More About the Author

When I sold to Silhouette books on my wedding anniversary in 1979 I didn't expect to get this far. I love what I do and can't imagine doing anything else. I'm married with two white mini Schnauzers, one parrot, and a demented tortoise. We live in Southern California near San Diego in a town that's provided fodder for some of my stories. I like to say that when we moved here twenty years ago there were three romance writers. Now there is only me and to date I have not been considered a suspect.

A lot of my backlist books are now available for your Kindle and in print along with new novellas featuring the first witches in the Hex series.

My Hex series are the books of my heart. The ones I've wanted to write for a long time and so glad to see out there. Many readers are confused by the two Demon titles and different cover looks. They're a part of the Hex series, still the disgraced witches from the Witches Academy, just with a different look. And yes, more Hex books will be coming!

There's times I think I enjoy writing the creatures more than the characters. And probably why my Fluff and Puff bunny slippers tend to never be where I left them!

This is the third book, by Linda Wisdom, I've read. If I had to classify her writing I'd say she writes sexy humorous stories with sparkling characters, a hefty dash of danger, and a serious thread of kick ass heroine. Some of her stories are more kick ass than others and this was one of them. I'd say it was my favorite of the three I've bought and read.

Maggie is in law enforcement. Like her counterparts on today's forces, she is a well trained in defense, the use of weapons, and working undercover. Maggie is also good at her job in both research and connecting the dots to bring down the bad guys. The tedious parts.

However that's where the similarity between today's law enforcement officers and Maggie end. She works for a secret branch of para law enforcement called The Hellion Guard. They police otherworldly creatures and keep humans and other creatures safe from bad guys. Instead of Kevlar she wears fabric enhanced with protective spells and a diamond encrusted Black Widow Spider with ruby eyes. Looks like a kick ass tat but is very much alive and part of her arsenal. Did I mention she was also a witch?

Maggie is a serious career girl, hasn't had a date in way too long to remember, and feels she hasn't a maternal bone in her body and doesn't want one. She has very little trust for demons as most of them have an agenda and usually on the receiving end of her brand of justice.

Ms. Wisdom then throws her into the worse case scenario and fun begins. Maggie reluctantly becomes a godmother to one of her team member's newborn--has to be there at the birth (eww and nausea).... She's assigned to be a loving guardian of a teenage girl (I can't print her reaction here) who's all mouth, attitude, and just so happens to be #1 on the list for a Mayan human sacrifice designed to free a major bad guy. And worse of all, her libido starts doing the hallelujah chorus when she meets Declan who is half demon and redefines hot sexy male and is her partner in protecting said teen. Yowza.

The only predictability in this story is good guys winning over the bad guys. How that happens leads the reader into a labyrinth of unexpected twists and turns and a very satisfying dénouement.

This is truly a fun, fun story told by a talented author who seamlessly blends paranormal, danger, humor, and love.

Okay, first off let me say that normally I find the guys on these types of books to me too much--too many muscles, too much hair, etc. But the guy on this cover, yum! Okay, just had to get that over with :)

Maggie is one kick-butt character. I loved her! I loved her feisty and sarcastic attitude but with that touch of girliness and slight maternal instinct. I also enjoyed Courtney and Delcan (Half fire demon but completely hot!) It was a nice cast of characters. Even the elf Sybil (who I love the picture in my head of having lavendar wings..but this seems more faery than elf) and Elle, the spider tattoo (at first it freaked me out but then I grew to enjoy her).

There was some action in this story, but not too much. Just enough that it kept my attention but didn't turn me off to the story. Overall, just a fun paranormal read.

I hadn't originally planned on reading this series but when A Demon Does it Better became available for review I quickly changed my mind. Only having to read one book in order catch up on Linda Wisdom's Demons series is an easy task. Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend's colorful characters, whirlwind pace and happy ending make this novel easy to love. This is my second witchy read this week and I'm beginning to think that my perception of them is all wrong! Maggie is a powerful, no-nonsense preternatural who's so badass I'm scouring my thesaurus trying to find an adjective that does her justice!

So far, the characters in this series are amazing! Aside from Maggie's kickassedness, her flame Declan is my dream guy (I know, he's taken but a girl can fantasize). He's part fire demon and that trait alone makes him HOT! I'm an Aries so I love the color red and anything that's flame related. Stereotypical much? Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Declan's got a lot more going for him than just his sex appeal; he's also smart, family-oriented, holds his own in a fight and of course, is great in bed. I liked how Maggie would mess with him whenever he'd put his foot in his mouth or say something that she didn't like. More than once he found himself wearing his drink or getting rained on in his office. The witch's spells take playful teasing to a whole new level! My favorite character was Elle by a landslide. She's a jeweled, black widow tattoo and part of Maggie's arsenal of weapons. When Elegance isn't dropping witty remarks she's busy researching ways to keep her lovers from dying. I'm sure you're already familiar with the fact that this type of spider eats their mates once the deed is done.

I liked the background story of the Demons world.... The guards are an interesting bunch with a wide variety of histories and supernatural traits. I also loved how Maggie isn't your typical witch. She's 700 years old and comes off as something "more" than just human. The plot line captivated me early on. The protagonist ends up stuck playing mom to a teenager which, understandably, ends up being an absolute nightmare! Maggie eventually has to tell her charge that she's a witch but puts a spell on Courtney so that she can't reveal the secret. Only gibberish comes out of the kid's mouth whenever she tries to say something magic-related. This made for a few hilarious conversations about potholes and frying pans!

Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend is a multifaceted read packed with so much good stuff that it's overflowing! I'm very happy with my decision to give this series a try and I'm even happier that A Demon Does It Better is already loaded onto my Kobo. Linda Wisdom is now on my list of must-read authors and I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for her future publications. Read more ›

Hellion Guard Maggie O'Malley is used to being the Big Witch on Campus. She and her team track down and capture all those pesky preternatural criminals who break the worst laws. She's sort of like...Glinda with a gun. And a killer bod, a killer spider, a killer attitude...

Maggie definitely rocks the deadly vibe.

That fact is certainly not lost on Declan, new owner of Damnation Alley, the underground club that gets trashed within ten minutes of Maggie's arrival, when a supposedly easy capture goes explosive, squishy, and smelly. Half fire demon, Declan gets more than hot under the collar when he first sets eyes on Maggie. The destruction of one of the club's bars and several walls doesn't cool his ardor for the wickedly sexy witch, despite the fact that demons and witches are inherent enemies. If anything, it further inflames him.

When Declan's sister gets picked up by the Guard, he beards the witch in her compound. His sister hadn't broken the law, the precognitive vision she saw was so horrifying that it drove her a little mad. She'd been picked up for her protection, as well as that of everyone around her. Though Declan wants his sister back, he agrees to allow her to stay at the compound, so long as he's involved in averting the death and destruction she's foretold. So long as he's working with Maggie.

As Declan starts to wear down Maggie's meager resistance to hot half-demons who are totally into her, she's tasked with a job that's far outside of her comfort zone. She's to guard the teen-aged girl who is fated to be sacrificed to a monstrous Mayan deity in an attempt to bring him forth into this realm. So, in other words, young girl dies......world is painted red in the wash of blood and viscera of the masses, human and preternatural both, then dies.

Hey, at least Maggie won't have to worry about job security any time soon. Or, if she can't stop this prophecy, ever.

Sophisticated and sexy, Wisdom kicks off her Demons series with a bang. Maggie was one of my favorite kinds of heroines in the paranormal genre. Just enough baggage to make her sympathetic and a little damaged, more than enough strength and determination to save her own butt and everyone else's around her.

Declan was a sweet bit of male yumminess, too. He wasn't the warrior and power character that Maggie was, but he wasn't a beta male either. He could hold his own, but his presence was more pertinent in the romance than in the threads of external plot conflict.

This book was a little different than a traditional paranormal romance, developing in a more unconventional manner. Not all of that worked for me. The first half focused more heavily on the world-building and romance arc of Declan and Maggie. The threat of the Big Bad was there, but the plot threads supporting the evolution of that conflict didn't start to really have presence in the story until the halfway mark. That made the book seem almost bisected to me. I would have preferred the plotline of the two halves be better woven together throughout the whole of the book.

Still, I enjoyed most of the book very much, though I admit, the first half was the strongest for me in terms of story and character development, as well as world-building and mythos creation. The last ten to fifteen percent of the book, though, had some major problems and the external conflict took a few big missteps.

When one of the major players of the Big Bad movement, a nasty sort who trusts no one, suddenly put his plans in the hand of someone with a history of defying him, I lost my grip on the story. Sure that mistake helped the good guys, but it was such an implausible scenario that it was impossible to maintain a willing suspension of disbelief.

And the conflict resolution came too quickly to an abrupt and jarring end, leaving a plot hole or two and a disappointing sense of anticlimax.

This book has a lot of promise, and it speaks well for the quality of the rest of the series. Wisdom's world is creative, and it's filled with extraordinary characters who are pivotal to the depth of plot and story. The romance filled out in all the right places, and it's sexy as hell. I would have liked the two halves of the story more if they had been better blended, or if the plot holes had been addressed. And the climax of the conflict was disappointing on more than one level. I've got to admit, though, I'm intrigued by the world and the creatures inhabiting it. I'm not done visiting that world just yet. I want to know what comes next.
