Oh Come On, Lighten Up,
By sunny "sunseeker" (Las Vegas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
The other reviewers took this little book way too seriously. Since I suffer from "Bush Derangement Syndrome", I thought it was very funny. It's just a joke, which I loved sending to my adult childeren. I do agree with the reviewers who stated that it is not for children. It's for adults like me who are appalled with the way the country is being run.

yet another excuse for me to remain a registered independent,

This book is ridiculous. Democrats are no more "moral" than Republicans are. Anyone who tries to use the word "moral" in the context of a political party is a fool. This book oversimplifies the problems our country is facing today much like "Help Mom There Are Liberals Under My Bed!" does. While Katherine DeBrecht's right-wing hogwash is essentially a more polite form of Ann Coulter-esque outrage, this book is class warfare and militant political correctness repackaged for grade schoolers (it will change the way they think about squirrels, at least).

Honestly,
By PuffNStuff "charkieking" (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
These other reviewers are so concerned about "indoctrinating" - it's no worse than "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!", which is the Republican equivalent - but read the reviews for it - no one's concerned for the children in any of those reviews. There's nothing wrong with the book - if these people had read it, it just talks about good moral values - and equates them with the Democrats. If good morals, Republican or Democrat, is "indoctrinating" children, then perhaps that's the problem with today's youth.
My guess is that the reviewers just heard Rush Limbaugh bad mouth the book and they rushed to Amazon to review it.

The indoctrination is not the good moral values...,

This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
One reviewer wrote that "if good moral values is indoctrination...". This reviewer missed something. Frankly, some of the books good moral values are not so good. Or Moral. And yes, it is indoctrination. "Democrats make sure they share their toys, just like mommy does". Clearly a subtle remark about wealth redistribution. Also, the comments from another reviewer were right on about no father figure in the book. Clearly, Democrats don't believe a father is required. Even the author himself has a "Partner", instead of a wife. Hey, here's a novel idea: How about NO books about politics for our kids. How about letting them just be kids.

Worrisome,
By Grumpy (El Monte, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
This book is political propaganda aimed at children. It makes blanket statements that imply ALL Democrats have the same righteous views, while diplaying pictures with subtile imlications that Republicans (elephant) are the bad guy. The Democrat party and the Republican party are neither that admirable, nor are they completely villainous.
One sided political books like this and the conservative book "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!" by Katharine DeBrecht and Jim Hummel should be kept away from children. Teach them right and wrong without political spin. That way when they grow up they can see things with out a jaded view and can support whomever is doing good, regardless of political affiliation. Liberals don't have all the right answers, nor do conservatives. To teach a child that one side or the other does, is pure propganda.

I tried to get my kids to read this but they were not interested. Nor was I. It is like the NY Times for kids.

Democrats, and everyone else, should stay away.,
This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
This book is blatantly doctrinaire. It attempts to hammer one-sided political values into children's heads while teaching them that anyone who disagrees is evil and scary. No matter what your political leanings are, it's irresponsible to show this book to your children.

Ghastly and Creepy,
By Rosamond1 (Tidewater, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
If I didn't know better, I would think this scary "children's" book was an elaborate satiric ruse a la the old National Lampoon magazine. What drug are these folks on? Democrats are all things bright and beautiful and non-democrats are the trolls under the bridge? Only democrats want to save the environment, help others, possess civic pride as well as every other virtue? The cloying Hallmark Card illustrations add to the surreal effect. Save the children!

Why Mommy is a Democrat,
This review is from: Why Mommy is a Democrat (Paperback)
Should I be surprised that the reviews for this book are either one extreme or the other? It looks like these reviews are made along party lines, not unlike a lot of voting these days. Ok, I'll jump on the wagon, too, and give it a full five stars not only because I'm a staunch Democrat but also because like some other reviewers I think the book sets a lot of positive moral examples that ring true to my heart. Anything less than a 5-star review would come from a personal that lacks all sense of morality and ethics.

Yes, this really is meant for children,
By kywrite "kywrite" (Groton, CT, USA) - See all my reviews

I keep reading people who pooh-pooh this book and say it's meant for adults. Try again. Almost every testimonial on the home page of the book references reading it to children or buying it for your children -- and this is from political and media figures. http://littledemocrats.net/
Also, from the author's bio on the same website: "After hearing for years that I should consider writing children's books, I finally decided to give it a try. But I didn't want to write a typical children's story; instead, I set out to write a book that would help parents communicate important political values to their children and offer an underlying theme of political satire for adults." Yes, this kind of thing scares me, especially when I try to raise my children to have respect for everyone. Think about what's being implied when you read books like this ("If Democrats believe X, then Republicans believe the opposite"), and you'll be even more scared. |
