Demigod - Under Rated - Excellent Game - Bug Fixes are out and working great!!! Worth Buying!,
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Demigod Collector's Edition (DVD-ROM)
Demigod is a very underrated game because its not the typical first person shooter that the majority of game reviewers play. This is in my opinion, a Real Time Strategy game where instead of bases to upgrade and troops to deploy, you are upgrading your characters like a Role Playing Game would do. Similar to a Guild Wars or World of Warcraft skillset. This makes it very interesting to play. Tons of different strategies to learn. I've played 100 games already and still have not mastered the many different ways to play with different groups of characters. But here is a break down.
------------------------------------------------------------------------- GRAPHICS: PROS: Amazing Quality!!! This blows the graphics away from any other game I've played to date of this kind. They did a great job. The maps are interesting ideas with great detailed graphics, the game effects with hammer slams, firestorms, minions, bat swarms, giant axes, beast ooze, mine explosions, light towers, rook's towers, Regulus sniper shots, etc. It's just robust!! CONS: You need a good computer to play games that are 5v5 online especially on large maps. There is a SIM rating in the game that tells you what players have high or low sim scores. Sim scores tell you if their computer is fast or slow and causing the game to lag. If you're below a 4 sim score, you're getting to the point of slowing people down a little although the game adjust and regulates the speed. Once you get to a 1 or 0, the game becomes unplayable for the most part. A 25 second death turns into 33 second and the game will drag out. A 9800 GT card is under $100 now and will play the game just fine and give you an adequate SIM score to enjoy it. I for one have a 9800 GX2 and I have everything maxed out without any problems. Memory wise, you really only need about 1GB of free memory so that's good. Their recommended computer setup is pretty accurate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SOUND: There are no Cons to the sound! The audibles the Demigod's say can be funny at times and add to the experience. Music is AWESOME! Absolutely perfect for the game!! Sound effects for each character are precise and right in tune with how they should be. Very detailed! It's such a good mix of everything that you just feel at peace and into a great state of mind while playing that it's super fun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- GAMEPLAY: As a new player, stick to skirmish's till you get some skills down and then move to Multiplayer or you'll get your but kicked and players will get mad at you for causing them to lose. In a 3v3 game, 3 good players vs 2 good and 1 new guy, usually means the 3 good players kick your butt right away and will just kill the new guy over and over and over again, giving them tons of extra cash and well, sealing your teams fate. This is typically where RAGE quitters come in. People who know right at that the start that they are going to lose because one player or all their players are not up to their level of understanding of the game and tactics. So they will typically quit, move on to a new game and leave the AI to takeover their player. So more on the actual gameplay though. Maps are setup as 2D/3D maps. Meaning the graphics are in a 3D design but you only move 2 Dimensional on the map. It's like a board game. You can turn the map all directions but there aren't like hills and mountains you go up and down and look down or up to other players. This is fine though as the in game Scrolling works awesome and needs this setup to be successful. You can use your scroll mouse button to zoom out and then you point the mouse to where you'd like to zoom in to and use the scroll wheel to move in again and it auto adjusts. There is no need to move the mouse all the way to the right or left or top or bottom of your display to scroll. You can use their SmartZoom technology and it works well. You might also choose to use the keyboard buttons for scrolling as I do, as I also use the 1,2,3,4 buttons to activate my skills or spells as some call them. Makes it easier than clicking the mouse and its faster where in some cases, a half second is the difference between you being frozen and dying or the other playing being frozen and dying. Gameplay can get intense at time and require some thinking and strategy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCENARIO GAMEPLAY STRATEGY EXAMPLE: An example is this: Enemy Demigod is a beefed up Rook with lots of health. Your team has a Rook, Beast and Oak. Your teams Unclen Beast (UB) will walk up to the enemy Rook and spit his ooze that does lots of damage but over 10 second time frame. Soon as he spits, if the OAK sees him getting ready to pull a tower or do a hammer slam or something, he can stun him which stops his motion but causes the enemy Rook to have to wait for that option again. Enemy rook is now also 10-16% slower on moving and takes the same in additional damage. The Beast is now attacking him with melee, oak is melee dmg as well, all while the enemy Rook is taking ooze spit damage. So you can see he's taking serious dmg already. Plus he lost his hammer slam or tower skill for 10 secs. Too late now, enemy rook is about to be dead without his teammates help and with this combo, it takes about 7-8 secs, if that! TEAM ATTACK COMBO: Unclean Beast does his Spit on the Rook. As the rook on your team sees this, he is ready to hammer slam the enemy rook. Team's UB does a Claw Grasp on enemy rook, stealing health and freezing the enemy Rook for 2 seconds, which is how long it takes to do a devastating 'Hammer Slam' by your teammate Rook. You now just did about 2500-3000 dmg in about 2 secs, or took away 1/2 to 3/4 of the ROOK's health. The Oak can then do a spell that Freezes him for a second, and causes him to take 400 dmg, plus reduces his speed an additional 15%. The enemy rook is near dead now and is so slow he can't get away even if he tries. Your melee attacks combined are likely doing around 600+ dmg per second. Before the enemy rook gets a chance to even turn around or try to cast a skill/spell, your Team Rook toss a boulder at him, stunning him again for 2 secs and doing about 300 damage. While he's been taking damage from the initial UB ooze spit and all your team skills are almost back to being able to use again, and he hasn't moved but maybe 2 steps, the enemy Rook is likely dead now. This is might sound elaborate but it's not. You're only responsible for literally clicking 2 times regardless of who you are. I'm telling you, this is a tactic we use in the games we choose these characters with my friends and I know the player on the other side is saying, "HELP HELP HELP!!! I'm gonna die". It's great and exciting! This is because with DG characters that can freeze you, you've just made a decision to engage whether you like it or not. So be careful how far out you go or you might be coming back as a corpse. In cases like this, you need a Torch Bearer (TB), Healer, Queen to protect you. TB can cast an Ice Storm that freezes all the enemy DG's for 1 sec. and well, it's good if your Rook has some speed to get away, like the +25% Boost store item. Cause anything less, and he's done and the other team rakes in about 2000 gold, which means they just went to upgrade their gear to do it all again, only with more damage and faster death to the enemy DG. The funny part about all of it, is this is can cause a scenario where you hear, "Double Smited!" and then maybe "GODLIKE!". Because if only one of your team mates comes to the rescue against 3 DG's and you just die. Guess what, that exact same fate and combo is about to happen again because all those skills are recharged and ready to go and well, "Execute Plan Alpha!" and in 8 more seconds you just might here, "SMITED!". If your teammate isn't smart enough to run away and regroup to make a better stance. I highly recommend not trying to take on 3 DG's if you're solo, and even 2 is pushing it greatly. You will likely die and the whoever kills most, typically becomes a monster in the game rather quickly. Unless you're sitting with a L20 character with beefed up armor upgrades and they are all L12, I wouldn't recommend it. If you find you're in a game and your team response is slow, you might invest in an item that makes you invincible for 5 seconds. But it also makes you immobile. It's more to give your players a chance to get to you, so you don't die and well it also makes the enemy team waste their most damaging skills on you, unless they are smart and noticed you used the item to save yourself. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- THE INTERFACE: Very similar to most Role Playing Games, I'd compare it more to Guild Wars as it does not have 20 options like WoW does, it has about 10 and looks very similar to the setup of Guild Wars. You're allowed 4 Skills, 3 Items and one Favor Item if its allowed in the game. Then you can click your little DG picture in the middle to zoom immediately to your character or there are 2 little buttons to click for Skill Tree and your Character Stats. Just as with other games, you move the mouse over the DG you want to attack or the location you want to move and click. Very straight forward. The RTS comes in play with how to work together with your teammates and use your skills together. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMUNICATION: This is something I'm not happy with in the game as it really needs in game voice chat, but this is not an option yet. For now, I recommend you try to get everyone to fire up a Steam Voice Chat, Ventrilo, or TeamSpeak server to chat and have different rooms for different games going on. Typing in game just doesn't work for anyone as its too slow. I've been using Steam Voice Chat now with my friends when we play and its a lot easier to quickly hit the SHIFT key for click to talk and say "Snipe UB Left Side quick!!" or "Warp to me quick, about to die". Then you just use the P key to make a blip on the map for your player to easily see and then "Varoop a ray of light flashes across the screen and the enemy demi has just been killed with a Regulus Sniper shot". If you had to stop and type in, Snipe left side, that extra 1-2 seconds is the difference of that enemy DG being in the Fog of War and not able to be clicked on to snipe. Sucks. Impulse chat sucks.... It is no where near as good as you get with Steam right now but they are aware of that and I've received word that now that they've fixed the Demigod multiplayer connection issues, their team is now focusing on Impulse some more to give the users what they want. DEVELOPMENT TEAM: I am very very pleased with Stardock and Gas Powered Games. It has been a long time since I've seen this dedicated of a team working on a game to insure its success. Most games come out, they don't care about their fans and if the game is crap at release or has bugs, they have a poor mentality of "we'll fix when we fix it". This is not the case with GPG or Stardock. They recognized the issue with multiplayer and immediately said, 'We're putting everyone on this to fix it as quickly as possible" and they are always posting in the game forums. It's nice to be able to speak with the developers and them actually listen to posts and respond back. They have kept to their word and this game has only gotten better and better since release. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PERSONAL REVIEW NOTE: This game is definitely worth buying! I own roughly 65 games for the PC and some 40 for XBOX360. I've been actually playing games for 20 years and have a logged 1910 hours playing Medal of Honor Allied Assault, 650 hours logged playing Guild Wars and while playing "A Tale in the Desert" with 3 accounts at the same time, logged roughly 18380 hours of game time over 5 years. I know games, I know what's fun, what is not, and what games are worth playing. I don't play games unless there is something to get out of them. Games like Civilization are actually very educational while being fun and causing you to use your head a little. Games like Unreal Tournament really do nothing for you, except consume your time and keep you from not being as bored as you otherwise might be. Games like "A Tale in the Desert" are community games that basically are a second life where you work as a community and build things together, taking on tasks, chores, and well it's rewarding goals are based on past truths of the egyptian lifestyles with some added fiction gameplay to make things more interesting. So I've played a ton of games! I can tell you all my friends were borderline buying it because of poor GameSpot reviews and stuff and when I let them play my copy they immediately said, "GameSpot is a bunch of idiots. This game is awesome!". A Demo will be out soon and you can try it out. You won't be sorry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here is a list of some of the titles I've played for comparison: 15% SIMULATION GAMES (SIM): like Sim City, SIMS, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Railroads, Nascar Thunder, Civilization( I consider this sim) etc. 55% REAL-TIME STRATEGY (RTS) GAMES: Command and Conquer(all of them), World At War, Act of War, Sudden Strike, KKND, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Warcraft 3, etc. 30% First Person Shooter (FPS) COD1,2,3,4, MOH:AA, MOH:PA, MOH:Airborne, Unreal Tourn. 1,2,3, Quake. There are some random games in there as well that I've played over time but these are the major titles some of you would likely recognize. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUMMARY: I can tell you right now that when I come home from work the first thing I want to play after all my routine chores, is DEMIGOD! It's unique, it's fun and even when you're getting your butt kicked, you know you can play another game right after it and maybe kick butt in that game and redeem the glory. It's a fresh new idea in how an RTS can be carried out. With this in mind, if you hate RTS style games, or games that you need to think while playing and use some strategy, or even to be reliant on other team mates, I'm not sure you'll like the game from your personal view. But the game as a creation for the audience it is addressed to, is awesome. Rating wise this game is easily a 9 or 10 stars out of 10 and as I rated it for Amazon, 5 stars. Gamespot and some other reviewers game this game a poor review at release because of multiplayer gaming issues which are resolved. If you read the player reviews, everyone is saying 9 and 10 minus the few people who had whatever issues they had and hastly give it a crappy review for no good reason. But the average user reviews are typically around a 9. Just as with anything else in this world now, when you read reviews, read the player/customer reviews. They are the accurate ones who actually care about the product they paid money for and whether or not they feel its worth the money. They also aren't paid off by advertising and other critics and bad business ethics to give false, inaccurate or just plain horrible reviews because they personally just don't like it. You also have to read in between the lines with reviews. If you're reading a review on a product that is manufactured for instance like a vacuum or a car, there is always that potential to get a lemon. Does it mean the product is horrible as that person is likely to review it? Probably not or they wouldn't have wasted millions of dollars on it. Always read between the lines and take into account the good reviews before the bad reviews. This is because an angry person is always going to post before a happy person will unless they are super happy or actually care that someone else knows something works good or not. Reviewer's like Gamespot are full of haste and poor judgement due to their spontaneous nature to draw quick conclusions. If everyone were that way, there would be a lot of fired people in this world, even less good marriages and well, I think no one would have kids because well, this person had a child that was horrible from day one, etc. This game is worth every penny you will spend on it! And if you know someone that owns it already, ask them to check with Stardock 'Twitter' or Forums and they could likely get you 20% off! ENJOY DEMIGOD!! It's awesome now and is only getting better! Can't wait for expansions already with more maps and DEMIGOD'S! Going to be a blast! Multiplayer issues are fixed and working great!

I got this game because I'm a huge fan of DotA, a modification for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. They share similar concepts in many ways, but are also different in many ways.
This game is, first of all, slower-paced than DotA. Veterans of that game may find this unappealing, and that's understandable. There is a limited number of demigods to choose from, and some people are having framerate issues involving the sound in the game. Despite all this, the game manages to be incredibly fun. It's a blast to play online and the publisher, Stardock, is continually working to improve the game. Collector's edition extras: The poster is an extremely large and glossy piece of art featuring the rook taking on an army of "creeps", or the small units in the game. The figurine is made of durable, heavy pewter but is rather small. The soundtrack is fantastic. Overall, despite the flaws, this game is recommendable.

A very fun game that didn't receive the attention it deserved. If you like DOTA then you will like this game, it is based on the same gameplay but with much better graphics.

First, before buying, check the price at ImpulseDriven.comNow, for the review. I love this game. More thought was put into the programming of this game than many others I've seen. I love-love-love the single player (I personally rock the Unclean Beast). The community is sparse but stuff gets done, just don't expect a huge list of servers. This is a GREAT game to play with friends at LAN parties. It's like League of Legends, with less characters and more thought put into each one. I first got a demo copy at a lan party, and within a few months, I bought the game. I love it.

This game is great once we were able to start it. It took a long time because the code was not valid, supposedly used by someone else. The company said this happens a lot, not usually the sellers fault.

I was excited about this game but I don't think it's worth the cost. Game play is repetitive and a snooze after the first hour. I loved games like Age of Empires and the like, and was hoping this one was similar. The graphics are a struggle to see at any size, and the game just doesn't seem very inspired. I good idea that didn't make it far enough.

Yay! It's a game I can't play.
As tclamb states in his review this is a good game. I like the play style and it looks like it would be quite fun if I could actually play it multiplayer. Especially since multiplayer is how the game is intended to be played in the first place. Amazon did a good job of making the game packaging appear new. It would be nicer if the game inside was actually new. The only thing worse than Amazon selling me a "New" game that Stardock tells me is already registered to another person is Stardocks deplorable support system. Their response time per e-mail is At Least three business days. In between two of our messages my ticket was automatically closed as they expect a response from you in 48 hours. I guess they just couldn't wait for me to check my social e-mail on my weekend to send them the images they requested. I did as directed by the e-mail notifying me that my ticket was closed and replied to have the ticket reopened. That did not work so well since the automated system responded almost immediately that it was closed again. So I decided that maybe e-mail support was not the way to go and I would call them. The support number on their contact page is 1-888-STARDOCK. Stardock just happens to be eight characters long. They should have just made it 1-888-FARKYOU. At least that is seven characters long and could be turned into an actual seven digit phone number. I actually tried to call the eight digit phone number and had the expected results from that attempt. I buy way too much stuff from Amazon.com to not continue doing business with them. But I will no longer buy items from them directly with the idea that would be preferable to finding it on their list of third party vendors as I have in the past. As for Stardock ... blowing off my support ticket with no response shows me how they feel about their customers. Since the last game they sell worth playing was Sins it will be too easy for me to no longer do business with them at all and I would recommend that you folks do the same.

I usually order from amazon themselves even though I usually going to get a quality product that works. Probably not going to do that anymore. Like I said in the title, the game looks, sounds, and plays great but I can't get multiplayer. Why you ask? Well, in order to play online, you need to update. Since I have run into this type of thing before, I didn't have a problem with this. What I did have a problem with is that I was sent an incorrect code that doesn't work with Impulse (which is the only way to update). Because of this, I can't play online multiplayer. Thank you amazon. I would have rated the game 5 stars without hesitation had my code worked.
