video card. Now, I am back playing my DF2!

The AI enemies in DF2 are actually smarter than the ones in DF1. They can duck and hide behind bushes and tall grass. In some missions, enemy forces in fact send reinforcements. Very cool! They look for high grounds and hide in strategic places. Plus, they shoot very accurately. So if you are not careful enough, you can die easily.

This time, Novalogic incorporates story lines into its newly released DF2. This adds new spices to the game. Weather effects also add new flavors to DF2 because they make the game more realistic than DF1.

The only drawback is the night vision goggles. They are not very good. In some places, it is not helpful at all. Sometimes, it is so dark in certain spots that you cannot see anything. I like the night vision goggles in DF1. The new weapons are terrible too. In fact, I never use them. All I need is the M-4, sniper guns, handgun with silencer, and the anti-tank rocket launcher. Loading is a bit slower than DF1 and smokes disappear very quickly, but these are no big deals though.

I recommend this game to all first-person shooter fans. BUT you must download the patches right away. Now it becomes a 5 stars game!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a gung-ho first person shooter trying to be realistic, December 27, 1999
This review is from: Delta Force 2 (CD-ROM)
One thing that you have to keep in mind when you play Delta Force 2, is that the game is not super realistic like Swat 3 or Rougue Spear. And that is where this game takes its dive.

Delta Force 2 is supposed to offer a realistic quality, wind and distance effecting your accuracy. But, I still haven't seen that done in my game. This game shouldn't be bought as a realistic team fighter, but a gung-ho Rambo type game. Sure you have teammates, but they are useless, and usually die. Also, hostiles who wouldn't spot you in a million years, some how do. But, when you are completely visable, and out in the open, many times hostiles won't even react to you. Also, the graphics are not improved, but rather the same as the first Delta Force. Multiplayer is crude, and often times uneventfull, with simple maps. Really, this game is just an add-on to the original, so if you have the first Delta Force, don't buy this one. If you don't have the first one, and you are in to charging into camps, sniping everything in sight, and a really easily beatable Campaign mode, come on in!

4.0 out of 5 stars I like this game......, June 16, 2002

This review is from: Delta Force 2 (CD-ROM)
I have gone backwards in my delta force experience having bought DF#-landwarrior first and then buying up the first two just to have more missions to play. It is certainly been worth it! All the delta force games take place out doors which makes them different. It's realistic action were you have to snipe your way around the perimeter to make your way into a camp to complete your mission objective. Of the three delta force games i own i think df2 has the most original and interesting missions.

You like missions? Well in this game you get over 40 of them! I wish rainbow six would give you that many. These missions are part of two campaigns that form a certain story line or you can play them as "quick missions" in any order on your own. Many of those missions are also available in multiplayer so you can play coop with a buddy. The missions take place in a variety of weather conditions day and night and the challenge is being able to take out all the terrorists because that one guy you missed will take you out and remember one shot kills! Sure you can respawn but that just means starting the mission all over again from the beginning. That is the challenge in delta force the sheer number of combatants you need to take out and the large area in which they use. For example in one of my favorite missions there is a downed pilot hiding in this snowy wilderness. To fly him out safely you need to take out a camp containing at least 25 of the enemy and destroy three SAMs. Getting most of the terrorist scum is easy as you just take a position up top and start picking them off but it's hard to get them all and some are out where you can't see them easily. So patience is key because as soon as you leave your cover somebody will get you. It took me a while to complete that mission and twice i was 99% finished just having blown up the SAMs only to get sniped.

You don't have a huge number of weapons to choose from but what you have is fantastic and you'll find yourself using one of the sniper rifles or the M4 machine gun which has a grenade launcher. You won't use your hand gun much and you have the choice of delayed or frag grenades. Satchels are available for blowing up large things like those SAM sites and you can use extra ammo or a vest as one of your options. Because methodical, longer range warfare is the order you have a really nice alternative to games like rainbow and half life were most of your action is confined to a small space. It's the pace of the game that i really like and it's a blast to pick off some terrorist from 300 meters away.

The multiplayer is a whole new ball game because you're going to have quite a few people trying to get you. The last time i played at nova world there were 900 people in there so you never have to wait for some action. You can play deathmatch where every man is for himself or team death match. Capture the flag is a blast. You really can never tire of this game!

Drawbacks? Well the graphics are not an improvement over delta force one though they are pretty cool. You do need to update the game all the way because there are a few problems that needed to be fixed and you'll want to maximize your resolution. The game can be just a bit choopy and sluggish at times which brings me to why i only have a 4* rating.

In all the delta force games you are placed in an outdoor enviroment that is enormous. Often you will have to run for a minute or two just to engage the enemy or reach their camp. In all these games you feel like you are spending too much time running around and that is especially a problem in multiplyer were you run for ever only to get killed and have to go back to where you were . DF3-landwarrior remedies this problem a little by making the characters run faster but in this game you seem to plod along at a slow pace. That's especially true when running up and down steep mountains.

Over all delta force2 is a fantastic realistic shooter with unique characteristics. It's a great compliment to some of the other great games out there. I own rainbow 6 and rouge spear and this makes a nice alternative. Certainly the price is right.
