Book Description

Demonworld is the first in a ten-book series that chronicles the life of Wodan, a son of laborers and heir to an amazing destiny.

Wodi grew up hearing tales of the outside world. Living in an isolated, technologically advanced city, it was hard to imagine that the rest of humanity suffered at the hands of sadistic, godlike monsters called flesh demons. Then Wodi finds himself exiled into the wasteland, victim of a death sentence handed out for no reason that he can understand. Moving boxes in his father’s store and attending the local university did nothing to prepare him for the horrors that lay ahead.

Unfortunately for the ones behind his exile, the wasteland turns Wodi into a force to be reckoned with. His journey through baking, wind-tortured deserts and poisoned oases wakes something up inside of him, and Wodi learns that the human spirit has strength that few can imagine… and also comes equipped with terrifying weapons that those who crossed him cannot even begin to comprehend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Highly imagined Lovecraftian sci-fi October 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Demonworld by Kyle B. Stiff is a highly imagined Lovecraftian tale that combines science fiction, fantasy, and horror in a way I've never seen. It's dark and dystopian, but with elements of humanity that hint at a hopeful future in the books to come.

The world is dominated by monsters called "flesh demons." Most human tribes appease the flesh demon "gods" by offering them human sacrifices. But a small hope for humanity exists in a technologically advanced city called Haven. It has survived and thrived by staying isolated on a small, bleak island in the middle of a vast ocean, hidden for hundreds of years from the flesh demons and aggressive human city-states.

Wodan, a gifted teenage boy from Haven, finds himself mysteriously exiled from his home for no reason he can comprehend. Wodan has to battle flesh demons, their twisted minions, and humans just as warped and evil as the demons, to return home to Haven and discover who kidnapped him and dropped him into the middle of the wasteland.

Demonworld was a book of extremes for me.

Many times I was floored by beautiful prose or a brilliant plot twist. The story and setting were intriguing and kept me turning the pages. I was also impressed with the editing, since I didn't find one typo or grammar mistake.

But the next moment, I was jarred out of the fantasy world by 21st century American slang uttered by supposedly primitive tribesmen (I saw "ding-bat," "nit-wit," and "weirdo;" one primitive referred to his biceps as "cannons"). The events in the book were far removed from our own time, so I would liked to have seen dialogue with slang and speech patterns that evolved from this strange world, not our present day.

Another issue I had was character "monologue-ing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem August 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In a sea of unpolished authors this one sparkles. Demonworld is a book filled with vibrantly characterized people struggling for survival in a hostile environment. If I were to try to place this book in a genre, I would have a hard time deciding between science fiction and horror.

The journey is an amazing and imaginative exploration of the psyches of characters taken from civilization and dumped in one of the most hostile terrains in the world unprepared. The journey home is fraught with peril and tests the limits of the characters sanity and explores the hidden savage hidden within humanity.

The book also details the intrigue and politics of a democratic political system and some of the men caught up within it who find their ability to function becoming more and more constrained while they attempt to do what they believe to be necessary in order save humanity.

Pros: Fantastic characterizations, excellent setting, and good pacing, excellent editing.

Cons: The cover art is weak, the book title fails to do its contents justice. This book is for a mature audience, I would highly suggest pre-reading this book before allowing anyone under fifteen to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good... April 26, 2012
By Jim
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The only frustration I have with this book is that I have no clue when the second one will be out! What a great story, full of potential and depth. I found myself associating much of what exists in the book with the world we live in, and while the fight between "good" and "evil" has been played out many times over I find this one to be refreshing in a way that is difficult to put into words.

I highly recommend the read, it's absolutely worth the time. The second book can't come quick enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Demonworld > Tolkien + Mad Max + The Bible May 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is so awesome and I can't wait to see where the rest of the series leads. I don't want to seem like a slobbering fanboy but it's hard to quantify this work. I can't figure out if it's the structure or the inventiveness that I like more. For example when I was a kid, every fantasy (and usually sci-fi as well) was about good vs evil. Nowadays, it seems like every author is obsessed with moral "shades of gray" to the point where I kind of just don't like any characters any more. So many writers want to write about a journey, but then they also try to subvert every convention to show that they're beyond all that "outdated" stuff. Then this guy Kyle B. Stiff comes along (is that really his real name I wonder?) and does some stuff that's for real unexpected. First he spends time showing that his characters are human or flawed or whatever, but then he puts in some real moral quandaries, he has some people choosing good options, and suffering for it, but he still shows that good choices pay off in the end, and he has some characters making bad choices and getting by at first, but then ultimately paying the price for being evil or just plain sneaky. There's something really old school about it that I like. Kyle B. Stiff (okay surely that's not his real name) does not try to show how smart he is with a lot of overwrought postmodern prose or by showing characters ONLY being flawed. I'm pretty sure he knows his Joseph Campbell because you can tell there's a great respect for the hero's journey in this book, he's not trying to undermine a reader's need to SEE a hero's journey.

There's a lot of cool creative stuff going on here. Some other review mentions that it's like Tolkien meets Mad Max and I see where they're going with that, but I think it's more than that.

Pretty good missing some details. Scenery could be described a little better but overall decent ideas. The political dialogue was not quite clear in the beginning.

More About the Author

Kyle B. Stiff used to review video games for a living and developed a reputation as an out-of-control maverick because he never once used the phrase "edge of your seat" or claimed that a game would leave the player "breathless".

He is hard at work writing and rewriting the various books in two epic series, Demonworld and Heavy Metal Thunder. The first is a post-apocalyptic "hero's journey" through the human condition; the second follows a branching narrative structure that borrows elements from the classic Choose Your Own Adventure and Lone Wolf gamebooks, then updates the genre with quality writing and adult themes.

Kyle B. Stiff has been around long enough to know that he knows very little about the world, but he still studies mythology and human behavior because it's fun to make an effort to understand.

He currently lives with his soulmate somewhere in Kentucky. He can be found here and here:
