I mainly wanted to write this review to balance the other review here with one star. I read this book a long time ago and and will not re-read it just in order to give a review. I can say though that I very much enjoyed this book and found the discussion of the nature and compatibility of capitalism and democracy very interesting. I was very glad that I bought the book. I can't say much more than that at this point, but feel strongly this is a good book and worth a read for people interested in this subject. I might give it five stars, but my memory of exactly what was in the book is not clear anymore.

I would NOT recommend reading this book. Its not a very clear book at all. The authors focus on trying to sound like intellectual elites instead of focusing on making a point about their book. Half the time you are trying to figure out what the heck they are trying to say and when you finally do, you figure out that was common knowledge. It's a very difficult read for anyone that is less than fanatical for this type of subject.I'm sure that the two authors, Bowles and Gintis, are very intelligent and distinguished political scientists but this book is not by any means, a award winner. Yikes! |
