This review is from: Deluxe Pyrex 10-pc. Storage Set (Kitchen)
The uses you'll find for this ensemble of Pyrex containers are limited only by your imagination.

The bowls and their covers are as air-tight as Rubbermaid and Tupperware, making them perfect for organizing the ingredients of an elaborate recipe ahead of time. Made from pure heat-resistant Pyrex glass, the bowls won't absorb food odors or stains, so a bowl that has just contained chopped onions can be washed, rinsed, dried and immediately filled with strawberries, without fears of tainting one food with the flavor of another.

The 5-cup and 1 2/3 cup bowls are the right size for putting away individual servings from tonight's dinner while the 3-quart bowl will swallow up the rest of the main entree. When it's time to have lunch tomorrow, the vented covers release just enough steam while keeping the contents from drying out in the microwave oven.

An added bonus: The smaller bowls are identical to those in the Pyrex Personal Portable ensemble (also sold by Target through Amazon.com). By combining the 2 sets, you'll quickly earn back the purchase price in what you would have spent for fast food or lunch from the cafeteria at work. After that, the savings are all yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for fridge and vents for microwave; bad for arthritics, December 18, 2004

I love these storage containers. They clean easily by hand or dishwasher, and the little pop-open microwave vent is fantastic. You hardly have to open them to go from Fridge to microwave. As other people have said, they're cleaner than plastic.

Pyrex does occasionally crack or break (I broke a liquid 1-cup measure by pouring boiling water into it), but that's pretty rare and I think I'd buy their ovenware casseroles for a real oven.

Note that these lids are much easier to open using both hands--you hold the dish and sort of peel the lid off from the small-lip side. This takes a little effort and proved to be a strain on the wrist for my mom, who has carpal-tunnel type wrist issues. So, I think I'd avoid these for people who are arthritic as well. But I love them and keep buying more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Update of the original Pyrex storage product, June 26, 2006
By
This review is from: Deluxe Pyrex 10-pc. Storage Set (Kitchen)
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry. Cooking is my form of therapy. I have owned my set of these for at least 5 years, and possibly longer. Additionally, I also own a set of the original Pyrex storage containers that do not have a vet.

The glass that these containers are made from is very tough. I have not broken a single one of these containers in the time that I have owned them. This may not sound like much but I am hard on things, and for all of them to still be intact is a minor miracle in my home. The glass is very tough.

Pros:
1. Glass is very tough, seems almost indestructible
2. I like that they are not plastic, so I feel safe about reheating food in them
3. The lids fit well and provide a tight seal
4. The lids of this upgraded product appear to be more durable than the original Pyrex lids
5. The vent is nice for microwave reheating without messing up your microwave's interior
6. These containers fit well into lunch bags so that you family can take your healthy home cooked food to work or school.
7. The containers stack well inside each other for space cramped kitchens
8. You can bake in these and then cool the food (I place the entire container into a roasting pan filled with ice water) put on the lid and slide the pan into the refrigerator.
9. You can freeze food in these containers

Cons:
1. The lids are easy to use for me (I am 44 years old) but I suspect that they might pose a problem for older arthritic hands.
2. The original Pyrex storage containers do not stack efficiently inside the new design. The shape is just a little different.

Overall, I would recommend these to anyone that likes to cook in quantity and doesn't like to reheat food in plastic. I use these everyday in my kitchen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lid Up, March 20, 2006

This review is from: Deluxe Pyrex 10-pc. Storage Set (Kitchen)
This Pyrex storage set was ordered because I needed a replacement for my 3 quart
glass Pyrex storage bowl of a certain age. The cover on that bowl had split. When
I received the new set, I was uncertain about the shape of the glass containers: not
rounded bowls, but squattish truncated cones, unlike the rounded shapes which are
so welcoming of just-off-the-stove soups. Although I'm resigned to the bowl shape,
the covers are vexing. They do not fit easily on the glass containers. They do not seal
with a satisfying "snap" or "snick." In fact, they are difficult for aging fingers to get on
at all.
That said, I will continue to use these containers, hoping that, with time, the covers will
become more relaxed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out with plastic, in with glass, June 12, 2004

These storage containers are sturdy and attractive--a great alternative to plastic. Especially for microwaving, I'm getting away from the potential health risks of plastic. This set is a very good choice and value!

4.0 out of 5 stars I hate plastic!, January 19, 2005

I love Pyrex because I don't like to microwave plastic containers. That said, I like the 2-cup Pyrex containers that you can buy by themselves better than the ones in this set. On those, the lid just pops up when it's done. I haven't used the features on this one, but the tops are lower quality, and the smaller bowls are just a little too small. The large bowl can double as a mixing bowl, though, and I still love the glass.--Jacob's wife

Much healthier than microwaving in toxin-leaching plastic.. food tastes good. Darn hard to break and the lid is more durable than other brands so it really lasts well. I take these to work for my lunches.. mmm mmm.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and practical, January 15, 2006

These are responsible for fewer dishes (no dishwasher here), less cleanup time & a prettier table. The day after Thanksgiving, I can just pop the leftovers in the microwave & put these dishes right out on the table because they look like serving bowls when their lids are off. They stack & look great - no more plastic tomato stains! The lids are a little hard to seal at first but once you get the knack, they are fine. I love them. I would not, however, get one for my arthritic mother-in-law since they can be a bit tough to open or seal at first. My only wish is that they came with glass lids for conventional oven use. They are not recommended for stove-top use.
