2.0 out of 5 stars Merely an entertainment work.
The Deltora books are littered with repetitive words and horrible language. They are merely for those who wants to be entertained and cannot or will not read books that will actually stretch the mind.
I recommend Persuasion by Jane Austen, The Secret LIfe of Bees by (I forget the author's name), or Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful edition of one of the great fantasies ever, September 9, 2008

Oh, how thrilled am I to finally have a copy of this book! I was introduced to Deltora about two years ago and absolutely fell in love with one of the most remarkable fantasy series I have ever read--kids and adults alike. Albeit written to childen, the story is thoroughly enjoyable with loveable (or despicable) characters, great ideas and themes, and a wonderfully established variety of cultures and mythologies, all centered around the continent of Deltora.

Emily Rodda writes simply, but it is this simple style that makes this feel like an old story being told--and she balances it with surprisingly complex plots and puzzles that become guilty pleasures.

Delotora Quest is a must-read for all fantasy lovers out there. I am thrilled to have a snobby single edition, and this is beautiful--hardcover with even a bookmark (I apologize, but I do so love those ribbon book marks). The book looks great, and it's a perfect way to collect this fantastic story.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!, October 19, 2010

This series would be a great starting place for the young fantasy reader. It has a great storyline and is well written. The language, action, violence depiction is appropriate for young (3rd or 4th grade) readers and the story is compelling enough for even adults.

I would highly recommend this to children and adults as well as Ms. Rodda's other series, Rowan of Rin. She really relates well to kids and tells a story that girls or boys could relate to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice collection of stories, March 8, 2011

I ordered this collection for my 9-year old son, and he absolutely loves them. He frequently asks me very strange questions, such as, "Dad, do you know some of the ways that people can get turned into werewolves?" My answer was of course... "Well, uh, they get bit I suppose." He grins. "Nope, that's not all. They can drink from the tracks of a werewolf too." "Oh," I answer, "that's good to know." You get the idea. The books have his imagination racing, and that can only be a good thing. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series!, July 28, 2010

I first encountered this series when my five-year-old brought "Forests of Silence" (the second of the eight books) home from the school library. Although it's aimed at a slightly older audience, there was nothing inappropriate for him in the book, and he loved having it read to him. But school ended and the local libraries didn't have the series, so off I went to Amazon. Here, I found the individual books, but also this edition.

What's great about the series: Each story has puzzles to solve, clues to figure out, and so forth. It keeps the reader/listener engaged with the story. My five-year-old, my 10-year-old, and I all love the books -- and I'll be passing the book to my mother when we're done with it. I'll confess to keeping on reading after my child has fallen asleep because I'm engaged in the story and want to know what happens next! There are some scary/intense parts, but so far nothing to cause bad dreams after bedtime reading, even for the little one.

What's great about the edition: This is a very high-quality book. It has a bound-in ribbon bookmark, which is really nice, since it definitely takes a while to read! I took the paper slipcover off so that it wouldn't get battered while we're reading it. I can definitely see rereading the series in later years, so I'm glad to have the hardcover edition. Since there are eight books in the series, the price for this volume is excellent!

Who will enjoy this book? Anyone who likes young-reader fantasy. The "tag suggestions" list "Juvenile fiction - ages 9-12," which is probably a good estimate for the target audience. Any child old enough to enjoy chapter books with few pictures is probably old enough, unless they're prone to nightmares. The stories are full of mythical beasts, and some are definitely evil! As with many books written for this age group, the writing itself is excellent. Personally, I can't wait to get into some of Emily Rodda's other books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deltora Quest Is A winner, May 22, 2009
This review is from: Deltora Quest: The Complete Series (Hardcover)
I remember The Deltora Quest Series. It is my now 20 year old son's favorite childhood series of books. Always a reader, his bookshelves were filled with Mysteries and Resource books. He had ordered the 1st book from a school order form and then he impatiently waited until each new volume became available. There wasn't a single book in the entire series including The Shadowlands Series that he didn't enjoy and share with his friends. I too read each book and we had many discussions regarding the plots, themes and characters. This was a very positive experience and I would highly recommend this book, this 1 volume complete collection, for young readers grade 2-6 especially if they enjoy a well written engaging story and can value the completion of a worthwhile quest.

I am very happy with my purchase of the Deltora Quest bindup. I like that all of the books are bound together in a single hardback edition. My son and I are very much enjoying reading these stories together! We started with the Dragon Quest series, not knowing about the Deltora Quest series. It's great understanding how Lief, Barda and Jasmine came to be companions, and the stories are wonderfully creative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids' favorite, October 7, 2011
This review is from: Deltora Quest: The Complete Series (Hardcover)
My 17-year-old daughter read the various Deltora books when she was much younger, and loved them. She kept them on her shelf for years. Now she has bequeathed them to her 10-year-old brother, who is now on the third book. She fusses if he mistreats them in any way -- after all, she wants children of her own some day and plans to have them read the Deltora books, too. As an avid reader, I find this delightful!
