THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE WITH OR WITHOUT THE AUDIO CDs. THIS VERSION IS THE BOOK ONLY!!

Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test: Advanced Skill Practice for the iBT is a new series of high-quality practice materials for students preparing to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT).

This test, introduced in September 2005, replaces the earlier computer-based test known as the TOEFL CBT. The iBT assesses proficiency in the four language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important changes in the test are:

  • Speaking skills are evaluated.
  • Some tasks involve integrated skills, such as reading/listening/writing.
  • Knowledge of grammar is not tested separately but is assessed indirectly throughout the test.

Features & Benefits
Delta s Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test is designed specifically for the new version of the test. The course provides ample practice in the English skills evaluated by the new test, along with useful strategies and practical ideas for individual, pair and group activities.

Reading and listening content includes explanation of new item types, such as questions about pragmatics, paraphrasing, and summarizing information from across a text. Speaking and writing content includes practice in integrated-skills tasks, such as developing a topic, taking notes, and connecting information from two sources.

Delta s Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test consists of 36 units in four skill areas, four complete practice tests, over 1,200 questions, an answer key and audio script, progress charts, and 9 hours of audio on 10 CD s.

These five key elements add up to greater confidence and higher scores:

  • Focus-An opening exercise to focus attention, activate prior learning, and stimulate inductive thinking
  • Do You Know...?-A description of a specific skill in reading, listening, speaking, or writing that defines relevant concepts, provides sample questions, explains answers, and identifies useful test strategies
  • Practice-Sets of practice questions to foster ease with TOEFL Test form and content, challenge students to apply their skills, and build skill retention
  • Extension-Classroom activities that promote cooperation, stimulate discussion, extend skill practice, guide peer review, and link the classroom with the real world
  • Progress-Thirty-four timed quizzes simulating parts of the TOEFL Test, with each quiz evaluating the skills studied in one or more units

Market Comparison
Delta s Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test is considered by most students and instructors to be the best TOEFL preparation course on the market. This program is well organized, easy to use, and is flexible enough for classroom use or independent study. It contains more strategies, practice exercises, classroom activities, and complete practice tests than the other preparation courses.

**The audio CDs are necessary for the Listening portions of the text.**

What is new about the TOEFL¨ test and DeltaÕs Key?

The next generation test, or iBT, is an Internet-based test introduced in September 2005. This new test replaces the earlier computer-based test known as the TOEFL¨ CBT. The next generation test assesses proficiency in the four language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important changes in the test are:

Speaking skills are evaluated. Some tasks involve integrated skills, such as reading-listening-writing. Knowledge of grammar is not tested separately but is assessed indirectly throughout the test.

DeltaÕs Key to the Next Generation TOEFL¨ Test is an all-new program designed specifically for the new version of the test.

From the Inside Flap

DeltaÕs Key to the Next Generation TOEFL¨ Test: Advanced Skill Practice

DeltaÕs Key to the Next Generation TOEFL¨ Test: Advanced Skill Practice is a complete test preparation course for high intermediate and advanced learners of English. The book has two objectives: (1) to prepare students to take the new test, and (2) to build the language skills necessary for academic success in an English-speaking environment.

Advanced Skill Practice contains 36 skill units and four full-length practice tests, with more than 1,200 test questions that are similar in form and content to those on the real test. There is enough material for approximately 15 weeks of study. The book can be used in a number of ways:

as the primary text in a comprehensive preparation course; as the primary or secondary text for courses in reading, listening, speaking, or writing skills; or as a resource for independent study, laboratory, or tutoring.

The skill units contain five essential activities: Focus, Do You Know...?, Practice, Extension, and Progress.

Focus Ð An opening exercise to focus attention, activate prior learning, and stimulate inductive thinking.

Do You Know...? Ð A description of a specific skill in reading, listening, speaking, or writing that defines relevant concepts, provides sample questions, explains answers, and identifies useful test strategies.

Practice Ð Sets of practice questions to foster ease with TOEFL¨ test form and content, challenge students to apply their skills, and build skill retention.

Extension Ð Classroom activities that promote cooperation, stimulate discussion, extend skill practice, guide peer review, and link the classroom with the real world.

Progress Ð Thirty-four timed quizzes simulating parts of the test, with each quiz evaluating the skills studied in one or more units.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real PRACTICE Book, August 3, 2006
This review is from: Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test: Advanced Skill Practice Book (Paperback)
The most valuable thing offered by this book is PRACTICE without which it is fairly difficult to get a high TOEFL score.

I have read through 4 or 5 other books that aim at helping to get ready for TOEFL, and I really found it frustrating that a good half of such 'test guides' is always, or almost always, stuffed with long explanations of the structure of the test and some other theoretical points, which can be easily found in TOEFL bulletin or on the official TOEFL site. Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL test is really a practice book. Its short practical advice on test taking strategies and a lot of exercises and quizes make an effective combination.

N.B.: Pay attention that the CDs, which contain listening material for different sections of the book, are offered as a separate item and if one wants to get the most of the practice guide, I think it is a good idea to get the CDs too. However, I must add that it is possible to work with the book without the CDs because all the audioscripts are given in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book but don't forget order your CD, September 13, 2007
This review is from: Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test: Advanced Skill Practice Book (Paperback)
I bought this book because my friends told me this one is the top preparation book for TOEFL test. Yes, it's pretty good in organization. The only problem is that it's not sold together with CD so that when I place order, I forgot to order CDs with the book. In addition, because IBT is based on Internet that require a computerized platform, the biggest disadvantage of this book is that it didn't simulate the true enviroment of test. So you should consider to buy another one to practice test.

5.0 out of 5 stars It helps you a lot!, January 19, 2007
This review is from: Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test: Advanced Skill Practice Book (Paperback)
This book seems to be an old book, published in March, 2005.

However, this provides really awesome contents. It provides general but useful strategies of each section.

In spite of being a student, I already five iBT books. I felt this is really helpful, esp. listening section. This is because talking speed is almost same as real iBT test. Other books... sorry, not fast.

'course, this book does not include Audio CDs. If you want to practice listening section, you should pay little bit more. It is worthy of buying.

I guarantee that if you complete this book, you might be able to get more than 61 for beginner, more than 79-80 for people who are familiar with iBT TOEFL test.
