Editorial Reviews

Limited Edition 19 CD box set from the British Folk legend. Includes 11 CDs featuring Sandy's complete studio recordings with Alex Campbell, Johnny Silvo, Fotheringay, Strawbs, Fairport Convention and solo with additional content; outtakes, demos and live recordings. There are eight CDs of bonus material; unreleased songs, demos, unreleased BBC recordings, alternate takes, live recordings, acoustic versions, and rare radio interviews. Each CD is housed in an individual gatefold digipak sleeve. The box comes with a 72-page 11" square hardback book containing over 100 rare and mostly unseen photographs, Sandy's handwritten lyrics (many of which are unrecorded songs) and fascinating memorabilia. The box also contains a reproductions of a beautiful original Island press pack, an exceptionally rare A3 promo color poster for Northstar Grassman and the Ravens, a set of Postcards, the receipt for the purchase of her first piano and one of Sandy's handwritten notebooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Sandy Denny Collection December 28, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I received this as a Christmas gift and I am thrilled that after buying a three CD set and then a five CD set, Sandy Denny's work has finally been so thoroughly been packaged so beautifully. She had the most beautiful voice and was such a brilliant songwriter. This set pays proper tribute to her genius. What I do love most is all the home demos which was one disc in the set, "A Boxful of Treasures", but here, there are several discs with many more home demos. Sandy had a voice that only needed her voice and her piano. The home demos are amazingly beautiful and I am grateful that all the tapes in the vaults have, at long last, been thoroughly researched. Sandy didn't need layers of production on her solo albums. The strings merely took away attention from her voice. None of her albums were lacking value but the style of production dates them and the home demos are timeless. I do hope that more music lovers become aware of Sandy Denny's music. As I told others that I was waiting so eagerly for this box set, no one even knew who she was and that is a shame for someone who was so greatly gifted. Sandy Denny died at the age of 31 in 1978. Folk music didn't come to a halt on either side of The Big Pond but Sandy wasn't merely a folk singer she was also a folk-rock singer. If you like The Strawbs, Fairport Convention, and female singer songwriters, I am certain that you'd love Sandy Denny. What Great Britain gave to us in pop with Dusty Springfield they gave us Sandy Denny in folk music. Her music will live on forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece December 24, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I borrowed this synopsis from another writer's overview:

Disc 1 - All the recordings she made for Saga Records, including the re-recorded superior versions issued later.

2 - Collects all the tracks she made with The Strawbs, including the versions issued later with overdubbed strings. This CD also contains all 4 tracks from the very obscure Swedish Fly Girls soundtrack, making their first appearance since the record was issued (three years after the soundtrack was recorded) in 1972.

3 - Most of What We Did On Our Holidays and the whole of Unhalfbricking. There's two unreleased items: an alternate version of Mr. Lacey with Sandy on lead vocal and a different vocal take of Autopsy.

4 - All of Liege and Lief minus the Jigs and Reels. Two unreleased tracks: Come All Ye (Take 1) and Matty Groves (Take 1), the latter rocks much harder than the official version in the second part of the song.

5 - Most of Fotheringay and Fotheringay 2 plus previously issued bonus tracks.

6 - Northstar Grassman and The Ravens and the Sandy vocals from The Bunch. Some previously issued bonus tracks are included.

7 - The Sandy album, plus some bonus tracks like the Pass Of Arms soundtrack. Two unreleased tracks: A slightly longer different take of For Nobody To Hear with some great guitar work from RT, and The Music Weaver without strings.

8 - Like An Old Fashioned Waltz - most of the bonus tracks are previously unreleased: versions of Solo and Like An Old Fashioned Waltz without strings, plus alternate takes of Friends, Dark The Night and No End.

9 - Sandy's vocals from Live Convention and Rising For The moon. Three great unreleased tracks: alternate versions of One More Chance, White Dress and Dawn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes your breath away January 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am writing my first-ever Amazon review because I am so moved by receiving this boxed set. As a Sandy Denny fan from her early days, let me just say to anyone considering purchasing this set: This is it. There may never be a more fitting--and glorious--tribute to a singer. And Sandy deserves it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Work Of Art December 8, 2010
By Jim Z
Format:Audio CD
Wow.....Sandy Denny had a pure , angelic voice that one never tires of hearing. Believe me , there is a lot to digest on this set. It will be months before everything really sinks in.
I just wanted to write to Denny fan's that you need to snap this up quickly if it truly is a limited edition.....Check the price on Amazon.UK , it was cheaper there even with the import costs.
Enjoy

UPDATE : It has now been over 3 years since this initial review. I have listened completely through seven times , and am still intrigued by this box's allure. It is worth every penny. I listen to music every day for about 4 hours a day , and Sandy finds her way in weekly. What a great release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic !! January 11, 2011
By ALC
Format:Audio CD
Everything about this set is superlative. The music has never sounded this good, especially on some of the early recordings and some material previously available only on bootlegs. The hardcover book is of the highest quality. Even if you have most of her recordings, I think this box is worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative January 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is it! The box set that all Sandy Deny devotees have been waiting for. The demos are a revelation, especially Sandy's guitar playing which is superlative. She really was the greatest vocalist that the British Isles has ever produced. I have only one criticism however. I received two copies of disc fourteen and no disc thirteen. Despite contacting Amazon U.K., Island Records and the compiler of the box set I have been unable to obtain disc thirteen. If anyone reading this can obtain a copy for me please email me and I would be only too happy to reimburse you.
