6th of 10 books in the Demonata Series from Darren Shan - I personally have not read any of this series. My son started out with the Cirque Du Freak Books (12 total) and went on to this series. He enjoyed reading and enjoys having the entire series. He started reading them around 6th grade and continued on thru high school.

A good read for teens, not so much for adult horror lovers,

"A demon shaped like a giant scorpion digs its stinger into a woman's eyes." - is the first line of a frantic opening in Darren Shan's Demon Apocalypse, the 6th book in Demonata, a YA horror series.
Demon Apocalypse is told from Grubbs Grady's point of view and reintroduces his friends Beranabus, Dervish, Bill-E and Juni. On the side of evil are Lord Loss and his minions of evil: Spine, Artery, and the acid spitting bunny Femur. It's an easy read and filled with all the cool and disgusting demons that would give unwary youngsters nightmares. It has plenty of back-story for those new to the tale, but reading the previous books is recommended because important details leading to this book are glossed over. Downfalls include some strange logic like Grubbs being taught to fly, but then told he would have to walk through a desert to leave the place to which he just flew. What? Shan also paints himself into a corner in the plot and uses time travel to fix it - so nothing I just read actually happened - I hate that. Still fans of the series will enjoy this addition, but hardened horror lovers probably not so much. Would make a good stocking filler for young teen horror fans.

Grubbs Grady is back, and he wishes he wasn't.
There are two things that Grubbs regrets the most: letting his transformation take away the lives of the ones he loved, and trusting Juni. When we last left him, Grubbs was on a plane ride with Juni, who promised to take care of him and love him. But while on board, Juni's true colors appeared, and they weren't so pretty. Turns out she had been working for Lord Loss and had used Grubbs' secrets and trust against him, lying to not only him but also to Dervish, who had fallen for her as well. Now Grubbs is trying to fend for himself, which isn't looking so bright since Lord Loss' little helpers are happily feeding on the passengers on the plane, while Lord Loss himself is trying to take Grubbs into his realm. Of course, Grubbs would rather die than to have to go with Lord Loss. But there isn't much he can do since no one is there to help him fight off all of the demons. Then an unlikely hero comes and saves Grubbs. Yet Grubbs knows that this isn't the end of Lord Loss, who is furious at him for ruining his game of chess. He knows that Lord Loss will not let anything stand in his way while trying to take revenge, but Grubbs isn't giving up without a fight. He survived more than once. He can surely survive again, right? Edgy, intense, and more gruesome than the other novels in THE DEMONATA series, Darren Shan does it again with DEMON APOCALYPSE, creating a captivating novel that will leave you speechless. Darker than ever, we are just glad to see Grubbs be the one to save the world, because without him, who can? Reviewed by: Randstostipher "tallnlankyrn" Nguyen

Terrifying but exciting,

A demon shaped like a giant scorpion digs its stinger into a woman's eyes. As they pop, it spits eggs into the bloody sockets, then watches with its almost human face as the eggs hatch and wriggling maggots feast on her flesh.
This is just the beginning of the sixth installment in Darren Shan's popular series, The Demonata. Can things get any more gruesome or horrifying for Grubs Grady? The answer, as readers will immediately see, is a definite yes! Grubs has not yet seen the worst of the evil Lord Loss and his league of vicious demons. Though Grubs knows he must try to rid the world of these creatures before they gain total control, he is also trying to resolve his own conflict --- that he, Grubs Grady, is a werewolf and a murderer. DEMON APOCALYPSE reintroduces the mystical wizard Beranabus, who not only saves Grubs's life but also puts him in the path of even more dangerous happenings. Lord Loss and his demon slaves, Spine and Artery --- plus Kernel, Bill-E and Juni --- are once again part of the cast. Most importantly, Bec is back --- but not in any way you would expect! This young woman, who met a tragic end in the fourth book, has grown more powerful through the years. Trapped by a curse from Lord Loss, she is now a threatening force against the demons. Bec and Beranabus have their own special history that is revisited through a strange twist of calamitous events. Together they bring much power --- but is all this power in vain? Leading up to book six, the events that took place in the tunnel of Dervish's property, including the death of Loch Gossel, are all related to what is happening in DEMON APOCALYPSE. The perfect setting has been created for the floodgates to open and the Demonata to, at last, have full reign in the world of man. This is Grubs's worst nightmare --- made even more terrible when he discovers that they indeed are all too late. Full of surprising encounters and revelations, DEMON APOCALYPSE is going to keep fans totally engrossed and gasping. Be sure to read the books in order to fully understand all the characters and their various roles in the fight against Lord Loss. Darren Shan's series is definitely proving to be a winner! --- Reviewed by Sally Tibbetts

*****WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR DEMON APOCALYPSE & CIRQUE DU FREAK*****
I was extremely disappointed with this entry into the Demonata series. I've enjoyed the series up until this point, & was highly anticipating this book after the cliffhanger ending of Blood Beast. The book starts out with so much potential. The Demonata have successfully invaded Earth. Everything that Grubbs knows has been destroyed. Everyone he knows has been killed. How can Darren Shan possibly formulate a way for Grubbs Grady to cope with this situation? Wait, I know! Magical time travel! Everything that was just mentioned never actually happened. Boy that sure was convenient. What makes this all the more frustrating is that this is not the first time this author has used this cop out. He did something very similar in his Cirque Du Freak series. The characters then spend a fairly long amount of time explaining that they can never ever do the whole magic time travel routine again. The entire conversation just reeks of an apology to the reader. Shan basically painted himself into a corner & rather than coming up with a creative solution to the problem, merely walked through the paint & asked us all to accept it. Again. I will read the next book in the series not only because I've invested so much time in it, but because I'm hoping that Shan will somehow redeem himself. At this point, I'm far from optimistic.
