5.0 out of 5 stars Deng's Bio
This is a fundamental book on the great Deng's life. It is adequate for a college professor and understandable to a 6/7th grader.
It is written in plain simple language the way I like it, no phony vocabulary thrown in to impress people with the writer's great lexicon.

This book is new or very close to it.

The price was doing me a favor.

This review is from: Deng Xiaoping: Leader in a Changing China (Lerner Biography) (Library Binding)
At about 130 pages with large font, this book can be read in one night. I just did that and came away with not too many new things. Alright, it says it is a "Learner Biography", but does that have to mean, "very simple and lacking depth???" Of course, I may not qualify for the average reader, since I spent all of 2005 in Beijing, studying Mandarin and also scouting for the potential to expand my business into China in the form of a subsidiary. I have real China credentials. I have traveled extensively to China since 1994, from Beijing to Shanghai to Hong Kong to Shandong, to Wuxi, to Xi-An to Shenzhen and Dongguan and then some, the list is quite long. I have friends in China, lived with the Chinese, not like an expatriate - and active customer-business connections. So I think it is fair to say I may be one of the better China Experts. If a reader knows nothing of China and would like to get a first glimpse, this might be one way to start it off. (Frankly, any author who claims to have traveled in China and all she learnt is how to master the art of eating with chopsticks!!! - well, no comment... what can one say? anybody can learn that by going to their local Chinese restaurant, armed with an "Eating with Chopsticks for Dummies" Booklet, lol... that is NOT an achievement worthy of mentioning in my opinion). There is no personal account related in the pages of this book, no author's point of view, no analysis of the trends emerging in today's Chinese society: it is a teacher homework assignment to compile from public sources an essay "Write down what you know about Deng Xiao Ping". One can go to Wikipedia and probably read it there all the same, for free.
So, if you know nothing and want to start your knowledge of China from scratch and for just a quick entrance, and if you don't know how to find your way to Wiki, get this book. In all other cases, you would be wasting your money.
