Focusing on the tension between elite and popular models, individuals who made a difference, and recent events, THE DEMOCRATIC DEBATE makes American democracy both relevant and compelling.

Great Textbook,

I used this text in my Intro to American Politics class last summer and ended up getting a lot more out of than we studied in class. We switched around chapters and left some out, so I recently reread it straight through (I'm a definite nerd). I had a great professor, which gave me an excellent grounding, but the textbook itself is engaging and gives a fair comprehensive explanation of American politics and government within their framework of "popular vs elite democracy". As a student, I feel like I got a lot out of it. I assume my professor likes it, because he's been using it for several editions, I think.
Fair warning though, Miroff and Company's biases are really easy to determine. If you're looking for a more objective textbook for your class, I'd consider looking elsewhere-- but my professor was an excellent devil's advocate and he balanced them out by pointing out their bias. Any fair prof can do the same, I imagine. If you're a student, then just read the text critically instead of mindlessly and you should be alright.

Very Bias, In fact, it says so in the beginning,

It's frustrating that I can't even take a class without someone shoving their politics down my throat. In this case, the writers of the book state plainly in the opening lines their preference for a European style 'Popular' (insert Progressive) Democracy instead of a Democratic Republic. The book only uses the aspects of history that support it's opening statement and completely ignore any instances or arguments (such as the Federalist Papers) on why that type of system wasn't implemented in America. The teacher that used this book spoke glowingly of Marx and poorly of the Founding Fathers, to let you know what kind of teacher uses this particular book. My suggestion, drop any class that uses this book and look for a teacher that that uses less bias material.

I rented this book through the kindle store, and I LOVE it! I use the book for my political science class, and I wish all college books were this easily accessible. Not only do I not have to lug around ANOTHER book in my backpack, but I rented it for half of what a used copy would have been at the bookstore. I use amazon to get All my textbooks for college, but the teacher didn't tell us what book we would be needing until the first day, and typically shipping books takes about a week to 2 weeks. (I don't like paying extreme prices for extreme shipping.) Getting the book this way saves me money, and I get it instantly!
