3.0 out of 5 stars Original plot but characters are predictable
The Demon in Me has a very original plot, but I find the characters were not very complex or deep. Eden Riley is a [sceptic] psychic who is convinced to help find a killer in a police investigation. She has an urge to open one of the doors in the serial killer's house, to find him waiting with a knife, and the killer admits to having a demon inside of him. Ben, the cop,...

This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
Eden Riley is a skeptical psychic. After helping the Chief of Police's wife find her missing dog she was pressured into taking a job as a psychic consultant for the police. No one is more miserable about this arrangement than Eden. She freely admits that she doesn't believe she's psychic. She gets hunches that pan out, but she can't make herself have psychic visions. That means she's not psychic, right? Unfortunately for Eden, on her first consultant job she gets a hunch about where a serial killer is and ends up with more than she bargained for. All of a sudden she's hearing a man's voice in her head and she just doesn't know what's going on.

Darrak is a demon who has to jump from host to host to survive. Unfortunately for Eden, that serial killer was his last host and when Detective Ben killed him Darrak was forced to jump to another body. Guess who that turned out to be? Yes, Darrak and Eden now inhabit the same body. This is something new for both of them as Eden has never had a demon in her (obviously) and Darrak has never jumped to a female before.

Watching Darrak and Eden navigate the boundaries of their new life was fun. The author actually addresses subjects that the common reader would ask. What happens when Eden needs to go to the bathroom? What happens if she wants to get physical with someone? They have very funny exchanges throughout the book and the momentum never stops.

I really liked that Eden didn't trust Darrak right away. I think it was very realistic for her to try to take the measures that she did. She unwittingly started an undesirable chain of events, but how was she supposed to know? She was looking out for number one. I also really liked the facts that we found out about Darrak. I liked that he tried to present himself in the best possible light and that Eden had to figure out if she was okay with the reality of who he was once she found out more about him.

All in all a fun new series that I would definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possessed by The Demon In Me!, May 4, 2010
This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
Or should I say obsessed, mesmerized, entranced...any and all of those adjectives apply!

I've been a big fan of Michelle's work since her first book, Bitten & Smitten. Since I loved the Immortality Bites series, color me a bit skeptical that she could write a hero I liked as much (or even a wee bit more) as IB's Thierry de Bennicoeur. I was wrong. Darrak, the demon who does the possessing (and the occasional ass kicking and/or romancing, as the situation warrants) in The Demon In Me is my favorite Rowen hero yet. Even though he has his angst - hello, demon - he has a sense of humor about the situation he and Eden find themselves in. He doesn't take himself too seriously and he's also pretty direct about who and what he is, though he dispenses the truth in manageable doses for the confused human who ends up being his earthly vessel.

Eden's..refreshing, for a lack of a better word. Smart and self-aware, she's a character I loved spending time with. I very much related to what she was going through, as impossible as that sounds. You can't help but root for her to somehow find her improbable happy ending with the demon who has possessed her. But all's not as it seems with Eden, and I can't wait to find out more about her backstory in the next book.

The scenes between Eden and Darrak sizzle, but I also laughed out loud - at work, no less - several times. Rowen writes great romantic comedy, but the subject matter definitely isn't all sunshine and roses. This is paranormal romance at its finest and the action is non-stop. Don't expect to have time to sleep or eat once you start this book, because I sure didn't. I sucked the story down so fast that October and Something Wicked seem VERY far away. A truly excellent start to what I know will be a fantastic series!

LOVED this book. A 4.5 Stars. This is a new author find for me. I've since downloaded several of her books. Have loved every one of them. The Demon in Me is hot, sexy, incredibly witty and funny. Eden is a psychic working as a consultant for the police. As a result of the murder of his host, Darrack is a demon forced to possess Eden by night but has control over his body by day...just as long as he stays within 90 feet of Eden. Darrack is hilarious and he and Eden are a fabulous couple. Eden is intelligent, brave and sharp. The paranormal world explodes for her once Darrack comes along. This is a great series, fast paced, nonstop action, with wacky side characters... just a fun sexy read. They're on a mission to find a way for Darrack to be able to exist outside of Eden's body. The sequel Something Wicked is just as good and leaves you wanting more. Anxiously waiting on That Old Black Magic in September.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great series from a great author!, January 27, 2011
This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
After falling in love with the author's other books, I was excited to start another series by her. Michelle Rowen always has the ability to create a new world with witty humor, fun characters and all at a great pace to keep me interested from beginning to end. With this series, we meet Eden Riley. Eden has a small touch of psychic in her that she has been using to help the police in unsolved cases. In her first case with the police, she failed them. Now as she tries again with the next case, she find herself working with a skeptical detective named Ben who happens to be a "Ken Doll" looking model. To say she has a crush on him is putting it mildly. When they enter a serial killers home to uncover clues, Eden finds herself face to face with the killer. After Ben shoots the killer, Eden is overcome with black smoke that only she can see and quickly finds out that it was a cursed Demon that has now taken up residence in her body.

Eden is the only one that can hear Darrak since he is literally living inside her body. After centuries of not being able to communicate with his hosts, Darrak is excited to finally have someone who can help him break a Black Witches curse that condemned this archdemon to his current predicament. Since Eden is part psychic, Darrak can also take human form outside of her body during the daylight hours.

The author did not disappoint with the fun and witty dialogue with this series. Darrak was sexy, funny and oh so bad but in a good way. You couldn't help but feel the same way Eden does toward the demon. She goes through shock, disbelief and eventually trust and love with the demon.

With a fun plot, sexy demon and a psychic who is as skeptical as a non believer can be, this book will take you on a roller coaster of laughter, suspense and all out fun. Darrak is a demon who could posses me anytime and take up permanent residence in my body! A well done beginning novel to a series that is sure to be a hit and one I look forward to reading the rest of!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Demon in Me by Michelle Rowen, December 5, 2010
This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
Eden Riley's life has just become infinitely more complicated.

After a serial killer is killed right before her eyes, Eden realizes that she is no longer completely alone in her head. She's now possessed by a demon. Because of her psychic abilities, Darrak is able to communicate with her telepathically. He is even able to get his body back during the day - for the first time in three hundred years.

However, Eden has a bigger problem. If she doesn't help Darrak break the curse that destroyed his body, she'll die within the year.

The Demon in Me is fantastically written. I had only read her two young adult novels (Reign or Shine and Reign Check) before cracking open this book, but I think she shines as both a young adult and an adult novelist. Eden's world is filled with psychics, witches, demons, shapeshifters... and one very determined exorcist. Action and witty banter follow Eden's attempts to rid herself of her demonic companion, all the while trying to keep her life together.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Demon in Me, October 22, 2010

This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
Eden Riley is a little bit psychic, and is currently working as a consultant for the police. When she meets with a police detective to assist in finding a serial killer, she doesn't really think she'll be able to help. She certainly doesn't think that when the detective guns down the killer the demon that was possessing him will be forced to enter her body.

Darrak the demon insists that he's a good demon who was cursed by a witch 300 years ago. He's never been able to speak with his host before, and now with Eden he can even take form in his human body during the day. He's hoping, with her help, that he can break the curse. But can Eden really trust a demon?

This is an original and refreshing new twist on paranormal romance. It's fun, quirky and laugh out loud funny. I really liked Eden, she's independent, sassy and just a little bit vulnerable. She's torn between exorcising the demon and lusting after him, and this leads to some interesting banter between the two.

There's non-stop action throughout, and I couldn't put this book down. Eden has a budding romance with hunky police detective Ben, but Darrak isn't so thrilled about that which leads to some hilarious encounters. There's also a couple of exorcists who refuse to take no for an answer, along with a man-hating witch who writes self-help books for women. This all wraps up into a great read and I can't wait to see where the story line goes in future books!

3.0 out of 5 stars Original plot but characters are predictable, August 5, 2010

This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ben, the cop, shoots the killer, and a black cloud, which only Eden can see, rises from the dead man. Eden soon finds out the demon, Darrak, can talk to her, and he claims is is not evil and that none of his "hosts" have been able to fully hear him for three centuries. Because Eden is a psychic, Darrak is able to pull from her energy and take human form during daylight hours; however, Darrak must stay close to Eden because he will otherwise lose form. They proceed to find the black magic witch who cursed Darrak three centuries ago so that the curse can be lifted. Ben, the cop, ends up playing a role in the book as Eden's boyfriend, but in the end Eden asks him to leave because she can't juggle the Demon inside her and Ben at the time. It doesn't help that Darrak is jealous of Ben. The story has an original plot, and I enjoyed the concept, yet the only characters in the book that had any real depth were Malcolm, an exorcist that is trying to help get rid of the demon, and Ben. Ben will not doubt play a big role in the next Living In Eden novel, because he truly cares for Eden, but it was disappointing that Eden and Darrak were so simple and predictable as main characters. The intimate scene was extremely disappointing too. Very, very bland, and I was left with an empty feeling.

4.0 out of 5 stars In Love, July 18, 2010

I absolutely love this book...the heroine was refreshing...sincere, and witty, in a slightly self-deprecating manner that still engages you and just makes you laugh. I wasn't put off by her personality like I am so often with heroines out there now...you know the ones...the one who are supposedly strong and kick ass but who turn out to be whiners who can't help but crumble and fall apart when they're in bad situations. I think this heroine handled her situation well and she handled it with wit and grace and the demon was written better than I thought he would be. I thought he was hot and funny.

So with my imaginary pom-poms I say !GO Michelle Rowen!!!!.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - Now here's a leading man who is truly 'possessive', May 23, 2010
This review is from: The Demon in Me (A Living in Eden Novel) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Demon in Me kicks off a new series which is not quite paranormal romance and yet not quite urban fantasy either. Leading lady Eden, is a psychic who is skeptical about her abilities - she thinks she's just a bit intuitive since her powers are somewhat erratic. On Eden's first job as a police consultant, her powers work just fine, but as an unfortunate consequence of her first success, Eden ends up posessed by a demon. The demon was cursed by a witch 300 years ago and has been disembodied ever since, moving from host to host, but rarely able to communicate with them. However, something about Eden's powers makes it possible for him to not only speak to her mind to mind while resident in her body, but also to take an extremely appealing corporeal form during the daylight hours as long as he stays in close proximity to Eden.

Now that the demon can actually communicate with a host, he can finally get help hunting down the witch who cursed him and make the witch break the spell. As nice and undemonlike and hot as Eden's new 'guest' seems, Eden keeps reminding herself that demons are tricky, lying and seductive but still the demon has managed to motivate Eden to take up his cause and to help him find a way to end his curse. The motivation - other than the fact he's ruining Eden's chances with the hunky policeman she's been crushing on? The demon's hosts all die a year after he has taken up residence.

The demon was likable enough, if a bit possessive(pun intended) and his presence - despite the impending death part - actually changes Eden's life for the better and Eden was fine too. The story was cute and light but when I read the book I was expecting more of a romance and with the conflict between the demon and Eden over Eden's pursuit of the handsome cop, I wasn't sure whether to root for the beautiful blond human or the attractive demon. I actually liked the Demon in Me better after thinking on my reactions to the book when taken as more of a sexy urban fantasy. And since this wasn't an end-to-end romance, a less direct route to a HEA, along with a certain amount of world building can be justified and the ending with Eden's transition, plus the addition of angels to the mix, offers some promise as the series continues in Something Wickedout October 2010.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Demon in Me, January 11, 2012
By
Lara Croft (Wellington, NZ) - See all my reviews
This was a fun and easy read, with a good sense of romantic tension running through it. Eden has always been slightly psychic, little flashes of mostly useless information that is only normally good for finding lost keys or dogs. Finding a dog earns her a recommendation to assist the police force in finding a serial killer - and leads her straight to where he's hiding. At this point, the demon currently using the killer's body for a host, leaps to Eden's body instead. His name is Darrak and for the past 300 years he's been body-hopping, while he tries to find a way to break the curse laid upon him.

Eden is having enough problems without this. Her attraction to hunky police officer Ben is scuttled, a bunch of super-religious exorcists are chasing her - and she finds herself strangely attracted to Darrak. Due to her high psychic abilities he is able to draw on her power and take human form during daylight hours - as long as he stays close to her. Moving any distance away causes them both incredible pain. Finding the delicious Darrak in her bed every morning, takes some getting used to.

And even when they finally locate the witch that placed the curse - and have a chance to break it - it's still not as clear-cut as Eden would have thought. Will she take the chance to get rid of Darrak? Or does she like living with a demon? For my taste, it could have been a bit more sexy, but the storyline gripped me and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel. 4/5
