3.0 out of 5 stars Demon Keepers by Jessica Andersen, April 8, 2010
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
In two years and six months, the barrier separating earth from the demons of the underworld is set to disappear. The Banol Kax are set to up rise and bring an apocalypse. This is where the Nightkeepers come into play - they are to protect humans from this devastating event. The fourth book in the Final Prophecy series features Lucius and Jade. Lucius is not a Nighkeeper, but in a previous book a demon invaded his body, and as part of the exorcism, they tried to turn him into the Prophet, so he could gather more intel for them. In order to kick-start his powers the Nightkeepers think he needs to invoke sex magic, which means Jade is in for a bootycall. Jade and Lucius have a previous history, even have had sex - until the demon took over and Lucius has gone through an extensive recovery period.

All is for the fate of mankind, so they put aside the awkward feelings and move forward with the smexin'! First on the agenda, is to try to get into the library, a magical place which hopefully holds key information to their upcoming battle. Lucius is frustrated he can't get into the library - he has tried everything, and now sex is his last option. The Lucius that Jade meets now is physically different. Muscled, tall, broad - a true warrior. She realizes the Prophet spell must have had some effect, with such a drastic change in him.

Meanwhile the Banol Kax want their own sun god in the place of the the rightly god, Kinich Ahau. In nine days during the summer solstice, they are going to put their god in his place. In order to further the Nightkeepers cause and stop the sacrifice of the sun god - Lucius and Jade must answer the question - is it sex that unlocks these powers or love?

I enjoyed Demon Keepers and the world Jessica Andersen is building. First let me say, this is the first book I have read from this series and I definitely would have benefitted from reading the previous books. Once I discovered the glossary at the the back of the book, I felt I had a much better grasp of the world.

I love the relationship between Lucius and Jade and the action and adventure in this book, but before I go into more detail I first have to say the one thing that held me back throughout the book. Too much information and too much detail. This is a complicated world set up, with lots of players - both bad and evil and lots of things happening. I could barely see straight during the first twenty-five pages. I just wanted to get started with Lucius and Jade's story and have the important past events fall into place. Instead we get massive information overload and it made the story very hard to get into. I found this overly descriptive phrasing happening throughout the book.

However, diving through that - we have a great romance and a really fun story. The relationship between Lucius and Jade is a beautiful one - and although complicated outside forces are coming at them, their intimate relationship is really quite simple. It takes them some time to truly admit their feelings, but at the same time, they let it happen. They roll with the punches - they both have scarified so much for the greater good, I think they are expecting a much harder road to true love than what is presented to them.

The world Jessica Andersen has created is really cool. I wish I had read the previous three books, I think I would have appreciated it much more. Besides the romance, she has several other Nightkeeper characters, all with their own problems and issues to deal with. Very unique characters that were a lot of fun to read about. She also advances the story to the eventual 2012 deadline, and I am very interested to see how this is all going to end up.

Finally, there are several times I laughed throughout this book. Many smart-ass comments and humorous moments mixed in with stressful trying times for these characters makes it a fun read. Take out the overly descriptive and excessive information, and Demon Keepers is a solid mix of romance and action that makes for an enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this series! 5 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!, April 6, 2010
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
Lucius has changed in the year or so since a makol demon tried to possess him. Still living on the Nightkeepers' compound, Lucius yearns to be someone of worth, a warrior like the men that saved him. This saving by the Nightkeepers has been hard for Lucius to come to grips with and accept. Scarred and tortured while in the makol's thrall, he had been pegged for death but for reasons formerly unknown, the Nightkeepers saved him before the makol could fully possess him. Because of this he and the others don't actually know what the results of a thwarted possession are but they aren't willing to take any chances - especially since Lucius' soul has been returned to him as a Prophet. What kind, he doesn't know but one thing is for certain, Lucius needs to remain calm and because sex magic calms even the most desperate of men. Because of this, Jade is called in to help.

Jade knows she should turn down Strike's request. She and Lucius came together months ago, before his incomplete possession, and the results were explosive. She doesn't know how he has changed in the months since his soul became that of a Prophet but Jade knows her loyalty to her king and her fellow Nightkeepers is worth spending the night with Lucius. Or so she thinks. When kiss becomes more and Lucius and Jade are slammed into another dimension, things start getting interesting. The Banol Kax are definitely not finished with the Nightkeepers - not by a long shot.

I have to be honest and admit that I had forgotten about Lucius. After reading the first five chapters of DEMONKEEPERS, I wanted to kick myself because Lucius is more than what I remembered him to be in the NIGHTKEERPERS, this series first installment. Now he is warrior and fight ready and his sexuality has blossomed. His feelings about Jade are hard to define but I know he loves her - both were hesitant to even begin to hope that what they were feeling inside was the work of love - they feared it leaving them and they feared it making them weak. Thrown together by the Nightkeeper king, Jade has decided that no matter what, she has a job to do and being in love is not the most important - and I love this because Jade pretty much has to eat her words and change her entire thought process. With invigorating emotions and the feelings between these two strong characters blooming faster than both could imagine, Jade and Lucius have to somehow make peace with each other and their demons - after all, magic is in the air and who knows? Love might even be the answer that saves them.

Come along for an exhilarating ride into the paranormal world of Jade and Lucius. DEMONKEEPERS will keep you riveted - Intense sexual magic is the name of the game in DEMONKEEPERS and while some legends are solved, more are not and once more the world of Jessica Andersen captivates, captures, and completely grabs hold and won't let go. I am totally in for the long haul with this brilliant series - read them in order, read them out of order - just read them and become immersed in the mystical world of Mayan legends and the warriors called the Nightkeepers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the characters!, October 27, 2011
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
In Demonkeepers, the Nightkeepers must find a way to access the library of their ancestors in order to acquire knowledge of new spells and prophecies. Their only hope in finding the library is with Lucius. A human who has the Prophet's power lying within him. However, after rituals and blood sacrifices fail, it is decided that another type of magic should be used to try and awaken Lucius's powers. Sex magic. Although not having seen Lucius in months and not truly knowing the status of their relationship, Jade, who is tired of being on the sidelines, volunteers.

Demonkeepers is the second book I've read in Jessica Andersen's "Final Prophecy" series. From reading the first book in the series, Nightkeepers, there were some characters that I wanted to know more about, like Rabbit, Sven, Cara, and Jade. When I realized the fourth book was Jade and Lucius's story, I was very intrigued and couldn't wait to get started.

I must say that I really enjoyed the book. I liked Jade and Lucius. They were great characters, and I could easily connect with them. Both wanted to do more than what they felt they were actually capable of doing. Even though there were times where I was frustrated with them because they kept pulling back from each other, I thought they had an interesting (and hot) relationship. I was glad when they both began to realize that magic was not the only answer. And I was definitely rooting for them till the very end.

After reading this one, I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story and characters that suck you in., October 14, 2010
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
This series of books will change the way you look at life. They are truly amazing, exuding the perfect combination of humor, action, romance, and history. I have suggested them to several people- 6 of which now own the entire series. The only thing I don't like about these books is that they have not been made into movies. Since the story lines all lead to the world ending in 2012, it's upsetting to know that there isn't time to make them into movies so that everyone can enjoy the story. In all honesty, I feel they could have possibly grossed more then the Lord of the Rings series (or at least made an impact of similar proportions). They have that sense of epic magnitude that allows you to be sucked into the adventure. You can taste the blood on your lips, feel the energy of the barrier, and feel as if you are a part of something much greater then yourself. The characters are so realistic and developed that by the end of each book you feel like you're a part of their lives, and they're a part of yours. You see each character growing and changing before your eyes and you actually feel lucky to be a part of it all. If you haven't already bought this series of books, please give Night Keepers a try. Once you read it you'll be going to the bookstore and putting copies in front of the books on the new release shelves. Um... not that I've done that;) lol

This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
A continuing saga on the Mayan prophecy. These books do need to be read in order otherwise you'll read things that might make you wonder. Fast paced, some hot and steamy scenes but not as many as some. Exciting for all 'fantasy/sci-fi' readers with both female and male characters who are strong and efficent. Loved all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - From geek to hunk, the formerly possessed Lucius takes the spotlight, May 20, 2010

This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
I have really been enjoying Jessica Anderson's Nightkeeper series and love seeing the group of warrior/mages descended from Mayans find love as they try to stave off demonic forces and keep those evil beings (both human and supernatural) from bringing about the prophesied 2012 end time.

Anderson again brings her impressive amount of research and detail about all things Mayan to bear as we finally get the story of the geeky and formerly possessed Lucius. I have felt sorry for Lucius in the past books and was happy to get his story. Demonkeepers starts with Nightkeeper librarian, Jade, deciding to 'take one for the team'. Jade hopes that sex with Lucius will be the key to unlock Lucius' ability to find 'the Library' and to gain access to the information necessary for the Nightkeepers to fight their enemies and save the world.

since the last book, Lucius has undergone a metamorphosis. No longer is he the gangly intellectual, Lucius' time with the demon has triggered a change in his body (he's now totally hunk worthy) and brought a dangerous edge to his attitude. But behind the dangerous exterior still lies the scrawny nerdy teen who was a disappointment to his brawny athletic family. Jade has her own feelings of unworthiness to deal with, since her Nightkeeper powers haven't manifested yet. With those insecurities in common pair are quite perfect together and their chemistry is good, the real trick is getting over the baggage from their last attempt at a relationship- Jade just wanted to be bed buddies and Lucius was the type to lead with his heart.

I really likes Demonkeepers, I really liked Lucius and was happy to see that despite the new packaging and how tough he starts out with Jade, the core of what made him appealing is still intact. And I still liked all of the Mayan mythology that flavors this series and I thought that the background story to save 'the sun' was good, even though with all the build-up of the fate-of-the-world-hanging-in-the-balance the actual resolution to this was awfully quick and easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, Complex and Compelling!, May 19, 2010
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought the Nightkeeper series thinking it would be a great book for my husband - it was - but within reading just the first few pages I was hooked. I love how each book focuses on two main characters, but you still get glimpses into the other players' personalities. The story line is enchanting. The characters are complex and compelling. Jessica Andersen has an amazing gift in building a very captivating world that will leave you breathlessly waiting for the next installment. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a great story with action, love, sex, magic and humor!

I greatly enjoyed this book of The Final Prophecy series by Jessica Andersen. I like getting to know the characters & learn more about them prior to the "now time". Even beyond the book in which a couple has been featured, you still learn bits & pieces about them in subsequent ones!! That's the biggest reason I am so caught up in this series. I've really enjoyed "watching" Rabbit grow up!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it, favorite so far in the series, April 23, 2010
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
Several months ago a makol (demon) tried to permanently posses human Lucius Hunt but the Nightkeepers were able to save him before the possession was complete. He is now living at Skywatch (Nightkeeper compound) and is still fighting the nightmares of his attack. But he doesn't have time to dwell on that now. When Lucius' soul was returned to his body it came back as a prophet which the Nightkeepers desperately need. Each passing day is one day closer to 2012 and a possible war that would see the rise of demons and the Banol Kax, the lords of the underworld. The problem is Lucius has no idea how to call up his prophet powers. Sex magic is what the Nightkeepers use to help call up their powers and this is where Jade comes in.

Jade is not thrilled about being asked to be Lucius' booty call (her words) but not because she doesn't have feelings for him but rather she does and refuses to admit it. Five month ago they had a brief yet intense sexual encounter that sent Jade running. She is tired of being in the background and wants stand proud as a warrior. She will let nothing hold her back from proving herself not even her feelings for Lucius. But after their encounter she begin to fall for him but it may already be too late. Now is not the time for them to think about where they want their relationship to go. The sun god Kinich Ahau is being held prisoner in the underworld and if they do not free him, their chance of stopping the rise of the Banol Kax will be near impossible.

Lucius and Jade have been two characters that blended into the background in the previous books. They were there but never really stood out or in Lucius' case, just got themselves in trouble. In Demonkeepers Lucius is now physically stronger and is not as timid as he once was. He is going to fight and do everything he can to prove he can be a useful tool in the fight against evil. Jade's main responsibility has always been to the Nightkeeper archives but wants to be out fighting with the others and have magic of her own. Both of these characters are missing something but when they come together they fill in the missing pieces. They are just both stubborn and need more convincing.

I enjoy Jessica Andersen's books because even though it is set in our world, she still make it her own and you can actually picture the way her characters and dimensions look by the way she describes them. One issue I have is all the detail she puts into them. It isn't a bad thing but it can definitely be confusing at times. There are a lot of entities, places, back stories and people and it becomes so much that it all starts to blend together and you lose track of exactly what is what or who is who. Other than that, Demonkeepers shines the spotlight on two of my favorite characters from the series and is filled with suspense, action, romance and comedy. If you want to read this book you could choose to read first but I suggest to go back and start from book one, Nightkeepers, because there is A LOT you will miss out on.

5.0 out of 5 stars In 2012 Mayan demons save the world with Love!, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Demonkeepers: A Novel of the Final Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
I give Jessica Andersen's latest novel of The Final Prophecy, Demonkeepers five stars! I couldn't put it down. Now I want to read her earlier novels. The author pulls you right in with wild and hot sex, interesting challenges for the characters, and a tense time frame. The research into the Mayan culture is beautifully woven into the modern world. It's getting pretty close to 2012! I'd like to believe that there are still a few ancient Mayan magicians trying to avert disaster. This series will please archaeologists and science fiction fans as well as romance readers.Great story, great romance, and great writing!
