A Word Of Warning...,
By
This review is from: Deluxe EP (MP3 Download)
Just a warning to anyone thinking they can use this to get the new songs included in the new Deluxe Edition of Rockferry. This set is missing track 14, "Oh Boy" from the Deluxe Edition and has replaced it the with the remixed version of "Mercy" featuring The Game. Maybe this is an error on Amazon's part, but it just seems worth mentioning.

I absolutely love Duffy's style. She's got the voice and smoothness of the 60's era.P.S. The remix of Mercy was tight.

The tunes aren't as strong as "Rockferry," but they're worth it.,

The seven songs on "Deluxe EP" by Duffy aren't quite as strong as those that appear on her stellar ROCKFERRY, but they are certainly great examples of the modern soul sound. The standout here is definitely the Burt Bacharach tune "Please Stay," featuring Duffy's charged vocals at their finest; the Duffy original "Breaking My Own Heart" follows a close second. "Rain On Your Parade" sounds like it could have been a James Bond theme song from the seventies (I mean that as a compliment), and "Stop" will have you sashaying your hips (even if you're a guy...yes, I did it, and I'm proud of it). "Fool For You" is a bit cliched, but with Duffy's vocals, it's a fine tune. All of the songs here (including the "Mercy" remix, of course) are themed: a heart breaking, a soul recovering...except for the final track, "Enough Love," which is a bit too kitschy to be enjoyable. It's a shame, really, that the EP ends on such a positive note; we like Duffy best when she's unhappy. Or, if she feels compelled to sing happy songs, at least make them ones that aren't as sappy as "Enough Love."Combining the passion of soul, the rhythm of Motown, all of it sung in a voice that is uniquely her own, Duffy represents a welcomed breath of fresh air in the contemporary pop world. I myself am proof of this: I rarely listen to popular records anymore, but when I first heard "Mercy," I took notice. Of course, I did the same with Amy Winehouse, and have since come to regret it...but nobody's perfect. And Duffy is definitely a more talented artist: she manages to live in the songs she sings/writes. In my humble opinion, that is the sign of a true musical artist.

Great song or two. Great voice. But for anyone looking for her what I understand is her big (possibily debut) album well look elsewhere. This ain't it. This ain't Rockferry and it contains like only 1 song (albeit a good one) on Rockferry. I swear Amazon switched album art. ;) Actually the album you get with the download says Rockferry. Misleading!Ah well I got in for $.99. Still for others about to pay $6 or whatever, make sure what you really want isn't her Rockferry album. |
