Excellent Horror Gore with a Strong Literary Style,
By
This review is from: Demonmachy: Demonic Apocalypse (Paperback)
I'm probably not your typical Brant Danay fan - I'm not real fan of hardcore horror, blood and guts but I'm glad I gave this one a try as it is something quite different.Sure, it is full of gory horror but there is much more to this work than that. For me, Danay is a rare thing these days, he seems to have really carved out each line - his text scares, challenges and has you reaching for the dictionary in equal measure. Be warned - this book will make you work for it but the like any successful book, the story entices you in. On the subject of story, if you are interested in any kind of deity or mystical being - chances are they are in here. It's as if Danay took everything humans have ever written about the gods and threw it up in the air. He obviously knows his stuff well and is very clever in how he weaves it all together. So, I won't ruin the story, only include my favourite line to give a flavour. "Portions of the Necrodelic's entrails were impaled upon the spikes of Drelei's stegosaurus tail.." You get the idea... In summary, there are guts a plenty but I still think this is essentially a literary work. If Poe and Lovecraft were around today, I'm sure they would be interested in this genre of work, that is as long as Danay didn't chop them up to use their blood as the evil ink for writing his latest tale.

Blood Bongs and Fiend Farms,
This review is from: Demonmachy: Demonic Apocalypse (Paperback)
Demonmachy is like no other book I have read and I think Danay has a bright future in front of him.Demonmachy is not for the week of stomach and has some of the most evil and imaginative demons you will come across this side of Hell- Megafiend, Hydraman, Morpheus rex, Omnibeast and many many more. It's also worth noting that the forces of good do not get a mention and neither does God. This is pure Evil vs Evil. If there is a Hell I think I have now had a true glimpse of what it may be like.

Danays Inferno,
By ChunkeyMunkey (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Demonmachy: Demonic Apocalypse (Paperback)
Demonmachy is the love child Dante and Phillip K Dick would have had if they got together and had a wild night on mushrooms. It just exudes evil and takes you places you never want to go and introduces you to demons you hope you never meet. All in all Danay has a wild imagination and puts on paper some of the most extreme vivid imagery you will find anywhere. 10 out of 5

Stupidly intense!,
This review is from: Demonmachy: Demonic Apocalypse (Paperback)
This book's demented, visionary imagery is like a prose analogue of the artwork/design/'vibe' of 90s adult sick & Satanic horror comics, like those published by Verotik. Polysyllabic in extremis, with a coruscating vortex of bizarre, infernal neologisms, it is almost stupidly intense and relentless, always hovering on the borderline of unintentional(?) self-parody - and sometimes verging over the edge. Monsters, fiends and cosmic demons war-on in a vile necroverse of qliphothic, polymorphically perverse filth. Unmissable!

This book is beautifully and lovingly written, with vivid descriptive style that for the most part borders on poetry. The imagery is gory and over the top, but there is no trace of humour, in fact the book has a very sombre mystical or religious tone. Far from being traditional horror, if the imagery were not so bloody or carnal it would be a New Age genre novel. I would have preferred the book to be a bit longer and fleshed out, especially with character development as I greatly enjoyed the characters and the world the author has created.

I came upon this by searching "Free Horror Titles for Kindle" in Google and clicking "I'm Feeling Lucky". As such, I had very low expectations for this title. I'd never heard of the author before, and a quick click on his name shows he hasn't published anything else of significance before or since this title.Well, Brant, are you listening? Don't make this your last book! This book is a bit disturbing in all the right ways and has a rich narrative that keeps your eyes on the pages for longer than you planned. Let me just go out of my way to say that the story is even secondary to the writing style. One might argue that the book is a bit overwritten; every single line of prose is a work of literary art. The book itself reads like an epic poem. It's full of similes, metaphors, etc., all with a decidedly dark tinge and tone. When I first started reading I groaned and went "Oh God, let's see how long this jerk can keep this up." As the page turns went on and on (on my kindle), the groans turned into fascinated grunts. This guy's literary voice is unparalleled. I'm not prepared to say he's the best writer I've ever read, not at all, but he certainly is distinct, and not in a bad way. The writing is very high level, but the funny thing about it is that it's very easy to read. The word choices aren't all that advanced, save for all the made up words that require some guesswork to figure out, and despite his descriptive nature with obscure word choices and writing patterns, you won't find yourself clawing for a dictionary all too often. His style is surprisingly approachable. Let me just say that I'm officially looking forward to the next book by this author and I hope there are many more to come. I don't know this publishing company, but I'll keep my eye on them as well.

Don't get this if you are a child.Don't get this if you are offended by demons, violence, graphic sex and drug use. Still here? THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! I've been reading for about 35 years of my life. I have never, and Jetpack means never, read anything at all comparable to this story. The characters are evil. Pure evil. And it's wonderful to read. The levels of violence are astounding. The author has drawn on so much to weave together a believable story and characters. I'm also glad that there are no people. The focus is on the demons, as it should be. Really looking forward to the follow-ups. The only minor complaint at all is that the author is a touch wordy. But that's a minor quibble.

I have to say, the style in which this book is written is just as morbidly fascinating as the content. I probably shouldn't have enjoyed reading it as much as I did because it is the most grotesque, gory, violent, blood-drenched thing I've ever read, but it is also the most refreshingly imaginative, intriguing, well-paced, action-packed, full of fantastic descriptive imagery, incredibly plotted thing I've ever read too!

Fresh from the Severed Press stable, this is a new author you won't want to miss. Not for the faint of heart, Brant Danay takes you on an extradimensional journey through the pits of evil into places your mind never sought to experience - but I mean this in the best way possible. Amazon.com actually was originally going to ship this one in a lead box, but I hear these days it's packed in a severed head - have fun explaining that one to UPS! All in all, a dynamite horror read - it certainly explores some of the more 'out there' concepts in contemporary horror, and the originality of the work is my favourite part. At the end of the day, a 5/5 on the horror scale - but then again, the devil made me do it. |
