From the Inside Flap

Introduction

The printing industry is changing. Technology is being applied to increase the productivity of traditional processes, while at the same time other technology is challenging those processes. The concepts of on-demand printing can be applied to conventional printing, but, more likely, they will be applied to digital printing.

This publication summarizes the concepts, technologies, and applications of on-demand printing. It will help you to understand the rapid changes that are taking place and provide a base of knowledge for decision making. GATF has been involved with on-demand approaches since its installation of a Xerox DocuTech in 1991. Many of our publications are now produced on- demand. Using this approach, we have minimized our inventory costs and increased the frequency of revisions to our textbooks.

The market for short-run print production is expanding, and customers now define turnaround time in hours rather than days. The technology continues to evolve, incorporating color into the many on-demand solutions on the market.

GATF is committed to assist its members in sorting through the solutions. We will continue to evaluate the technology using our test forms and producing our short-run textbooks. We will communicate our experiences through our publishing efforts.

We believe that on-demand printing presents many opportunities to the printing and publishing industry to expand their capabilities for their customers. Our experience has indicated that it provides a nice complement to the lithographic process and is an alternative to electronic distribution of data.
