5.0 out of 5 stars Indie That Deserves Consideration!, April 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Delta Moon (Audio CD)
Delta Moon is centered around, Gina Leigh on vocals and percussion, Tom Gray on vocals, lap-style guitar and keyboards and Mark Johnson on the bottleneck guitar. The trio is assisted as needed by Tommy Dean on bass, Charles Wolff and Gerry Hanson on drums and Scott Callison on percussion. The song selection is a mixture of covers from Son House, Fred McDowell and Willie Dixon as well as some Delta Moon originals. The performance is excellent in all respects from the guitar work down to the vocals of Leigh and Gray. The disc opens with a refreshing take on Son House' "Preachin' Blues" where the vocals of Leigh, in my opinion, shine bright. Gray takes his shot at vocals on the original "House of Dolls" and from those two opening tracks you're hooked. And, while one can quibble as to whether we need another version of Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle" I must say that as tired as that number is, Delta Moon, with the vocals of Leigh and the slide work of Gray, make it sound fresh and exciting. This is a top-notch indie release which is highly recommended.

I could start and finish my review with a single word: FANTASTIC! However maybe it is better to say something more about this abosutely marvellous blues CD. I never heard about this band in my life. I found them by chance surfing Amazon.com catalogue and I bought this CD because of the reviews published below. Really I didn't know what to expect when I put the CD in my car's CD player this morning. What a fantastic surprise! It has been a long time since a record has impressed me so much at the first listening. This is a traditional blues album played from start to finish with incendiary passion, great respect for the tradition and most of all with incredible mastery. The two guitarists' job on slide (electric and acoustic lap) is a real treat that will please even the more "difficult to please" blues lover, and Gina Leigh's singing is comparable to the great masters of the past. Best tunes: House of doll, Mansfiel road, the cover of the all time classic Shake 'em on down, and most of all the stunning original You can't make somebody love you. I liked it so much that the first thing I've done, as soon as I came back home, it was to buy the other two albums available! Five stars +!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God for these guys, October 31, 2003

I had the privlidge of seeing Delta Moon perform at a small club attached to a bowling alley. There was probably 20 people there and Delta Moon kicked ass. Towards the end of the set when Gina Leigh and the boys belted out "Preachin' Blues", I was at church for the very first time in years...I was a jumping up and down. The only problem I have is I don't know which CD I like better, this one or their sophmore effort "Delta Moon Live". These guys are the best thing happening in music today. With the slultry Gina on vocals, the twin lap and bottleneck slide attack and the tighter than tight bass and drums, just try picturing Little Feat with Robert Johnson and Susan Tedeschi (Gina's better) in the band playing Beggar's Banquet in a swamp with everybody drunk, stoned, dancing and a grinning and a hooping and a hollerin'. Trust me, buy this and their live CD and you will not be disappointed, but you still won't be as cool as me because I saw them live and intimate.

There's not a dud track on this whole disc. Everything is gutsy, energetic blues, brought to life by Tom Gray's riffs and his vocals with Gina Leigh. Get it . . . you will NOT be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!, November 19, 2002

I saw Delta Moon at the Harvestmoon Bluesfest in Conyers, Ga. Labor Day Weekend 2002. They kicked off a 3 day festival that included some of the best blues acts of today. (Tab Benoit, Jimmy Thackery, Tommy Castro and Michael Burks just to name a few)
I had never heard of them and wasn't expecting much. They were the first group to perform and when they finished in my mind they were the best act I saw that weekend. Every group that played after them I kept saying to myself "Delta Moon was Better."
The twin slide guitar work of Tom Gray and Mark Johnson is unbelievable and will leave you in amazement. Gina Leigh on vocals was awesome and her dancing is the highlight of a live show. The Drummer and Bassist were two of the best I've heard. I was hooked on them after they played Mansfield Road, Shake Em' On Down and Jelly Roll which appear on this CD. Buy this CD! It is the best Blues CD I have heard in quite along time. The only thing better is to catch them Live. If they come anywhere near you don't hesitate to go see them. They put on a awesome show!

Heard several of these songs on WRFG in Atlanta and loved them. Every song is great blues. Not a miss in the bunch. You'll be playing this CD until you're desperate to hear more songs by Delta Moon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Awesome., November 18, 2002

*This* is the reason why it's well worth the time to seek out indie bands instead of blindly accepting the tunes spinning out of the FM band. The mix of songs stirs up a range of emotions - you'll want to get up and dance with Shake 'Em On Down and the sassy Jelly Roll and then lean back, close your eyes, and gently roll your head and sing along to Play Me a Song, Little Blind Boy and You Can't Make Somebody Love You. No doubt you've heard Wang Dang Doodle by a number of artists (Koko Taylor, Howlin' Wolf - even PJ Harvey??). . .this is one of the smokiest versions you'll hear - and you'll want to hear it over and over. The marriage of Tom and Gina's vocals are unrivaled. Truly awesome. We've had the opportunity to see the Moon play live when they've hit Florida. Don't miss it. ...
