About the Author

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French political thinker and historian best known for his Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution. In both of these works, he explored the effects of the rising equality of social conditions on the individual and the state in western societies. He also coauthored The U.S. Penitentiary System and Its Application in France with Gustave de Beaumont and penned Recollections, which was published after his death. John Pruden is a professional voice actor who, through his own voice-over company, Voice Acting With Character, records audiobooks, corporate and online training narrations, animation and video game characters, and radio and TV commercials. His exposure to many people, places, and experiences throughout his life---from his many jobs while a young man; to his Army service as a UH-60 Black Hawk assault helicopter pilot; to his travels through forty-four U.S. states, South America, Europe, and Asia; to his experience in professional improv and singing---provides a solid creative foundation from which to draw for his intelligent audiobook narration and talented vocal characterizations. His audiobooks include Race for the Dying by Steven Havill, Telling the Truth by D. A. Carson, and On Night's Shore and Disquiet Heart, both from the Poe series by Randall Silvis.

This is excellent for a free edition, but is abridged. Anyone who wants to get the essence of the work should buy this edition, but for the complete work, try other editions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Democracy in America November 8, 2010

My fiance is taking an advanced level government course and it was one of her required readings. I decided to expand my horizons and read along with her. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to know history of our government and how we were perceived historically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Re-read from College Days September 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Democracy in America is very insightful, precise, and full of information concerning the operation of a new democracy in America. Those interested in genealogy also, like me, will be encouraged by the style de Tocqueville uses in describing the everyday living style of the colonists during 1835 - 1840s. Besides the thorough descriptions of American life, this book gives one an understanding of French comparisons, interests, and concerns. (My ancestors are from France.)

Another good read, along with this book, is The Federalist Papers to get the flavor of problems the citizens were wrestling with during the early 19th Century.Democracy in America (Penguin Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars READ IT! April 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tocqueville came to America to expose himself to something new, a representative democracy. The words he penned while he toured the world is both epic and everlasting. Many people overlook this author because they assume it will be heavy and outdated, but they would be wrong. Here is a person who saw something fabulous and terrifying in how we ran our country. Concepts such as the American Dream seemed to go against everything European scholars spoke up, yet it works. Take a chance and enjoy a little Tocqueville!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Democracy in America - Volume 1 December 27, 2012
By Si Post
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have this in my bookcase but wanted access on my Kindle. Kindle i especially helpful if one wishes to source a phrase or subject matter by an author quickly.

Unfortunately, we've come to the place in America that Tocqueville feared we might. The America I knew no longer exists and I do not believe it will ever be recovered. Those who've destroyed us from within will write the history that will cover their handprints on the matter.

3.0 out of 5 stars No ToC! October 4, 2011
By Jen
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There's no table of contents in this edition which is very frustrating for a work this long. Hopefully the editors can make changes and include an update with a ToC

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition has no links March 3, 2009
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Kindle edition has NO hyperlinks in the document. It gets better.

When you search on the word "chapter," none of the chapter beginnings are found, supposedly because the chapter heading is an IMAGE, not text.

I'll try other editions, and if needed, a download from Mobi, and report back on whether I can find a version of this book that can be used with a linked Table of Contents.
