4.0 out of 5 stars Parthenon Huxley = Perfect rootsy power-pop, April 13, 2007

This review is from: Deluxe (Audio CD)
When I heard this CD and Parthenon's band P. Hux live in the 90's, I thought, wow, with great production this guy could be legendary. Well, then I hear Parthenon's first album and a CD of out-takes from the 80's and 90's. I was completely wrong. The synth keyboards, flashy Van Halen guitar, backing vocals and kitchen sink drowned his great songwriting. "Deluxe" is unadorned and in retrospect, perfect. I'd give it 5 stars, but it's only 34 minutes. Every song is strong and Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" can not compare in songwriting (okay, Robert Quine & Richard Lloyd's guitars are beautiful).
It's hard to describe Parthenon's voice, but how about a mixture of Tom Petty, John Lennon, George Harrison and himself? The vocals are outstanding and his guitar-playing is perfect for the material. If you like The Beatles, Byrds, Stones, Dylan, Big Star & Petty, treat yourself to this underground legend's best work. I think he sings with ELO now... They should be singing his songs!
