So, the kids want their own phone? Let them build one! This "build it yourself" telephone kit features flashing, neon lights that go off as the phone rings, as well as all the features found in standard phones, including redial, mute, and ringer on/off switches. It's easy to assemble because it doesn't require any soldering or special tools. And, yes, kids really will have a working phone when they've finished. The printed circuit board is preassembled and tested before it's purchased. Not only will this help kids learn how phones work, but the finished item is really cool. The receiver and body are both clear plastic, so kids can see the phone's internal electronic components. The flashing lights are really neat--especially in the dark! While the finished product--a working phone with see-through cover and flashing lights--is great, this toy is definitely not easy to assemble. It took a bright 9-year-old, her 40-year-old aunt, and the child's grandfather (well-versed in electronics) two hours or more to finally get all the pieces in place! The parts seem to be well made and the phone really *does* work, but the directions are very difficult to understand and there was no explanation whatsoever of how a phone works. In short, what was supposed to be a fun "learning experience" turned out to be an exercise in frustration. This kit is probably best suited for teenagers or adults who already have some background in electronics.
