2.0 out of 5 stars Tired Rush Retread Transcriptions, September 6, 2009
By
YJM "amazon fan" (Somewhere In The South) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deluxe Guitar TAB Collection: Authentic Guitar TAB (Authentic Guitar-Tab Editions) (Sheet music)
Don't confuse this book with the Rush Anthology also by Alfred. This book is completely new, and while there is overlap in both books the transcriptions in this book are done by new transcribers. I saw this book in a local music book store and was intrigued. It's difficult to find accurate Rush transcriptions. The Rush anthology has a decent song selection but I do not feel the transcriptions are very accurate in that book. They seem much better in this one, and far more accurate (although they screwed up Tom Sawyer which no one seems to get right). However the song selection is what brings this rating down. How many times are we going to see transcriptions of Spirit of Radio, Closer to the Heart, Limelight, Red Barchetta, The Trees, Freewill, and YYZ? Enough already! It's the same way I feel about seeing those songs on live Rush albums. They were fantastic on Exit Stage Left, but they have worn their welcome.

There are a couple of nice surprises here though, such as:
1. Working Man
2. Vital Signs
3. Subdivisions
4. Fly By Night
5. The Big Money

The rest of the book for me however is useless. Besides the over transcribed songs mentioned above, and the few gems I noted, the rest of the book is devoted to their 90's and 00's catalog and I am not a fan of Rush during those time periods. If you are however these songs will be right up your alley:
1. Dreamline
2. Farcry
3. Ghost of a Chance
4. The Larger Bowl
5. One Little Victory
6. Show Don't Tell (technically a 1989 release, but I don't like Presto so I lump it in with their 90's material)
7. Test For Echo

The Rush anthology has a better song selection, it's a shame the transcription accuracy wasn't there. Rush have such an incredible catalog to pull from in the period 1975 - 1987, why must they always transcribe the same songs? What about the 2112 suite, Something For Nothing, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, In the End, Beneath, Between and Behind, Bastille Day, Lakeside Park, The Necromancer, A Farewell to Kings, Cygnus X1, Cinderella Man, Hemispheres suite, Jacob's Latter, Entre Nous, Natural Science, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, Chemistry, Analog Kid, Between the Wheels, Kid Gloves, Prime Mover, the Mission etc. For some reason so much of Rush's back catalog has been ignored by transcribers in favor of the "hits" and it's a shame, because I'm sure early Rush fans like myself of which there are many, would gobble up well-done early Rush transcriptions. Maybe one day that will happen, but right now, today, we have the anthology, and this new deluxe edition and both of them are sorely lacking.
