1.0 out of 5 stars Did not work - actually causes me to wake during night
I so wanted to love this. Out of 100+ reviews, only 28 had negative things to say. I thought the negatives were flukes. Sadly, I understand the negative reviews now, because I have a negative opinion of the Delta Sleep System as well.

What didn't I like? As some reviewers noted, it does sound spooky and unsettling. Sort of like a futuristic film sound-track...

Ok, I admit it, I was skeptical of this type of cd as well as those musical healing cds. I enjoy new age and ambient music in general but never found myself falling asleep to it, and as I have sleeping problems in general and compounded by recent stress. I thought I'd tried everything, lifestyle changes, buying a better mattress, using enviornmental sounds, aromatherapy, etc. This caught my eye because I not only had a hard time falling asleep, I woke up multiple times during the night and had a hard time going back to sleep; it was so frusterating. I never woke refreshed and knew I couldn't have been getting quality sleep. Plus I live next to a fairly busy main street which which doesn't help, unless I used earplugs or background music or natural sounds, which did help, but something was still missing: I still never felt like I got any sleep. My problem was getting worse, I was becoming more and more irritable, drained in mind and body and lacked any sort of stamina.

I happened to purchase a decent cd player for the bedroom with a remote recently, then read about this sleep system cd. I feared it would be just another new age cd that wouldn't do anything just like the others - just peaceful music. I was wrong. I was swept away from the start; it's so smooth and deep for lack of better words, you can't help it (adjust the volume to your liking, that made a difference at first, not too loud but just enough to drown out distractions. I did not use headphones.)

First night: I woke up only once (and later than I had been before, a slight victory in itself) plus I fell back asleep right away and stayed asleep until my alarm went off (another small victory, usually I had a hard time falling back asleep, if I ever did). Despite this I still woke up feeling good - but was thinking maybe it was just me hoping it worked.
Second night: I didn't wake up at all, had great dreams and felt good the next morning.
Third night: same thing and even better, woke up refreshed as the cd promised, and had a great day. I am definately going to keep using this!

A skeptic no longer, I highly recommend this sleep system or one like it to anyone who has sleeping troubles, lives in a noisy area, or just wants to get better quality sleep - it works. (My boyfriend was amazed also, he told me to buy more! I did, and purchased a sound healing cd as well, who knows...maybe there is something to all this *smile*) Sweet Dreams!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked very well for me. The music isn't bad either., March 26, 2003
This review is from: Delta Sleep System (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because I was sick of staring at the clock at 3:00 when I had to get up at 5:00. When I first recieved it I decided to try it immediately, in the mid-afternoon. All I remember from that first experience is about three minutes of hazy synthesizer music and then.........two hours later waking up. I didn't even mind sleeping with headphones on, which usually bugs me, even with the most peaceful music. Very impressive. That night I slept on the couch (no stereo in my bedroom at the time) and set the cd player to loop over and over all night. I occasionally woke up during the night but was asleep again in five minutes or less, and I had some very vivid dreams as well, which was cool. To avoid using headphones, I bought a portable cd player, a headphone jack splitter from Radio Shack, and two pair of small self-powered speakers. I placed one pair on the window sill above my headboard and the other pair on a table at my feet. This arrangement works very well as it places me inside the stereo soundfield no matter what, which Dr. Thompson recommends. I also bought his other sleep CD "Ambient music for sleep" and I recommend getting them both, but if you're only going to get one, I recommend this one, just because the general quality of the music seems better to me. It's also effective to play on your computer to keep you from being online all night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing., August 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Delta Sleep System (Audio CD)
For the last 12 years I have struggled with a sleep disturbance. I have tried every natural product, to no avail. I finally started researching brain wave entrainment, to see if I could get to the root of my problem, which is that I wake up in the middle of the night, and can't get back to sleep no matter how tired I am. So I purchased the Delta Sleep system. the first night I tried it, I remember hearing a few chords of the music, then nothing else until my alarm went off the next morning. It was unbelievable. Since that first night, my brain's habit of kicking awake at 4 or 4:30 am has returned, but I find that if I start the cd again, I am able to fall back asleep. Insomnia is a horribly destructive pattern, and I would urge anybody needing relief from it to try this system and see if it works for you too.

Doctor: "Anything else?"
Me: "Yeah, I just can't get to sleep. It takes forever, and I wake up a lot when I do, yada, yada."
Doctor: "Try to listen to some nice, relaxing music before you go to sleep."
Me: "Thanks Doc." To myself: "Fuggetabottit!" How can a professional classical musician listen to "nice, relaxing music?" Already tried. I lie there thinking, ah, more Baroque drivel. I hope they don't take the repeats. If it's piano music, "that's a nice tempo, great voicing, Debussy, betcha it's Michelangeli." I can do this for hours.
Finally a friend set up her guest room with a CD player and the Delta disc. I wanted to be a good house guest, so I put it on. I didn't try to analyze it! I relaxed, and fell asleep. I've studied acoustics, but still have no idea how it gets around my busy little brain and unplugs the damn thing. A miracle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally something that works!!!, January 11, 2003

I recently started having sleeping problems after changing careers. I was always worrying about what I was going to do next in my future and about the next days activities. Eventually, when I became comfortable with my new job I noticed that I was still having trouble sleeping. I would lay there and think about not being able to sleep and I would actually become nervous before bedtime because I would be worried about not getting enough sleep. I ended up searching for a sleep aid cd and found this one. I read about the brainwave entertainment and it seemed very interesting. Long story short, it works sooooo very well!!! I sleep very deeply and I wake up refreshed. There is nothing quite like a good night sleep and this cd will get you to sleep and keep you asleep till your alarm rings!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Going deeper, August 22, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Delta Sleep System (Audio CD)
There is a scientific principle called entrainment. If two items are vibrating side by side at different speeds then the item that vibrates at the lower speed will adjust to vibrate at the same frequency as the other object.

Examples of this are swings in a playground that are swinging out of sync and adjust. Also, in a clock store you may notice the pendulum clocks of the same size swinging back and forth in unison.

Research has been done into the brainwaves of people in deep sleep states. Dr T has incorporated these brainwave patterns into his music to entrain your mind to reach the Delta state.

If you were to be subjected to these Delta waves which are embedded in the relaxing sounds, your mind will gradually reattune itself, so you can reach a similar state.

According to the sleeve notes, Delta is the most relaxed state state of deep sleep where dreaming ceases, and the body goes into its slowest metabolic rate, and lowest pulse and temperature. You need to be in this state for about 40 minutes each night so your body can recharge.

Dr Jeffrey Thompson has done extensive research into stress and the power of relaxing music and entrainment and has used that research to create pulses, chord patterns, sounds from nature such as rainfall, and mystical sounds. Sometimes these sounds are electronically changed to accelerate the mental response to get to the Theta state.

If you have problems with insomnia or emotional clearing, I highly recommend EFT (emotional freedom technique) which is a simple and easy acupressure technique which can be done in about two minutes. Imagine easily letting go of phobias, stress, depression, trauma, forgiveness etc. You can download a free manual at emofree.com or buy various books on the subject at Amazon.

I highly recommend another of Dr T's products Awakened Mind system, which I find very good for creativity. You will be so glad to have that product. The Theta Meditation system is also excellent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not work - actually causes me to wake during night, July 17, 2009
This review is from: Delta Sleep System (Audio CD)
I so wanted to love this. Out of 100+ reviews, only 28 had negative things to say. I thought the negatives were flukes. Sadly, I understand the negative reviews now, because I have a negative opinion of the Delta Sleep System as well.

What didn't I like? As some reviewers noted, it does sound spooky and unsettling. Sort of like a futuristic film sound-track that makes you feel anxious, rather than comforted. Now I know it isn't meant for out-right listening, you're supposed to let it transport you off to deeper sleep. The idea is that these sounds are engineered for your brain, not so much your ear. So I kept trying it over and over, night after night, and I kept getting less restful sleep each night. I found that the lack of consistency of the volume also kept waking me up through-out the night. The volume was quiet and peaceful in one segment, yet a few moments later would be so much louder that it would startle me awake. Also, as another reviewer commented, waking up and hearing these odd sounds playing is a bit disconcerting.

My main problem which I wanted to solve with this sleep cd was that I don't hit deep sleep stage enough each night. I was not having problems falling asleep, nor staying asleep. With this cd playing, however, I woke up all night long - over and over again. So it compounded my problems rather than solving them.

Sorry. I wanted to love this. I wanted it to fix my sleep issues so I could reach deeper restful sleep, but I'll have to keep looking. Maybe the 28% of us who gave it less than sterling reviews are wired differently than the rest of the reviewers who loved it. Definitely test drive it before you buy, in case you're one of us in the 28%.

ADDITION - UPDATE November 2011. While the above review from 2009 is still accurate, I have found that the sleep cd titled SLEEPY OCEAN (also by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson) does fulfill my needs for a good sleep enhancing recording that I can play on repeat each and every night. Hope this information is helpful to you.

My only regret is that I didn't discover this CD sooner. For 20+ years I have been listening to Brian Eno's "Ambient 1:Music for Airports." However, as much as I enjoy Eno's digital looping, I was seeking some variety. I haven't made it all the way through the "Delta Sleep System" as I drop off after 20 to 30 minutes. If for some reason I wake up in the middle of the night, like most nights, I turn on the CD player again. I don't use headphones as they are not comfortable for me but instead I play the CD on my clock radio/CD player and turn the volume down. Finally, I don't have to rely on all my other sleep inducing methods like counting, or doing arithmetic in my head. Thank you so much Mr. Thompson!

4.0 out of 5 stars Delta Sleep CD is Great, February 26, 2003
This review is from: Delta Sleep System (Audio CD)
I don't have any problems falling asleep-(waking up is a different story!)-but I bought this Cd along with The Alpha and Theta. This CD is awesome. How Dr. Jeffrey Thompson puts all these sounds together is always very beautiful and harmonious -no jolting sounds, so it's a smooth slide into dreamland. On this CD there is a more celestial vibe to the music, like your floating out of body deep in space, in the universe's womb (silly sounding but that's the image it conjures up for me). I can see how someone having trouble falling asleep would want this CD, something about it just makes it so sleep falls easy over you-one minute your awake and the next your deep asleep. I'd fall asleep with this CD on but I'm a side sleeper and the headphones would end up digging into my ears. If I had detachable headphones though I would listen to this CD every night. Instead I just listen to it until I'm in that hypogonic (sp?) state.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, April 12, 2006
This review is from: Delta Sleep System (Audio CD)
Without sleeping pills, I hadn't slept the night through in over a year. I would wake up about 1 a.m. and be wide awake for several hours. First night I listened to this CD I woke up at 1 by habit, and put the CD back on and I don't think I made it past the first track. In fact I don't think I've ever made it past the first 3 tracks before falling asleep. Highly recommended!
