5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Vocals, shredding guitar
In Dementia is one of my favorite Heavy Metal albums. Kate French does an outstanding job of cutting to the bone with her power vocals and right to the point lyrics. Chastain's guitar work is a good as ever, melding some jazz-like leads wtih driving metal riffs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unusual heavy metal, January 10, 2011

Chastain is a heavy metal band that has consisted, in various incarnations, of guitarist David Chastain and a female vocalist, with different personnel on bass and drums. On this album, new vocalist Kate French replaced prior singer Leather Leone, although her rugged gravel-laden vocals are surprisingly similar to those of her predecessor. Kate also provided the lyrics, which are mainly about dysfunctional relationships. The guitar work is notable for its sheer originality. In this respect, Chastain has never sounded like other metal bands. David Chastain has a very distinctive style. He occasionally been likened to Yngwie Malmsteen for his technically proficient soloing, but his approach is quite dissimilar, using a combination of power chords and fluid harmonic runs (closer to Tony Iommi). The songwriting, however, is rather intermittent. The first three tracks are outstanding, as is the eight-minute closer, which has a very progressive feel. Unfortunately, the remaining material is only fair, and somewhat unmelodic.
