We gave this machine to our 9-year-old. She loves it and has been able to work it herself without any help. Granted she has used my machine with some guidance in the past, but she was sewing away within 30 minutes of opening it. It is light enough for her to pick up and put it away but does a reasonably nice job of stitching as well. We would buy it again.

My six year old received this as a Christmas gift from her grandmother. She is very interested in sewing and is capable of doing a great deal independently, but this toy 'sewing machine' was a major frustration for us both. It continually came unthreaded, was very slow and noisy, and generally did a lousy job of stitching. As a replacement (before her interest in sewing was completely destroyed by the frustration of using this), we purchased an inexpensive Singer sewing machine for her which works nicely and will last her much, much longer.

Despite paying $65 for this sewing machine, don't think you're getting a smaller version of the real thing. Our daughter is a creative fanatic and we thought this would be a good way for her to get her feet wet with sewing. We had to have her grandmother work on the sewing machine just to get the basics in place and then it works OK. Our daughter was underwhelmed by the final capacity of the machine.
