Deluxe Wood Edition Scrabble Crossword Game

As a Scrabble enthusiast, I was excited to learn that my group would be playing on a new wooden board one evening. It is a fairly durable and nice looking board. Two or three commented positively on the new board. Poised for play everyone happily drew tiles and the game commenced. By the end of the second game I went out to my car and retrieved my plastic deluxe turntable board. I wanted to like the new wooden board, but it just wasn't as functional, for us anyway, as the old standby. The grid isn't centered on the board's surface due to an offset allowing room for the letter distribution table. This was somewhat irksome. The tile racks have a smaller footprint, making them less stable. Shuffling your tiles around on your rack looking for a bingo won't do you a bit of good if you suddenly spill them onto the table letting everyone know exactly what you're planning to do. The tiles were very pretty and smooth, but difficult to hold on to in numbers over three, owed to their slick surfaces. The tile bag with this set was markedly smaller than with other sets. The rotating board's footprint was larger than usual, necessitating a clearance radius that all but pushes your tile rack off of the playing table. To the point, I really wanted to like this board, but didn't. Aside from the comments I've made above, it really is a nice board. If the things I've mentioned wouldn't bother you, then you'll be glad you bought it. Otherwise, you'd be better off playing on the old standard Scrabble folding board.

First the game itself: Scrabble rocks!! The game builds vocabulary, logic, math... all kinds of skills. Folks of all levels can play together - and still have a good time (try that in monopoly or chess :)) Second, this board is the best... to have a board that rotates and not have to worry about messing up tiles when you place yours is definitely worth the few extra dollars... may take a little getting used to for folks who have played decades on the old boards but it is worth it. Only thing left to do is buy a vocabulary builder book and an official dictionary for the perfect Christmas presents!!

I had originally received the Parker Brothers Scrabble Turntable game, but when we opened it, it was plastic and poor quality. I returned it for the Hasbro WOOD turntable Scrabble game. I am VERY happy with the quality of this game and would recommend the Hasbro WOOD turntable Scrabble game to everyone. It is worth the extra cost for the quality of the playing board!!

After looking over various reviews, most good and a few bad, we took the leap of faith and gave it a try. Aside from being difficult to find in a retail store we recommend it. We like the fact the game stores everything inside itself and can actually be left out as a center peice in a game room. Very classic looking and we anticipate it will test the sands of time. We like the swivel and find it isn't difficult to use regardless of the tile holders. You just need to move the holder closer to you to facilitate it's movement but certainly not a hassle.

Im really impressed with this game. The wood is very nice! Its not cheap looking. The thing i love best about this scrabble is the grid! Finally the letters wont move around and drive me crazy :)

Enthusiasts of the game Scrabble will love this board.

Previous reviewers have mentioned a problem with tiles falling off their racks, and I, too, have had this issue. The base of the racks seem to be a bit too small to hold the tiles.

Otherwise, this board is perfection!

If you can get one, grab it. Scrabble has stopped manufacturing this version and started selling one made of plastic that looks like wood. I gave this game 4 stars for education as it is only as instructive as the adults allow it to be. Keep a dictionary handy and don't discourage looking things up!

The wood version looks spiffy. Just the thing for us retro grownups. Then playing with friends, I like Scrabble over Monopoly because Scrabble reduces that Boardwalk schadenfreude. Also I suggest you consider purchasing "The Official Scrabble Player's Dictionary Fourth Edition" and the "Franklin Scrabble Companion" (3rd ed of the dictionary but it finds words for you).

Shipment packing was awful. Hope you have a better experience with this. The few moments I saw the wooden scrabble game before I refused the shipment, it looked wonderful.

On opening the wooden side of the game was split completely through.

Amazon packed the cardboard scrabble box with a layer of amazon bubble pack (large sausage sized bubbles) on top. The scrabble game was free to move around under the amazon bubble wrap. So when the shipping box was tossed, it got a somewhat crumpled corner (not unusual with sizeable packages). The insufficient inner packing could not protect against that slightly crumpled corner.

This is a great Scrabble version because it is so fancy. I leave mine out in the family room and it doesn't look like a "toy." Since all the pieces get tucked under the game board, it just looks like an "elegant game" for the adults. Plus the dark cherry wood matches my furniture. This is the only thing on my coffee table. AND WHO DOESN'T LOVE SCRABBLE????????

I bought one game for myself and one as a housewarming gift for a Scrabble enthusiast friend. We both LOVE it.
