A preeminent augmentation to the Demonata series that kept me captivated through the entire read,
By Teenreads.com (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Demonata #10: Hell's Heroes (Hardcover)
Under Death's guidance, the demons have banded together and launched an assault on Earth. Their reward if they triumph will be the obliteration of mankind, control of our universe, and immortality.
Since we last saw Grubbs Grady, things have not gotten better. The demons have found openings to the world. Lord Loss is in his glory. Grubbs is exhausted and heartbroken over the trail of blood, brutality and loss that crowds the world around him. He is desperate to stay on task, to do everything possible to defend what is left. He can hardly remember being a boy because his wolf side has had to take over just to survive: "I'm not in close touch with my human emotions these days. I've become a detached, brutal excuse for a person." He is numb, scared and angrier than he's ever been. He has lost his parents, his half-brother, Bill-E, Meera, Beranabus and a host of others. Now his Uncle Dervish lies dying in his arms with one last message to him: "Don't become a monster. Remember who you are, the people who love you, why you fight. Beranabus acted inhumanly, but he was never fully human to begin with. You were. You are. Don't lose track of that." But Grubbs is in a fight for his life and the survival of mankind. It is not time to let this monster go, and if it takes over, so be it. His chances --- the chances of any of them surviving --- are slim to none. There is no place in a demon-run world for humans. There is no compromise with the Shadow growing stronger. In order to go on, he does need help. So he calls on his old buddy, Kerne, who has the power to open and close the windows that will give them access to other worlds. He is the second person in the demonic weapon known as the Kah-Gash. Next is a girl named Bec, the third person they need and, unfortunately, now a prisoner of Lord Loss. If they can rescue Bec and if Kernel is willing to use his magic, there might be a chance. Kernel, though, has some issues with Grubbs --- and rightly so. In order to keep the boy from running away, Grubbs has clawed his eyes out. Though he has made sure that Kernel has been well taken care of in a hospital, and even has a bodyguard for him (the Disciple Kirilli), Kernel is angry. So when Grubbs shows up with his werewolf bodyguards, Kernel is not pleased. It takes a lot of convincing, conniving and the promise that, as soon as they can rescue Bec, Kernel can then decide what to do. The fact that his eyes can be restored by magic in the other worlds is also an attraction to him. With trepidations and great mistrust, Kernel is pulled into this mission --- a mission he is convinced is ill begotten. Grubbs has a brief moment of hope. They can locate the lodestones (used to open tunnels between the demon universe and humans), rescue Bec, and then, as the Kah-Gash, take their last stand against the Demonata. Everything changes in the blink of an eye when Grubbs has a nightmare about Bec and Lord Loss. In his dream he sees Bec not as a prisoner of Lord Loss, but as a partner of the dark, a traitor to all their hopes. At first he shakes this off, only to realize, when he shares it with the others, that it is not a dream --- he is seeing the truth. The worst thing has happened: the Kah-Gash has been broken, and Bec has turned against them. Darren Shan brings back other wonderful characters like Shark and Timas, as the little band, against all odds, forges on. The battles get bloodier, the losses staggering, and the smug assurance of a victory by Lord Loss with his new, powerful partner Bec more daunting than anything they've encountered. Leave it to Shan to pull out a few more surprising twists in this nail-biting finale to the exciting Demonata series. Readers, get ready for the unexpected --- this is no wimpy ending. "...you have to find heroism within yourself and play out the hand you've been dealt. The universe never sets a challenge that can't be met. You just need to believe in yourself in order to find the strength to face it." --- Grubbs Grady --- Reviewed by Sally M. Tibbetts

This whole series is great and is quite fun to read. I teach English, and I have recommended this to several reluctant male readers in my class, and they eat it up. I only wish I had something else to recommend when they finished this!

Darren Shan,

One of the best books I've ever read. Combines gruesome horror with undiniably funny humor. I just can't get enough of Shan's books!

Satisfying conclusion to the Demonata,

I had to order "Hell's Heroes", the final book in the "Demonata" series, from the UK because it was released there in October 2009 but is not scheduled for release in the USA until the second quarter of 2010. I was able to purchase it from www.amazon.co.uk without a problem and to have it shipped to the US very quickly.
Throughout the preceding nine books of the "Demonata" series, circumstances have gone from bad to worse. In "Hell's Heroes", the situation is so grim that it seems that all is lost for humanity and for the lead characters. "Hell's Heroes" provides resolutions to all the plot twists. None are particularly surprising but it adds up to a satisfying conclusion although readers of the "Cirque du Freak" series may find parallels with the ending of that series. There is little to no character development in this book but the plot is fast and furious with various fight scenes. As usual in a Darren Shan novel, the editing is sloppy with inevitable grammatical mistakes, although not nearly as many as litter the pages of the "Cirque du Freak" series. Subject and object pronouns challenge not only the author but also his editor apparently. What the author lacks in grammatical ability he more than makes up for in his ability to write gripping, action-packed prose with fast scenes that keep the reader anxious to read more. This book takes the mythology created earlier in the series to its logical conclusion.

this whole series just blew me away! It has all the elements of an excelent book; great character development, so many cliffhangers, a plot that actually makes sense, and a great ending unlike the cirque du freak series. I will have to say that my least favorite book in the series is blood beast, because aside from the last fifty pages, all it is is him going to school and dealing with friend problems so thats pretty boring, but i understand that that book was needed to understand things. I would have to say my favorite book in the series is either bec, demon appocalypse, or lord of the shadows.

Hell's Heroes was the best book I've read since I can remember. This book was definitely worth the time and the money that I put into it. Sadly, though, it may be the last book of this series but it was the best of them all! Fantastic, magnificent, and creative!

For all of you saying it was a bad ending then you obviously have not read the latter book because A BORING ENDING IS THE POINT DIPS! this book along with the whole series and Cirque Du Freak, and The City and the Larten Crepsley Saga are easily the best books i have ever read!!!!!!!!

I like many other US fan~readers of the demonata series opted for the UK edition, waiting for the US release was unbearable!! The book its amazing, Shan so far its one of my fav writers, the story needed an ending like that. I just feel sorry that the saga had to end, I do hope that Mr Shan reconsiders and resurrect some the main characters in a new spin for other books. The Demonata series were a total of 10 Books, some focused individually on a character, others on all three main characters. If Darren Shan ever reads this review, let me tell you Sir, you are an amazing writer and you have a 30 year old Fan in Puerto Rico. Keep up the amazing Work!!
