This smells more like the stem and leaves of the tomato plant, so it's an earthy yet refreshing scent. I always get questions and compliments about this spray. I love that it's not flowery or fruity. It's probably not something a super girly-girl would like, but for someone who doesn't like the usual scents, this is perfect.
First off, like all of Demeter's line, you have to understand that what you will smell is an interpretation, not strictly a pure odor of the real thing. For instance, another of their line (not included here) is "Sushi", which smells like light citrus with a touch of ginger and ocean. After all, real sushi shouldn't smell like fish, so what they were going for was something evocative of a sushi bar.
In addition, Demeter admits to sweetening many of the scents so it will make for a more perfume-like experience. Sometimes this works ("Dirt", also not included in this collection, became my significant other's favorite to wear) and sometimes it doesn't quite, at least for me.
As far as this collection goes, this is an excellent range of some pretty unusual scents. I'll list them individually.
Demeter carries four different leather-like scents, of which all are in this collection.
"Riding Crop" is a slightly sweetened, slightly spicy leather, perhaps with a touch of polish. If there is a farmyard note, I can't detect it. This is probably my favorite scent of all that I've tried.
"Saddle" is leather with a fairly heavy polish note. Again, if there is a farmyard scent, I can't make it out. As far as I'm concerned, they could have also named this one "New Boots."
"Russian Leather" is a mind-blower if you aren't careful. It is a very sweet, very powerful perfume; a little goes a long way.Read more ›
First, the bad: while paperback was a perfectly lovely scent, it had nothing to do with paperbacks. Smelled, actually, pretty exactly like cookie dough or cake batter. Raw flour, vanila, sugar, eggs- the works. It's lovely but absolutely nothing like the cedar-dust-sweet ink smell of a book. I did give it a bit of time, and rhe sweetness faded a bit, but still not enough to call it bookish.
Second, the really, really good: Holy Water is gorgeous. It took a bit to settle on, but when it did it smelled glorious on my skin and hair. Smelled like the best part of church as a kid, like beswax and incence. I think they did this one because they liked the smell but the Holy Smoke one had too much of a smoke overtone, so this might be HS without the smoke... Whatever, it's really, really nice.
Demeter caught my eye for their astounding selection of unique fragrances. I knew I wanted to get one, but was tied between the Jelly Belly Blueberry Muffin, Caramel, and Gingerbread. Being September and already feeling slightly festive for the autumn and following hollidays, I decided to go with the Gingerbread. Reviews from various sites left me apprehensive about the way it would turn out, some saying the smell wore off within five minutes, others saying that the fragrance was much too spicy and smelled almost like very cumin-y curry. As it turned out, none of those were true. The fragrance was the perfect combination of a cinnamon-y spiciness layered on an appropriate amount of sugary sweetness and an hour later, I'm still getting whiffs of it. I'm so glad this was my first Demeter fragrance as it has boosted my confidence in the line and I cannot WAIT to add more scents to my collection! Thank you, Demeter!
touch of damp-earth sweetness. It's a super scent in all the forms Demeter
offers it in: cologne, room spray, bath & body oil, hand & body cream,
candle ---- not too girlie, either. A great unisex scent!
You can't go wrong with this one.
It smells as if you are lying in a room filled with lilies and mahogany wood and old books.
I genuinely adore this fragrance and would recommend it to anyone. It's a strong fragrance, but it has a very long wearability and sophisticated smell. I am so pleased with this product.
