I guess I'm not so hot to trot for this story. Main reason: it moved very sloooow and most of the dialogue happened in the heads of the characters. Not much "talking" to each other in this book and that distracted me totally from the story. I guess that's how this author writes her stories and some like it and some don't. I don't and I won't get any future books by this author.

I loved this book! Ciarran, a sorcerer, battles demons and protects mortals. In a confrontation, he is almost forced through a portal into the demon world. He manages to escape, but in the process, a demon becomes part of him, and from that day forward he has to battle evil within himself. His romance with Clea is totally HOT! They are both wonderful characters with terrific chemistry together. The story explores how they can be together when Clea appears to be draining his power; and how can he stay with her anyway when he is part demon? And that part is getting stronger all the time. Great read!

Great book for escaping into another realm filled with romance,

This review is from: Demon's Kiss (Compact of Sorcerors, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
In this paranormal romance, Clea Masters first met Ciarran, a member of The Compact of Sorcerers, the night her parents were killed. Ciarran's job is to guard the wall between the human and demon realms. Clea was attacked by a demon and near death, when Ciarran tried to help her. She reached out to him and accidentally stole some of his powers. Clea's siphoning of Ciarran's powers caused his hand being pushed into the demon realm, resulting in him having some demon in him now.
Twenty years later, Ciarran is there to rescue Clea once again. Clea is now all grown up and has no recollection of ever meeting Ciarran as a child. She isn't even aware of having powers herself. When the two of them reunite, there is a strong connection because of their shared powers. An evil demon has discovered that Clea is the key to opening the demon realm. If they can capture Clea, the realm will be open for them to come into our world and cause devastating destruction. Ciarran offers to guard Clea and keep her safe from the demons that are after her. The only problem is, whenever they are near each other, she unknowingly steals his powers, draining him of them. Will the demon find Clea and open the demon realm? Will Ciarran be able to keep Clea safe or will their passion for each other drain him of all his powers? I absolutely loved reading Demon's Kiss. Eve Silver has created an extraordinary world in this book. Sorcerers, demons, magic, and hot romance makes for a fascinating book that you won't be able to put down. The fight scenes are suspenseful, the villains are true evil, the romance is sexy, and the characters are unique. I will definitely read more books by Eve Silver and will eagerly await the next book in this new series. Armchair Interviews says: Curl up in your favorite chair, and escape into this paranormal romance that will take you away into another world.

Ciarran D'Arbois is one of the brotherhood, the Compact of Sorcerers, sworn to protect the wall between human and demon worlds with their lives. Twenty years ago, a momentary lapse in his controlled emotions led to the doorway opening briefly and allowing the demon of plague, Asag, to enter our world. It cost Ciarran his hand and a piece of his soul when a dying child was able to leach some of his power to heal herself. Clea Masters is a young student trying to make ends meet after her grandmother's death. Years ago an accident cost her parents their lives and Clea discovered an indefinable power within her that warns and protects her from danger. When a demon attacks her the very day of her grandmother's funeral, Clea suddenly discovers a world she never knew existed. The only person who can help her is a man who looks familiar and exudes a dangerous appeal. Ciarran and Clea must team up to find out who is behind the latest scheme to open the doorway using Clea as the key. They also learn there is a traitor amongst the Compact and must find the culprit before all hope is lost. It certainly doesn't help that these two loners find a new bond growing between them that neither can deny. Is love enough to hold the monsters at bay? In Demon's Kiss, a departure from the historical Gothic genre for which Eve Silver is making quite a name for herself, she brings us a fast paced story of paranormal intrigue and passionate romance between two unique individuals. World building is exquisite, a characteristic I've come to expect from anything Eve writes. I could envision the portal between the worlds and the demons' struggles to break through the magic imprisoning them. Ciarran is a deeply wounded man, constantly waging an internal struggle against the demon festering beneath the surface since that night twenty years ago. He is very close to losing the fight and this shows in everything he does. This has also forced him into a deep seclusion since any interaction with others distracts him from using his strength to fight. He needs Clea as much as he needs to escape her, as she is the only one who can help him escape his personal hell. Clea has lost everyone that matters to her and has a hard time putting her faith in a stranger. She is a very practical young woman, in spite of the strange force inside her, and has a hard time accepting this new world she is thrown into. However, that very practicality helps her face this new threat, making her realize that Ciarran is her life line against the demons hunting her. We are kept guessing through much of the book as to who the traitor is assisting the demon Asag. Several red herrings are thrown into the mix to keep us that much more on our toes trying to solve the mystery. While the book does stand on it's own, it is quite apparent this is only the beginning of a fascinating thrill ride through the human and demon worlds. The supporting cast of characters adds much to the story, giving us a fuller, richer tale. Whether penning beautiful and majestic gothic romance, or a thrills and chills paranormal romance, Eve Silver has what it takes to rise to the top in the romance market, and maintain a coveted place of honor on my personal "keeper" shelf. © Kelley A. Nice read,
This review is from: Demon's Kiss (Compact of Sorcerors, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this book. I liked the two main characters, they're strong individuals, who find themselves facing new worlds. She, in the form of a world of magic and the presence of a hunk; he, in the form of a woman he's coming to love.
Also I enjoyed the inner struggle of Ciarran, the fight between good and evil, and the advice she gives him (the same advice her grandma gave her, btw). The book was well-developed, with some nice ideas and a good feeling to it. Now, after having read that the following one is a bout Dian... I want it!!! LOL!

The "Compact of Sorcerors" series is yet another clone of Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Dark Hunter" books. This is not necessarily a bad thing and I found the premise here to be well thought out and interesting. I really liked the two main characters and the action in the book was pretty non-stop. However, I had a couple of problems with the book that other readers may or may not agree with. First, this is a "into the mind of a serial killer" book. There are several short sections of the book where we see into the mind of a demon. This is not your cuddly, funny, slightly wicked demon, but your horrible, totally evil, Book of Revelations demon. I personally find getting into the mind of a serial killer disturbing although I have many friends who would disagree and love "true crime" books. The second problem I had with the book is a bit of a spoiler....
I didn't like the way that the two main characters never worked to understand how she was depleting his power and how they could stop it. I know things were happening very quickly but it really bugged me the way they just kept going along without trying to do something about the situation. I had to take away two stars just for this because it seemed like lazy writing.

Paranormal Sorcerer Romance,

This review is from: Demon's Kiss (Compact of Sorcerors, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love Eve Silver. I really do. Here is a woman who knows how to tell an interesting, plot-driven story, and yet also provides readers with filled-out, believable characters. Her female main character manages to be strong in the most adverse of circumstances. I especially like that her female characters are always strong -- not your typical romance novel heroine.
If you like science fiction/fantasy, and you like romance, you will like this book. If you are willing to believe in (or at least enjoy reading about) sorcerers and demons, light and dark portions of existance, and "super-powers" - then this is right up your alley. Although I typically prefer gothic romances, I found this, and Eve's sci-fi romance "Driven" (written under the name Eve Kenin) to be wonderful books, completely engrossing. I can't wait for her next book!

I gave this book 5 stars because it is fantastic. The heroe and heroine in this book are hot, sexy and witty. It has some dark moments in the story, but I wouldn't let that stop you from reading this book. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

This review is from: Demon's Kiss (Compact of Sorcerors, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book started out strong, but fizzled quickly. It had a promising premise, but that premise was under-developed. I was intrigued by and wanted to know more about Ciarran and his Compact of Sorcerers. Unfortunately, this book didn't tell me much about either. The antagonist was pretty two-dimensional as well.
This author is very fond of the "instant chemistry/instant sexual obsession" plot device. I admit it's pretty handy. With instant animal attraction, the characters can develop a very strong emotional bond (which is what every romance reader wants) in twenty-four to forty-eight hours, in spite of the fact that those characters have barely spoken to each other during that time. I think it's lame and lazy, but more and more romance authors get away with it. So instead of actual plot, where the characters and their world were fleshed out, we got the same thoughts repeated over and over in the characters' minds. Halfway through the book, I thought, "I get it! Clea saps Ciarran's magic, and that's a bad thing. What are you two going to do about it?" Then at the end of the book, Clea is no longer "stealing" Ciarran's magic, but there's no explanation of how that is so. Clearly, other books are in the offing, where the author will (hopefully) develop the plot a bit more. I'll check out the next book in this series, but definitely through my public library. |
