Editorial Reviews

Review

"Democratic Souvenirs" is an attractive, much needed additional to the literature of American Music. Being both scholarly and accessible, it meets the diverse demands of the researcher, the performer, and the general public....[It] should be placed in every music collection in the United States as well as in libraries in other parts of the world, so that [American] music may properly be recognzied and approached for the culture it represent." ---NOTES (official publication of the American Music Library Association) "...A book for amateur pianists and singers as well as for music educators and professional musicians. Democtratic Souvenirs" makes for good reading. Mr. Jackson argues his case for 19th-century American music in a lively style that proves that writing can be scholarly without being pedantic."
