Good but Geddy deserves much better!, April 11, 2009
This review is from: Deluxe Bass TAB Collection: Authentic Bass TAB (Paperback)
Don't get me wrong, I am very pleased to see a "new" Rush bass tab book tabbing the glory of Geddy's masterful playing, but unfortunately, 70% of this is purely recycled/reprinted tabs from the Rush bass book that has been around forever. Also, there are some things missing from the tabs- in fact some of the newer ones are incorrect at several areas (they have oversimplified what Geddy is playing eliminating dead notes and sixteenth notes.) I would give this 3.5 stars if that were available.
Case in point Far Cry- During the verses Geddy uses this technique where he plays very fast sixteenth notes by flicking his index finger back and forth like a pick. This book has simplified this line to a more playable eighth note figure, but it is not what Geddy plays at all! (I have seen him play it live and have no doubt of what he plays.)
Also, for the tabs they reprinted verbatim from the earlier Rush bass anthology they could have at least cleaned up the graphics and fixed a few tab errors, Nope, they reprinted them fuzzy text and all.
I still give this four stars because you are getting a master class in Rock Bass playing from one of the top 3 bass players of all time.
One other note Alfred- on Big MOney- they are called Dead Notes- and he plays a ton of them throughout the song- yet none are tabbed.
To summarize good to have a new Rush bass tab book, bad that so little respect is paid to Geddy's playing- If you are going to tab the man's work who made 1000's pick up the bass- Do it Right! No excuses.
