Great value for an all-in-one unit, March 11, 2007
This review is from: Compressor Ice Cream Maker
Received this as a gift (at my request!) over the holidays and have been very happy with it. Unit is easy to use and produces a quart and a half of nicely consistent ice cream in 30 minutes (helps a lot to chill the mix first). Much prefer it over my old unit that required the bowl to be cooled in the freezer overnight for three reasons: doesn't take up the freezer space; doesn't require advance planning; let's you do multiple batches without waiting. One very useful feature is that the mixer operates separately from the compressor, so you can turn of the mixer off when it is no longer able to turn but keep cooling the ice cream in the machine for firmer texture.
As some have noted in reviews on other sites, it is somewhat noisy, but not unbearably so. Other than that, no real complaints; especially considering that this is not a commercial grade unit and only costs $175. I would definitely purchase again.
Some recommendations based on my initial experiences:
1) Cool the mix first and you'll be able to make the ice cream quickly at the end of a meal for an impressive dinner party treat.
2) Ice cream will be on the softer side (but great) when it comes out of the machine, so let it set up for an hour in the freezer if you like it firmer.
3) A little corn syrup (about a tablespoon) will create a smoother consistency for some ice creams.
4) Be careful to fill the bowl only halfway up as the ice cream gains a lot of volume as it freezes.
5) Even if you are not usually a fan of fruit ice creams, try them in this machine. Fresh strawberry ice cream blows away the store-bought stuff.
6) The included directions are pretty clear, so read and follow them!

Delicious ice cream!, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Compressor Ice Cream Maker
This is a wonderful machine!
If you're looking for ice cream in 15 minutes, go to the store. Good ice cream takes time. Time to prepare a good mixture, time to chill the mixture and after making the ice cream, time to harden it. I read several reviews on different ice cream makers before deciding on this one. People who say their mixture didn't freeze in the ice cream maker didn't take the time to properly chill the mixture before putting it in the ice cream maker. And when the machine is done, you will have soft-serve ice cream that needs to harden in the freezer for several hours. Don't expect to make a quick batch for dessert after you're done with dinner.
About the machine itself: The compressor is fairly silent, just a low-noise fan blowing. The top motor with the paddle is a bit more noisy and tends to get a little louder when the ice cream gets thicker. Once you taste the ice cream, you'll forget all about the noise!

Don't buy, not reliable and doesn't hold up for the long run., December 30, 2007
This review is from: Compressor Ice Cream Maker
I purchased this machine on line and was excited when it arrived. I let it sit like the instructions said for 12 hours before using it. The first two batches of ice cream were wonderful, smooth, creamy and delicious and I was happy. No ice cream maker makes ice cream which is really hard so I expected and wanted soft ice cream from this unit. Put it in the freezer if you want it hard.
However, on the third batch, the compressor became very hot, began to smell like something melting or burning and the compressor shut off but the paddle was still turning. I turned off the machine, put the container in the freezer and tried again in about 15 minutes and it then completed it. OK I said, maybe I didn't have it chilled enough, maybe it was just a fluke since the last two batches were just fine. Last night I tried again. I put the mix into the freezer until I saw that it was beginning to freeze. I started up the compressor before I put in the mix for about 10 minutes just to be sure it was cooling and was very cold. Then I put the bucket with the mix into the machine and started the paddles. It ran for about 15 minutes and seemed to be working fine. I could see that it was beginning to set up, but then.....the same thing happened again. The unit became very warm to the touch on top and started to smell like something electrical was beginning to melt or burn and what was frozen began to melt.
I am so frustrated with this. I am returning the product for a refund. As a side note, I had also purchased the refurbished Cuisinart ICE-50 prior to this which also had a compressor problem and had to be returned (at my expense on the postage). Then I decided to try the Deni. I don't think these little compressor models are ready for consumers yet. They are too unreliable and finicky. Go to the store and buy your ice cream, go to Dairy Queen or get the old fashioned ice and rock salt kind like mother used to have.
