Book Description

July 1, 1998
& 50 b/w photos & 20 drawings & 6 x 9 . Detailed descriptions of every major climbing route& Expert tips on planning a Denali expedition & Route and area maps by Dee Molenaar and Mike Clelland "I believe this book is an outstanding project--education is the best source for all of us to make better decisions regarding judgement in mountaineering." --Daryl R. Miller, Mountaineering ranger, Denali National Park R. J. Secor, a veteran mountaineer with more than 25 years' experience, climbed Denali in 1995 and describes in detail 40 routes and 24 variations to its summit, including approaches from the north, south, west, southwest, and southeast. Detailed route maps and precise descriptions as well as special features on outfitting and preparing a Denali trip make this guide book an invaluable resource for the expedition climber or the reader fascinated by this natural wonder. R. J. Secor has climbed not only Denali, but also more than 250 peaks in the High Sierra range as well as Mexico's volcanoes, Aconcagua, the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges. He lives in Pasadena, California. "An expedition to Denali is not a matter of right or wrong; instead, it is a series of decisions, and each decision has many consequences. No one is immune from disaster, but with a realistic assessment of the hazards and an honest appraisal of the skills, strengths, and weaknesses of the party, climbers can significantly reduce the risks by making the correct choices."--from Denali Climbing Guide

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good but only in imperial units, November 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Denali Climbing Guide (Paperback)
This book is definitely very good, with lot of useful information necessary for any expedition to Denali. It gives very good overview of all routes and potential hazards. Problem I have is that all of the numeric information is in imperial units ONLY. I understand that Alaska is part of US (since it is both from Russia in 1867) where the imperial system is predominant (but not official since Dec. 25th 1975 by "Metric Conversion Act"). It is true that most of the English speaking counties are familiar with imperial units, but it is true that English is mostly spread second language on the planet.
Denali is mountain that is climbed by mountaineers from all over the world, and I think that all of them could get better advantage of this book if the SI units are at least specified as secondary units. For now have you calculator ready and do conversion yourself.
1 inch - 2.54 cm; 1000 feet - 304.8m; 1 mile - 1.6 km; 32 degF - 0 degC / 0 degF - -17.7 degC, 1 pound - 0.45kg,...

This review is from: Denali Climbing Guide (Paperback)
An excellent Denali guide if you're thinking about several route choices to research.
A great hiking book for mountaineers in the Southeast is Dixie 3000: A Hiking Guide to the Peaks in South Carolina Over 3000'. Mail Docbeaker@aol.com for more info.
