This was very differnt from what I was expecting. Instead of a fairly typical Kaiju movie with Something Big tramping over Tokyo we get an interesting, if odd, look at several misfits connected with a prophetic vision that one of them has of a future disaster. More of a character study that an action film. The dream/prophecy sequence of Demeking doing what all Kaiju do was very well done and an interesting looking monster scored for me. There are several indications that the prophecy will arrive. This was based on a Japanese manga or graphic novel and I have no idea if the original story line was continued beyond the stopping point of the film. Worth a look if you know what you're getting into.

I purchased this film with little idea of its content and plot. I have been a kaiju fan for many years. Demeking, in my opinion is a very good film, but quite a different film and a pleasant surprise. I was instantly drawn into its characters. Without going into plot or how the creature is revealed. Demeking is set in the early 70's in Japan. If you are looking for beasts destroying each other in a titanic battle with the military guns blasting, you will not enjoy this film. But, if you can think back when you were a kid and how life was an adventure everyday, then you may just enjoy it.

The title may be misleading and you may be expecting more kaiju from the cover of the dvd, but you can not judge a book by its cover. Others may have different opinions and I would be interested in seeing how others review this film. Simply put, I liked it for what it is and what I never expected.

There is no dubbing, just Japanese audio and English subtitles. The dvd contained the film itself and several Japanese trailers.
Looked clear and crisp upscaled on HDTV.

The dvd arrived promptly in good condition. I truly loved this movie, which was very different from what anyone would expect from a product that overtly seems like an average kaiju movie. Of course, much of the enjoyment was due to the feature of the original spoken language with option of subtitles. For people who dislike kaiju movies, this would be a great way to introduce them to this genre. The writing and characterization was refreshingly intelligent, and this film really crossed genres rather than adhering to any particular classification. It will hold your suspense throughout, and you will care about the characters' fates as it sadly draws to a close. Don't expect anything usual about this very different, very wonderful movie.

To make this short and sweet - if you want to see a giant monster movie that has monster(s) throughout the film , you better just watch a Godzilla movie. This movie was the pits..absolutely the dullest "monster" movie Ive ever seen
The monster appears once for 5 minutes & if I say anything else about it that might spoil it..anyway youre not missing anything.
When the monster appears it is a GREAT creation but the rest of the movie is ho-hum fast forward. The story has to do with a man waiting for this monster to appear via a prophecy(think Nostradamus)
I didnt find anything interesting at all in this film other than the 5 minutes of monster...
Monster movies sure have gone way downhill since Godzilla has been shelved - & even the Millennium series wasn't as good as the older G films and this made me want to watch Kaiju films from the golden era of monster movies
I really cant recommend this unless you want 90 minutes of what I call 'people scenes' and this monster. Id love a action figure of the monster if nothing else...
Rent it if you're curious..avoid it if youve seen other negative reviews...
100% Blech !

I don't even know where to begin but here goes. First, how do you have a kaiju/monster movie that is set in the 70's when the monster is suppose to appear in 2019 and the film never leaves 1970? Next, the monster is NOT a sea monster, the monster is from space. The title should be "Space Monster Demeking". Next, the monster never appears in the film except for in a 5 minute dream sequence. I have a passion for Asian films set in small towns with good character development like in the film "Adrenaline Drive". But this film doesn't even have character development that anyone would care about. After over an hour of borefest, the film gives us an intense 5 minute monster mayhem dream sequence. After that, it goes right back to borefest. Some of these newer kaiju films like "Death Kappa" and "Monster X Strikes Back" are just parodies of kaiju films but at least "Big Man Japan" has some good monster battles. The only newer ones that I saw that are intense are "Long And Dark Haired Monster Geharha" aka "Gehara", "Negadon" and "Gamera: The Brave". "Gehara" is available on region A blu-ray with English subtitles. The film is very short with the director's cut being only about 21 minutes. But it is awesome. I mean AWESOME!!! Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock released "Negadon" on region 1 dvd a few years ago and they released "Gamera: The Brave" on dvd in 2008. We need Shusuke Kaneko (GMK, 90's Gamera Trilogy) to make kaiju films again. I am tired of these parodies of giant monster movies. I can't even classify "Demeking" aka "Demekingu". It isn't a parody, but it isn't a kaiju film either. The South Korean monster movies "The Host" and "Chaw" delivered the goods, as well as the UK film "Monsters" and of course "Cloverfield" and "The Mist". Even Roland Emmerich's "Godzilla" (1998) blows this away.Read more ›
