I must admit, I couldn't keep the book down when I started reading it...but,I was stuck in an airplane for 9 hours with nothing to do.. When I finished it all I thought was this.. As in the case of his other book "The Alchemist" Paulo tends to keep his fictional characters and storyline extremely simple... He only targets to throw out thoughts along the pages, in this case, about the fight of good and evil, angels and devils, and the introduction of fear and its effects on people...It's as if there are certain statements that Paulo first types to keep in the book and then he builds the characters and storyline to fit the statements in.
This style is getting repetitive.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is good and what is evil?, February 11, 2002
Another masterpiece by the Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho.
This book, which is the third in the trilogy And on the Seventh Day (the first two are By the River Piedra I sat down and Wept, and Veronica Decides to Die) stands perfectly alone as well. The book tells the eternal story about good and evil. And the free will we all have to choose between the two of them. As Coelho says in the author's note: "When we last expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happend or in saying that we are not yet ready"

One day the people of the village Viscos are visited by the devil. Old Berta sees him when he comes, as she has been sitting outside her house waiting for him for years. The devil, in the figure of a stranger comes to look for proof that the evil exists and is the strongest, and the village of Viscos is to be the arena for this remarcably struggle. The bargirl, miss Prym meets the stranger and sees the devil, and the fight for herself and for all human has begun.

Coelho writes in a masterly way, somewhere between reality and ficition, and his fiction is easy to belive as reality, or may be it is no ficyon at all.

The fight between good and evil are everywhere, in myself, as it is between USA and Afghanistan. This book has something important to teach us all, and should be read by all humans who wants to be aware of the fight going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every man's dilemma, February 27, 2002
One day a stranger appears in the quiet village of Viscos. He places the villagers on the horns of a moral dilemma: if they kill somebody for no reason at all he will give them enough gold to last them for the rest of their lives. He gives this message to Chantal Prym, the waitress in the local hotel. She also gets another offer: she knows where the stranger has buries one bar of gold, enough to be able to leave Viscos, her long-time dream. The stranger is trying to find the good and bad in men and via this devilish dilemma he tries to find answers to his vital questions.

While the days of the week, the period given to the villagers by the stranger, pass by, the discussions start to divide the homogeneous and quiet society of Viscos: ordinary people become heroes, leaders are found to be villains. At the end of the week Viscos will never be the same...

This is part 3 of a trilogy in which the Brazilian author Paulo Coelho describes the lives of people who are all of a sudden confronted with vital questions. It is a beautiful book, well written, that leads to discussions and contemplation. Also a perfect book for a reading-club.

This book came right after September 11th and right when I was asking the question "what is the nature of being human? Good or evil?"
Paulo Coelho has written a powerful and gripping story that is not only very easy to read, but also touches, moves and inspires. I loved it!
