5.0 out of 5 stars Needs to have a sixth star, May 14, 2000

This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
I have nearly a dozen Aretha albums and this is my favorite. The opening cut is enough to buy the album on its own. To add the other 15 tracks is a bonus. I have most of the albums from which the tracks were taken but this is a must have for an Aretha fan. This is the most passionate blues album I have heard. As humans we must feel for Aretha and her many heartaches. As fans, we must thank her struggles because they have produced one of the greatest female singers in history.

5.0 out of 5 stars night time is the right time...and the day...and noon...etc., September 29, 2001
This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
...see,...yall can call this the blues if you want to, but in truth this is soul music delivered unto us by the best female vocalist to have ever...uh...vocalled.
fa'real, now, you can feel her spirit just aswingin back and forth between her filthy pains and dirty lusts...it hits you dead smack in the middle of your chest, sinks in, settles, rattles, vibrates and hums. the love and hurt felt here picks me up by my ankles and swings all 275 pounds of me around and around until i give in and feel it! this is some good stuff...just get it! if you love aretha and like the blues or soul music...then this wont dissappoint, promise.

4.0 out of 5 stars songs for a blue lady., March 4, 1999
This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
though aretha franklin is not often heralded as a blues artist, this collection certainly makes the case for such an inclusion. better than many other collections of aretha's work, _the delta meets detroit: aretha's blues_ gathers songs around a central theme, providing an encapsulated investigation of one of the many sides of the queen of soul. really, what is soul if not the union of blues and gospel? and for an artist whose career has spanned as many genres as years, it's nice to see a collection that doesn't try to be all things to all people. from the cover art to the material, this is one classy album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long Live the Queen!, January 7, 1999
This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
Being an avid fan of Aretha for over 20 years, I have heard most of these songs before. I was really jazzed to find this particular collection of her blues songs all on one CD. I had to have it! I sing to it in the shower, listen while driving, and never tire of her powerful voice and well constructed vocal & musical backgrounds. I recommend this one to anyone who loves the blues, jazz, or just Aretha. It spans at least a decade of her career and is geared more towards musicians who appreciate a great voice with feeling. Get it!

I bought this CD on a whim at a used CD store knowing absolutely nothing about it and what a great purchase it turned out to be. Anyone who likes a smooth blues sound coupled with a powerful voice will love this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feeling Bad Never Sounded So Good, September 16, 2005

This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
Although known primarily as a Soul singer, Aretha Franklin usually found space on each of her early Atlantic albums for at least a few serious, hardcore Blues numbers. Deep down sad, gut-wrenching Blues. The best of these is collected here. There is only one song here that wasn't on her readily available releases, but that one track ( "Taking Another Man's Place" ) makes this an essential purchase for fans of Aretha and for fans of the Blues. Incredible vocal performances ( this is, after all, the Queen in her prime ), terrific musical performances (with guests like guitarists Eric Clapton and Duane Allman ) and inspired song choices make this one of the best Aretha Franklin compilations available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, September 10, 2005

This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
This is one of the best blues albums I have ever heard. It's beautiful and it's important. Aretha gets to the heart and soul of the music. She has a glorious voice which is enhanced by her deep, profound emotional expression of the material. She is the only artist I have ever heard successfully match Ray Charles on "Drown in My Own Tears"

I have been keeping this CD in my car and listening to it over and over. It often makes my day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another treasure from a musical genius, October 30, 2007
This review is from: The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues (Audio CD)
What more can be said about this legend in music that hasn't already been said. Aretha can sing anything and make it exciting and thrilling. Anyone who hasn't heard her music from her prime years will understand why she is called Queen of Soul, and in this case, the blues. I would extend that to jazz and pop, as well. Had she just been blessed with that miraculous voice, it would have been enough. But music is in her heart and soul and she sings like a musical instrument. Her phrasing and incredible gifts at the piano set her apart from the rest. The sands of time are measured by AD, BC and now, AF (after Aretha, there is no one). You will never listen to any other female singers today after you hear Aretha. This album will explain everything, especially The Night Time is the Right Time. Hang on to your seat, turn up the volume and be prepared to get as close to heaven as one can get.
