I ordered this because I am starting truck driving school in November. This is the truck drivers "BIBLE" as far as printed maps go. This book has more information that 95% of regular car drivers would ever need, but EVERYTHING a commercial truck driver needs to know. First off, the atlas is HUGE. This thing is not small in the least bit. You will have no trouble plotting or planning trips using this atlas. It is every bit of 18x12 inches, but with the spiral bound pages, lays flat on whatever page you need it on. The pages are laminated, so if you need to make notes with dry erase markers, they just wipe right off. As well, spills and other fluids will not damage the pages, however, I would say that you may want to be careful with it, as it is somewhat clumsy when you are trying to hold it in your hands simply due to the size. The spiral binding MAY be a weak point as far as pages getting torn partially or wholly out due to mishandling, but if that is the case, I will come back later and amend my review, but for now, I am extremely happy with my purchase. If you are a budding, or rookie truck driver, then don't even give it a second thought. BUY THIS NOW. It is written to compliment the RM GPS unit, but don't EVER make the mistake of relying entirely on a GPS unit and not having a printed atlas... If you have only ONE atlas, make it THIS one..it's an investment you will never regret.

We bought this for three reasons: avoid routes that have underpasses less than 13' high, durability with laminated pages that won't tear/get 'dog-earred' and then a spiral bounding so it lays flat when open. Kind of pricey, but we like having printed maps and a gps when traveling in our motorhome.

I planned on using this atlas for traveling in my motorhome mainly because of the laminated pages. However I was very disappointed in the lack of detail on the maps. They show the main routes but are not much use for off of the main routes plus the print is quite small. It might be good for truckers but if you need an atlas for recreational travel, this is not your best choice.

It is a good atlas. But you can buy it $20 cheaper at a truck stop. I guess amazon has to try to make money

this is what my boyfriend needed to make his job easier. He loved the protective covering on the pages. It made him very happy and that makes me very happy!

This is one of the best tools a professional truck driver could ever have in the cab. It has all the best routes, tandem settings and weights for each state, tolls, port of entries and scales, map grid and more. Works perfect for route planning. I love the laminated pages. I use a grease pencil on them to chart my course, pre-plan my route and write the details on my window.

Although GPS is nice too, it just doesn't always give you the right course. This Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Road Atlas gives truck routes that you can use and stay out of trouble. Whereas the GPS tends to give the shortest route that may end up in a pretty hefty ticket and a dinged CSA score.

Example: Atlanta, GA
Law: If you don't have a load going directly into Atlanta, GA, you have to... No... you need to use the By-pass/Loop or the DRIVER could end up with a ticket of up to $5000.00. Most of the time a GPS will send you straight through, this Road Atlas gives you the correct path. So heed caution when just relying on GPS alone. Plus, I don't know of any trucker out there that wants to give $5000.00 of long traveled miles away. That one ticket could be a career ender.

I picked up my copy up at the Flying J in Limon, CO for only $29.95, but the thing I don't like about this road atlas is that it has a metal spiral instead of a plastic one. The metal spirals tend to get bent up fairly quickly, especially from daily use. Otherwise, this road atlas gives me everything to plan my destination.

The point is... this is one tool every trucker should have in the cab. Highly recommended.
