Denali Protractor,
By Jeff Shultz "Shultzy" (Wayzata, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Denali 11-Inch Digital Angle Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
I ordered this item almost out of curiosity. An accurate digital protractor for under $30 would be useful and interesting.
One jab at the Amazon information...the "accuracy" of this item is listed by Amazon as +/- .1 degree. The manufacurer/distributor says the "resolution" is +/- .1 degree. They say the "accuracy" is +/- 1 degree. That is a 10 fold difference...which is huge. I called the distributor but did not get much of an answer. My take is they guarantee it to be within 1 degree. Now to the protractor. When it came, I measured both an Incra square and 45 degree angle. Both readings were exact. I also measured a Starrett square...again, the reading was exact. I tried it on some accurate 30 degree and 22.5 degree tools. Same result. My conclusion is you can trust this device to measure angles accurately. It does not compute miter cuts for you...it simply measures angles and you then use a table to set your miter saw. The two vial levels are also quite accurate measured against a Stabila level. I bought this while Amazon was running several promotions that brought the price down close to $20..It includes the battery and a handy case that you can clip or thread onto a belt. In another review, this item was compared to a Bosch unit. The Bosch performs more functions, but costs 5 or 6 times as much. You can count on this piece to give you accurate measurements instantly...measurements you then use to suit your purpose. I think it is an excellent example of what it is designed to do. I deducted one star ONLY because it lacks certain functions that I would use. Based upon what I know, I'd buy it again.

This product just became avail. on Amazon and I decided to order one. I couldn't see spending 3-4X the price for the similar Bosch DWM 40L.
I just rec'd the product and the first thing I did was check it against my Starrett #20 Machinist Square. It read exactly 90.0 degrees despite the published accuracy spec of + or - 1 degree. I looks very well made with a large LCD readout and easy to use on off switch. Unlike the Bosch, this unit comes with a carrying case and belt clip. I'm giving it 5 stars for accuracy, 5 stars for value, and 5 stars for quality. I think the Bosch has a couple extra features like ruler marks on the blade and possibly a hold/recall function. So for features I'd give it 4.5 stars. A blade lock would also be worthwhile. However I'm thrilled with this tool and it should be a companion to every mitre saw. This product should make a sliding T bevel obsolete.

Good but shouldn't be compared to Bosch,

Lets be honest comparing this "protractor" to the Bosch is a little absurd. It is not even close to features and should be compared to a level more than the Bosch unit. Having said all of that and having owned this for several weeks I like the product. I have done some trim work and used it as it is smaller than my Starret unit. It is accurate and that is really what matters with this type of product.

Guage not accurate,

I ordered and returned the Denali Digital Angle Protractor. It did not read accurately across the 180 degree range I tested. It is a nice looking unit and if it were accurate and consistant it would be a great buy. Apparently some of them are accurate, but I did not want to keep sending them back until I got a good one.

Great tool,

I really like this tool. It feels like some of the measuring devices I have used that cost a lot more. Very smooth operation, easy to read, accurate. I have a cheet sheet from a dewalt miter saw web site and it is so easy to use. I dont need the computations for 4x the price. This tool does what it is supposed to do.

What a nice low price for a too that works. Nice, protective case that should be very robust in protecting the instrument. I tried it on a 90-degree machinist's square and it read exactly 90 degrees. I don't know how they could do it, but it would be nice to have a more compact version that could be used on table saw blades to set exact angles.

Just got one and tested it against a number of known angle surfaces and it is within a few tenths of a degree of true. Plenty good enough. Nicely enough made for the money. Nice pouch. Good on/off switch. I do wish it were smaller as I can see its bulk will be a problem off/on. Seven inch on the side, or less, would be nice.
Overall, a very nice product.

Denali 11" Digital Angle Protractor not worth purchase,
By Doug (Federal Way, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Denali 11-Inch Digital Angle Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
Product arrived 7 degrees off zero (when closed, display read "7.2" degrees). Horizontal spirit level was 1/4 bubble off plumb. No way to reset the display, and the battery impossible to remove. I managed to disassemble the protractor and bend the contacts (electrical pick-up in the handle) so it read zero ("0") when closed, however, when checking angles with a real protractors set at standard 90 and 45 degree settings the tool was .2 to .3 degrees over. If you're using this for a hobby or novelty item it might be okay, but if you try to use it for it's intended purpose you will be disappointed. I wouldn't even use it around the house for general woodworking projects, let alone in the construction trade. Giving it a "one star" rating is being generous.

a very good investment,
This review is from: Denali 11-Inch Digital Angle Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have checked and double checked this instrument for accuracy and it is perfect with everything I've checked it with. The switch is located on the end, out of the way but easy to turn on and off. I have used it to adjust the fence on my table saws, as well as on projects. The build in level is also a plus. A very good investment.
The only improvement I think would be a arm lock so as not to move when set aside in the case of multiple measurments. Other wise I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

.
.. ... Like those who have all ready stated the obvious about the quality and accuracy with this digital protractor, we agree. Now remember most will find this tool in a wood workers tool box and with that in mind most are not building any piano's... its accurate enough to build cabinets with however and also set roof angles, what more can be said? Oh yeah how about setting up your miter saw!! The handy pouch is very well made and keeps the lcd display from getting scratched when not in use and clips onto any belt or framing rig! I tends to sit on a truck seat or dashboard. The clip helps me attach it to my dashmat also. The price on these has dropped enough that you can afford 3 or 4 for your shop or crew. The make very nice gifts as well!! |
